Spanish term

Caballo Distanciado

Spanish to English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation
From a text on horse racing:

“Caballo Distanciado” es el que, por circunstancias producidas durante la carrera, pierde el lugar obtenido en el orden de llegada a la meta.

Not sure what we call this in English (American).

so how do you explain my refs, which give a clear definition of why even winning horses are called distanced horses and then not allowed to race again in heats?
Note from asker:
Thanks for your suggestion Edward, although when I think of "distanced horse", I think of the definition "Horse so far behind the rest of the field of runners that it is out of and unable to regain a position of contention. A horse beaten more than 40 lengths." http://www.americanhorsepubs.org/career_center/resources/AHP_Style_Guide.pdf
Hello Edward, Here are two other links that back up my definition of distanced. It is not 100% clear what "distanced" means in your second ref. Unfortunately the first link gives me an error. 1. http://www.soak.com/topic/horseracing/article/tshow/76722/distanced 2. http://books.google.com/books?id=CJ4zH2P_6mMC&pg=PA65&lpg=PA65&dq=race+%22+distanced+horse%22+a+horse&source=bl&ots=II_FaIBpZm&sig=U5mOzdL2bWiu20fI0_R_XuQlaQE&hl=en&ei=569mS9PmH4fesAbH8fDKAw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=10&ved=0CCUQ6AEwCQ#v=onepage&q=race%20%22%20distanced%20horse%22%20a%20horse&f=false
