Spanish term

imponer (el egocentrismo que parecen imponer las respectivas artes)

Spanish to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Hi, I wonder could anyone help me interpret the Spanish in the following sentence. It's the start of a piece on two artists...

Gregorio Prieto and Luis Cernuda. En los dos, que bien marcado el egocentrismo que parecen imponer las respectivas artes.

I'm not sure how to translate imponer in this context, I thought it was just a nice way of saying "command" but a native I was talking to said it was more like "require" although I'm not sure how it fits in this context.
I appreciate any help!
Thanks!

... that seems to be the prerequisite/requirement of their respective arts

I think it's implying that being narcissistic appears to be mandatory - a qualification or requirement...

... A prerequisite (not THE prerequisite!)

Or, simply... that appears to be mandatory for these arts

OR

... THAT APPEAR TO BE CALLED FOR BY THESE ARTS

... that appear to be the order of the day with these arts

Thanks David! I wonder could you help me understand-I'm sure you're right but I don't understand how their art can "require" narcissism or am I totally misinterpreting the text?

dominate

another possible interpretation (backed up by María Moliner) that would fit the context of the sentence.

I hope it helps! Just to give a reference other than M. Moliner: imponer - sinónimos de 'imponer' en un diccionario de 200.000 sinónimos online. ... aventajar, superar, dominar, imperar, prevalecer. 'imponer' también ...

how well marked is the egocentricity the respective arts seem to impose

I don't think "imponer" is a false friend here, it means the same as "impose"
