Mamma mia!: Quebec language cops don’t like the Italian in restaurant menu

Source: The Globe and Mail
Story flagged by: Lucia Leszinsky

The word “pasta” is a little too Italian for Quebec’s language cops.

They’d prefer something more in the language of Moliere than Michaelangelo when it comes to menus, even in Italian restaurants.

“Pasta” wasn’t the only word that left a sour taste when they recently chewed over the menu at Buonanotte, a trendy Italian restaurant in Montreal. There were several other words that didn’t have enough of a French flavour for the Office Quebecois de la language francaise. More >>

An error in French! Feb 22, 2013

You should write:
Office Quebecois de la langue française!
And I am not surprised. They should adopt continental French. When I was in Quebec I spoke English and avoided the Canadian version of French. Apart from that Canada is one of the nicest places on planet Earth.

The real problem! Feb 22, 2013

The Office québécois de la langue française is waisting its time in the wrong place. There is nothing wrong with the word « pasta » on the menu. However, when we go shopping downtown montreal and we cannot be served in French, if we don't speak English, it's like if we were strangers in our own country (province for the moment) that's a real problem!

Whose rights are we talking about? Feb 22, 2013

Unfortunately the whole concept of these "language-police" organisations (which are known in some parts of Spain too) is based upon the idea that languages have more rights than people. In Catalonia for instance, you may not freely decide the language of the signs in your business: they must always be in Catalan, and then they allow you to use the language you prefer.

When people are not free to speak, write, conduct business, and live in whatever language they prefer and the rights of the languages prevail, we are mocking the whole concept of freedom and democracy and are getting closer to dictatorship.
