Spanish term

reforzamiento cogn. esp.

Spanish to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy
The above is a course title from UTESA (Technological University of Santiago, DR). Unfortunately, the school website also contains said abbreviations. Any ideas what it is exactly?
Thanks in advance. :-)

Darius Saczuk (asker) Jun 11, 2009:
ESP. I've already done it. She just confirmed it's "Spanish".
Rosa Paredes Jun 11, 2009:
??? We cannot translate what we don't understand. It is obvious that there is no clarity regarding the meaning of 'esp.'. Ask the client.
Richard McDorman Jun 11, 2009:
That seems to make sense. I was interpreting the phrase as having "cogn. esp." as a unit, but the other interpretation is plausible.
Rob Bird Jun 11, 2009:
yeah, it would seem that "reforzamiento cognitivo" is just their particular way of saying that it's a review class, with the subject of the review listed after. if it weren't abbreviated, i'm guessing it would say "reforzamiento cognitivo de español" and "reforzamiento cognitivo de matemática" (i.e. review).
Darius Saczuk (asker) Jun 11, 2009:
cogn. cogn. = cognitivo
Richard McDorman Jun 11, 2009:
But what is the "cogn." for, then?
Darius Saczuk (asker) Jun 11, 2009:
ESP. Floatingboy has a similar transcript. "ESP." stands for Spanish.
Richard McDorman Jun 11, 2009:
Special vs. Spatial I think that this is ambiguous (at least, on its face, the text is), as "cogn. esp." could be either "cognición especial" or "cognición espacial" ("special cognition" or "spatial cognition"). Both terms exist, but of course they mean very different things (one is parapsychology and the other is "real" psychology). I would like to add, however, that based on the context, "spatial cognition" is more likely, in my opinion.

remedial spanish/spanish review

is this what you're looking at? http://qjvy.com/translations_files/p1-3NoGradesReadable2007-...

if so, it's a report card, and they've abbreviated the name of the course. note that there's a similar course in math. if "reforzamiento/refuerzo" means to strengthen or even repair, the equivalent type of class in English (at least the U.S.) is a remedial class, or a "review". my school calls them "developmental" classes.

cognición especial (="special cognition")

Special cognition of bodies has also been seen in experiments comparing apparent motion of bodies and artifacts. For bodies but not for artifacts, at longer interstimulus intervals, the shortest path of motion is not reported if that would violate the biomechanics of body movement (Chatterjee, Freyd & Shiffrar, 1996; Shiffrar & Freyd, 1993).

What is the Special Cognition Programme?

The study of cognitive phenomena like perception, memory, attention, action, language, and problem solving, including relations to their neural substrates and social setting, is one of the fundamental challenges of modern times. The NWO special Programme on Cognition is meant to boost this highly interdisciplinary area across traditional academic boundaries. The Programme is an initiative of the General Board of NWO and the Research Councils for Earth & Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, Medical & Health Research and the Technology Foundation STW.
