En una novela hay un fragmento sobre una carrera de caballos.
"It was a strong field and they got away to a quick start. The Kill was a young son of a nerby farmer, who spent every afternoon that he could sneak away from his work at Gorham's, begging to be taken on as an apprentice. He knew every inch of the terrain and had planned his route to get the most out of both horse and rider."
No es nombre propio y tampoco entiendo porqué está en mayúsculas... no sé si debe ser algo así como el jinete favorito, estrella o algo así. ¿Qué opináis?

: Ahora que se ha facilitado contexto, resulta bastante más evidente. En el texto inicial, era efectivamente una referencia al jinete que hace de presa. :O) :O)

Eso justificaría que se escribiera con mayúscula...ya puesto a aventurar, quizá se apellidara Kilroy.

Tampoco tiene por qué ser el mote del jinete, aunque sí un mote.
Puede que este chico, The Kill, simplemente fuera un espectador de la carrera que hubiera trazado la carrera ideal para que tanto jinete como caballo dieran lo mejor de sí de manera imaginaria.

Pues visto el contexto que se ha agregado, me parece que no cabe duda. La respuesta de Pat es la buena y la Presa es el apelativo que se da al jinete que lleva la bandera.
Desde luego el segundo texto es mucho más ilustrativo que el primero.
Eso justificaría que se escribiera con mayúscula...ya puesto a aventurar, quizá se apellidara Kilroy.

Discussion
on horseback, although there had always been a footrace in spring to
celebrate the new year. The Kill in spring represented new life and it
was considered very good luck for one of the riders to actually catch
the Kill before the finish line and grab the red scarf. If someone could
do that, they became the Kill Reborn.
Although now it was more a sport than a ritual, many still believed
that a rider who grabbed the red flag from the Kill in the Spring Chase
was someone special, someone marked by the gods. But it was very
unlucky for someone to catch the flag in the Autumn Chase. Then it
was said that he or she was marked out for death within the year.
