Yes, that I could picture; it was the context of a ship (a tanker i believe) that I couldn't picture. However since this is an emergency manual I believe this deals with saving people from an area that has become dangerous for whatever reason. Thanks to all of you for your help! Once you came up with "pole" it clicked.

Catherine: picture the firefighters when they are called in an emergency fire...
they put on their jackets quickly and slide down a pole to where the fire trucks are....have you seen these on TV?

I have not found this anywhere, but I have seen it. This is what is sounds like....check with your source.
