| | Stefano Nicola D'Amato (X) ES, PT, FR, IT > EN Translator Native in English Freelancer | Bio: From a very young age language and culture have always fascinated me. I was born and raised in New York City in a very traditional Italian-American family. While English is my first language, I grew up hearing Italian on a regular basis.
My maternal grandmother was t...he daughter of Italian immigrants to Mexico. Her native languages were Italian and Spanish, so I was also exposed to Spanish since birth. Throughout high school I spent summer vacations immersed in the Spanish language and Mexican culture with my grandma’s relatives in Mexico.
In 1990, directly out of high school, I began working at the North American headquarters of Olympic Airways (now Olympic Air) on Fifth Avenue, nestled in between Cartier and Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. As one of the few non-Greek and non-Greek-American employees, I taught myself Greek while working on the job and was able to effectively work and communicate in both English and Greek. I was later promoted to the Group Sales Department where knowledge of Modern Greek was a prerequisite for the position.
In 1994, I began my undergraduate studies at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, where I graduated with a B.A. in Spanish and a minor in Linguistics in June 1997. During this period, I worked full-time for the University of Minnesota – Minnesota Extension Service as Program Coordinator for a statewide continuing education program. In 1994 I also began freelance translation from Spanish into English, as time permitted.
Through a combination of coursework and conversation, I acquired the Portuguese language. I was able to register for a course entitled Portuguese for Spanish Speakers at the University of Minnesota. Upon successful completion of the one-quarter class, I was granted credit for three levels of Portuguese.
I began my career as a high school Spanish teacher in Houston, Texas, upon graduation from the University of Minnesota in 1997. In 2000, I moved back to New York and taught in the New York City school system until 2003. After six years of teaching high school, I decided that I wanted to continue working with language, but in a different capacity.
I spent the next few years exploring the globe while continuing to work as a freelance translator. I can say, with great pride, that I have visited all 50 of the United States, have been to nearly every country on the American continents and have made at least 40 transatlantic journeys. I spent four months in El Salvador and a year in Mexico City where I took graduate-level courses in Applied Linguistics at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). I also earned a diploma for passing the Examen de posesión de la lengua española (Possession of the Spanish Language Examination).
On the other side of the Atlantic, I spent a year and a half in Madrid and ten months in London. More recently, I spent three years in Montreal where I earned a Certificate in Translation Studies (Spanish to English) from McGill University in May 2011.
My travels and other intercultural experiences have helped me improve my language skills as well as hone my cultural awareness. I consider myself fortunate to have had such a variety of life experiences and I have met wonderful people around the globe.
My current goal is to to expand my freelance translation business and make it my full-time career.More Less Message: Hello, hola, olá, salve, salut! |

| | | Bio: Born in a monolingual family, my father realized the value of learning another language and encouraged me to take a French class. That has grown into my own fulltime translation and interpretation business, and in building this business I have had the privilege of meeti...ng and collaborating with some of the most fascinating, intelligent and friendly people imaginable. Being a freelancer has worked very well for our family as well; since my husband has had his own business for over 30 years, we are accustomed to the particularities of working from the home, such as scheduling and payment issues, the tyranny and freedom of having your own business, and so forth. Professional improvement is an ongoing concern for me ; I am awaiting results of several certification exams, and preparing for certification as a medical interpreter, coming up in 2012. I look forward to many more years of work in this most useful, fascinating, and continually-changing industry.More Less |
