To password protect a web page, it must be located in a password-protected directory. To create a password-protected directory, use the following steps:
1. Change into your pub directory:
cd ~/../pub
2. Create a directory for your password protected web page.
mkdir private
(You can use whatever directory name you like; we have used the name private)
3. Change the AFS permissions on the directory that you created with the commands:
fs sa private/ system:anyuser none system:httpd read
This will give the web server read permissions and remove the world read permissions that your pub directory has by default.
4. Change into the directory you just created.
cd private
5. Create a text file called .htaccess containing the following (you might type pico .htaccess to begin creating the file):

Computer Viruses
In the past few years there have been several computer viruses that have damaged Windows personal computers. While it is technically possible for Macintosh and Unix/Linux computers to be infected, the vast majority of viruses are designed to attack and infect Windows systems.
Fortunately, there are ways to protect computers running Windows. The best protection against viruses is updated anti-virus software. Once installed, anti-virus software will run in the background and protect your computer from a virus. It is very important to keep the anti-virus software updated with the latest virus definitions because new viruses are constantly appearing. At the University of Maryland (UMCP), anti-virus software that is programmed to update automatically can be downloaded for free by all members of UMCP from the Virus Notification Program's software download page (http://www.helpdesk.umd.edu/virus/software.shtml).
Anti-virus software is constantly updated by the vendor. Each update is not a new version but a patch. Patches must be manually installed by the user and are extremely important to help prevent virus attacks.
Even the most up-to-date anti-virus software may not protect your system from a brand new virus because the anti-virus software will not recognize the threat until the latest update is made available. This is where prevention and education comes into play.
In order to protect your computer's operating system, it is essential to run Windows Update regularly.
By itself, anti-virus software cannot protect your computer from brand new viruses. The best way to avoid falling victim to the newest viruses is to keep the operating system patches up to date. On Windows computers, this is easily done by running Windows Update. You can even configure it to run automatically on Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
E-mail is the most prominent means of virus transmission and many people are fooled into opening virus-infected e-mails because they are addressed from someone they know. This is because many viruses send out the e-mail to the addresses they find on the computer they infect; so, if someone you know gets a computer virus on their system, there's a good chance the virus will send an infected e-mail message to you. Some viruses are even designed to send subject lines comprised of actual text from a document on a person's computer.
In most virus-infected e-mails, the virus is an attachment contained in the e-mail. Since there is no foolproof way to tell if the attachment is a virus or not, you should be suspicious of any attachment that you were not expecting. In such cases, the safest course of action is to check with the supposed sender of the e-mail to make sure they really did send you an attachment. If they don't remember sending you an e-mail, then their machine may be infected; and, if you open the attachment, your computer may become infected as well.
Some viruses can exploit security holes within Microsoft e-mail reader programs like Outlook and Outlook Express. If you use Outlook and Outlook Express and receive such a virus, the simple act of reading or previewing the message can activate the virus. Spyware is software that is stealthfully installed on a user's computer and can compromise the privacy of that computer's information. It is as important to have anti-spyware/adware/malware protection as it is to have anti-virus protection for your computer. Peer-to-Peer File-Sharing Programs and Spyware
Peer-to-peer File-Sharing programs and Malware have become very popular in the past few years. Unfortunately, because they are so popular some viruses have been designed to spread via these programs. Once the virus infects the computer, it makes copies of itself in the file sharing folders, using the names of popular MP3 music files, games, or other popular software programs. Shared Folders
Sharing folders and files across the dorm network is a security risk. Certain viruses, if they are present on a computer connected to the network, will look for shared folders they are able to write to and infect them. A recent example of a virus that took advantage of shared folders in this manner was the Klez virus, which infected hundreds of student computers in the 2002 spring semester. This virus spread through the residence halls network quickly in part because of the numerous file and folder shares that were not password protected. If you need to share a folder with someone else over the network, it should be password-protected so that no unauthorized person or program can access those files. This precaution will also make it harder for hackers to gain access to your system through those shared folders.
Securing Shared Folders in Windows XP Professional
1. Simple File Sharing must be disabled. Click Start->Control Panel. Double-click Folder Options. Click the tab View. Scroll to the bottom of the list of advanced settings and uncheck Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended). Click OK.
2. Right-click on the shared folder and click Sharing and Security.
3. Click Permissions.
4. Remove the group Everyone to prevent unauthorized access. Click Everyone to highlight it. Then click Remove.
5. Click Add... to pick which users can access the folder.
6. In the Select Users or Groups window, click Object Types...
7. Uncheck Built-in security principles and Groups. Click OK.
8. Click Advanced...
9. Click Find Now.
10. Click to highlight the user(s) that should be allowed to access the folder. Once the user(s) are selected click OK.
11. Now each user in the permissions list needs to be set with the correct type of access. Click on a user's login and uncheck the Allow box next to Full Control. Then choose whether the user should have Change and Read or just Read access.
12. Click OK once the permissions have been set. Click OK again to exit the folder properties window.
Securing Shared Folders in Windows 2000 Professional
1. Right-click on the shared folder and click Sharing...
2. Click Permissions.

Password Security for Windows 2000/XP
One of the security problems at the university is that many users who have Windows 2000 or Windows XP computers do not create secure passwords for their user account to protect their systems (note: Windows 95, 98, and ME let you set a password, but it can easily be bypassed). If you have simple or blank passwords for the user accounts on your computer, it is very easy for hackers to get into the computer. Once inside, a hacker can take over or destroy your system, or could use it to attack other computer systems while pretending to be you.
A real password should be created for every account. A password should be at least eight characters with a combination of letters and numbers. The longer and more complex a password is, the harder it is for a hacker to guess or to crack using a password-cracking program.
Setting a Password for Windows 2000
1. Press Alt Ctrl Delete.
2. Click Change Password...
3. If the current password is blank leave Old Password: field empty, otherwise type the current password.
4. Type a password of at least eight characters in the New Password: field then confirm.
5. Click OK.
6. Click Cancel to return to the desktop.
7. To change the passwords for other accounts, open the Control Panel and double-click Users and Passwords.
8. Click on the account name then click Set Password...
9. Type a password of at least eight characters in the New Password: field then confirm.
Setting a Password for Windows XP/Vista
1. Open the Control Panel.
2. Click on User Accounts.
3. Click on the desired user.
4. Click the link Change my password.
5. In the first field type the current password. In the second and third field type a new password of at least eight characters in length.
6. Click Change Password.
Enabling the Windows XP Firewall
If you have Windows XP installed on your computer, another step that you can take to secure your computer is to enable the firewall component of Windows XP to protect your network connection. The firewall will prevent outsiders from accessing your system through commonly used network ports while still allowing you to use your regular Internet programs.

Seguridad de contraseñas para Windows 2000/XP

General Summary
The Faculty Activity Reports (FAR) and Outside Professional Activities (OPA) reports are collected annually from UMCP faculty and staff. The reports are due annually around March 15. The OPA section in FAR and the OPA survey for exempt staff were designed to collect necessary information and allow staff to comply with the University's Conflict of Interest/Conflict of Commitment policy.
Faculty and staff in the following categories are expected to complete the OPA form and to submit it to their supervisor or unit head.
* All tenure/tenure track faculty and other full-time faculty
(Some full-time faculty are not required to complete a report. They are faculty whose appointments are defined as visiting, adjunct, and also non-regular, and/or hourly)
* Exempt staff includes administrative and executive staff
Exempt staff, including administrative and executive staff, should complete the Outside Professional Activities report online at the OPA website.
Tenure-track, tenured, and full-time faculty will complete the OPA form as part of their Faculty Activity Reports.
All faculty and exempt staff can access the appropriate OPA form through the following websites.

OPA Login Instructions
If a staff member is going directly to the OPA site via ARES:
1. Go to ares.umd.edu
2. Enter your Directory ID and Directory Password
3. Click on Login
4. Click on Confirm

5. Click on Payroll and Human Resources from the list on the left.
6. Click on Outside Professional Activities Report and the OPA welcome page appears.

8. If you are required to complete FAR, you will be directed to the FAR website.
9. If you are required to complete OPA, the following form will appear.

10. Read the directions carefully and complete the form at the bottom.
11. Read policy.
12. Click the checkbox.
13. Click submit.

Outside Professional Activities Reports
Unit Head/Reviewer Reports
* Unit heads and reviewers are able to see who has completed the report in their unit when they log into the OPA website. There may be a list of units (links) that the unit head or reviewer can view.
* A report of each staff member’s outside activities and whether each has submitted (or not) a report is available to appropriate unit heads and reviewers.
* A signature form for the unit head to complete is also available from a link on each unit head’s intro OPA web page.

All full-time faculty and exempt staff must complete an Annual Report on Outside Professional Activities either using FAR or the OPA website.

What types of activities must be reported?
All paid, outside activities and significant unpaid outside, professional activities should be disclosed.
* Significant: Generally refers to an activity’s importance or relevance in the context of the disclosure and management of potential conflicts of interest and/or commitment. Guidelines for what constitutes a significant activity are to be determined by each unit head, in consultation with the unit’s faculty and/or staff, and with the approval of the Dean or next level administrator. Among the types of factors that might be taken into account by a unit head in determining the significance of an activity are: its duration, the nature and degree of professional skill involved, how closely it relates to an employee’s University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) duties, and/or the type of outside entity involved.
* Outside: Refers to activities performed for individuals or entities other than UMCP. Work performed as part of UMCP assigned job duties for UMCP salary is not considered outside activities and should not be included. Outside entities include: 1) individuals, businesses, non-profit organizations, government agencies and other entities unrelated to the University or the State of Maryland; 2) Maryland State Agencies and other University System of Maryland (USM) Institutions; and 3) USM and UMCP Foundations. (Bold terms are explained further below).
* Professional: Refers to the general professional responsibilities of an employee at UMCP. An outside activity is generally considered professional if it relates in any way, directly or indirectly, to an employee's job duties, professional responsibilities and/or area(s) of expertise.

Should consulting for UMCP be included in the Annual OPA Report?
No, such work does not need to be reported in the Annual Report on Outside Professional Activities. You should, however, be aware that payment (other than normal University salary) for consulting or other professional services rendered to or within UMCP is generally not permitted; exceptions must be approved in advance, in writing, by the unit head and the President or designee. The approval process for such payments will vary depending on the type of work involved.
* For consulting or other services rendered to UMCP or one of its units, other than work on a UMCP sponsored project, approval should be requested, as appropriate, through the salary overload processes administered by Academic Affairs for faculty or Human Resources for staff.
* Payment for work on UMCP-sponsored projects (other than summer salary or faculty buyout payments) that would constitute payment above the UMCP rate of pay must be approved in advance by the President; approval will be granted only in unusual or exceptional circumstances. To request such approval, you should complete the Request for Presidential Waiver for Paid Consulting for a Contract or Grant Administered by UMCP and submit it to your unit head.
* UMCP-Sponsored Project: Includes all University contracts and/or grants (research, consulting, service, or otherwise) administered through the Office of Research Administration and Advancement (ORAA).

What information about an activity should be included in the Report?
The Report should provide information about the activity, the entity for which the activity is performed, and the relation of the employee to the entity. Neither privileged nor confidential commercial information should be included in the Report; nor should specific information about a client nor patient be disclosed if disclosure would constitute a breach of professional ethics. The Report seeks the following information.
* Organization/Individual: You should provide the name of the individual or organization, profit or non-profit (including publishers, federal, state and local government agencies, other University System of Maryland (USM) institutions, and UMCP or USM foundations, etc.) for which an activity is performed.
* Paid Work for Maryland State Agency: You should indicate if an activity involves paid work for an agency or other governmental unit of the State of Maryland, including other USM institutions but not Maryland county or local governments, other states or the federal government. Note: Payment for consulting or other professional service rendered to a State Agency or another USM institution is generally not permitted. Exceptions must be approved in advance, in writing, by the unit head and the President. To obtain such approval, you should complete the Advanced Permission Form for Consulting for Maryland State Agencies and submit it to your unit head. Other USM Institutions are: Bowie State University; Coppin State University; Frostburg State University; Salisbury University; Towson University; University of Baltimore; University of Maryland, Baltimore; University of Maryland, Baltimore County; University of Maryland Eastern Shore; University of Maryland University College; University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science; and University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute.
* Paid Work for UMCP or USM Foundation: You should indicate if an activity involves paid work for the University of Maryland Foundation; University of Maryland, College Park Foundation; Maryland Educational Foundation; M Club Foundation, Robert H Smith School of Business Foundation; University Research Corporation International; and any other foundation affiliated with UMCP or USM and recognized pursuant to Board of Regents policies, BOR IX-2.00 and 2.01
o Note: Advance approval is required for paid work for University affiliated foundations. The approval process is the same as used for salary overload authorization. Advance approval is to be obtained from the Provost for faculty and from the Director of Human Resources for staff. To obtain such approval, you should complete the Advanced Permission Form for Consulting for University Affiliated Foundations and submit it to your unit head.
* Nature of Activity: You should provide a brief description of the activity, including the nature of work performed, positions held, management responsibilities, and/or ownership or other financial interest in, or relationship with, the outside entity.
* Hours Worked: Include the approximate number of hours worked over the entire reporting period. A different method of reporting hours may be specified based upon vice presidential directive.

Who determines what activities should be reported?
If there is a question about whether a particular activity needs to be reported, an employee should either err on the side of disclosure and report it or consult with the unit head. The unit head has the initial authority to determine whether an activity is subject to disclosure in the Annual Report, in accordance with the Policy Conflict of Interest and Commitment and University and unit guidelines.
It should also be noted that the Annual Report is only one of the avenues of disclosure mandated in the University’s Policy on Conflict of Interest and Commitment (II-3.10(A)). In addition to the Annual Report, faculty and staff members are obligated to: keep their unit heads informed in adequate detail and in timely fashion regarding all significant outside professional activities, service on external committees, and other special assignments, whether within or outside of the University; discuss with their unit heads the assumption of significant professional outside activities that are new in scope or kind, including patent arrangements, before entering an agreement to undertake them; and initiate the reporting procedures outlined in University’s Procedures on Conflict of Interest and Conflict of Commitment (II-3.10(B)) whenever they have reason to believe a relationship or situation may involve a real, potential, or apparent conflict of interest.

The existence of a potential conflict of interest is not necessarily a problem, so long as it is promptly disclosed and addressed in accordance with the University’s Procedures on Conflict of Interest and Conflict of Commitment (II-3.10(B))

Resumen general
Los Informes sobre actividad profesoral (FAR, Faculty Activity Reports) y los de Actividades profesionales externas (OPA, Outside Professional Activities) se recogen anualmente de los profesores y empleados de UMCP. Los informes han de entregarse alrededor del 15 de marzo. La sección de OPA dentro de FAR y el cuestionario OPA para empleados exentos fueron diseñados para recoger información necesaria y permitir a los empleados cumplir con la política de la Universidad sobre los conflictos de intereses/conflictos de compromisos.

¿Qué tipos de actividad deben incluirse?
Toda actividad externa por la que se recibe un sueldo y las actividades profesionales significativas sin sueldo deben divulgarse.
* Significativas: Generalmente, se refiere a la importancia o relevancia de la actividad dentro del contexto de la divulgación y la administración de conflictos de intereses y/o compromiso potenciales. Las pautas para la definición de una actividad significativa serán determinadas por cada líder de unidad en consulta con el profesorado y/o empleados de la unidad, y con la aprobación del decano o semejante administrador. * Externas: Se refiere a actividades realizadas para individuos o entidades que no sean UMCP. El trabajo realizado como parte de los deberes asignados por UMCP para recibir el sueldo de ésta no se considera una actividad externa y no debe incluirse. Entidades externas incluyen: 1) los individuos, las empresas, las organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro, las agencias gubernamentales y otras entidades no relacionadas con la Universidad ni con el estado de Maryland; 2) las agencias del estado de Maryland y otras instituciones del Sistema Universitaria de Maryland (USM); 3) las fundaciones de USM y UMCP. (Estos términos se explicarán en más detalle a continuación).
* Profesional: Se refiere a las responsabilidades profesionales generales de un empleado de UMCP. Una actividad externa generalmente se considera profesional si se relaciona de cualquier manera, directa o indirecta, con los deberes, responsabilidades profesionales y/o especialización(es) de un empleado.

¿Debe incluirse en el informe la asesoría a UMCP?
No, no es necesario incluir este tipo de trabajo en el Informe anual de Actividades profesionales externas. Sin embargo, se debe tener presente que la remuneración (que no sea el sueldo normal de la Universidad) recibida por la asesoría u otros servicios profesionales efectuados para o dentro de UMCP generalmente no se permite; las excepciones deben aprobarse por adelantado, por escrito, por el líder de unidad y el Presidente o una persona designada. El proceso de aprobación para este tipo de remuneración variará según el tipo de trabajo.
* Con respecto a la consulta u otros servicios realizadas para UMCP o una de sus unidades, que no sea trabajo para un proyecto patrocinado por UMCP, la aprobación debe solicitarse, cuando sea apropiado, a través de los procesos de sobrecarga de sueldo administrados por Academic Affairs (Asuntos Académicos) en el caso del profesorado, o por Recursos Humanos en el caso de empleados.
* El pago recibido por trabajo en proyectos patrocinados por UMCP (que no sea sueldo de verano o pagos para la terminación temprana de un contrato) que constituirían un salario más grande que el de UMCP debe ser aprobado por adelantado por el Presidente; la aprobación se otorgará solamente en circunstancias excepcionales o poco comunes. Para solicitar esta aprobación, se debe completar la Solicitud de una renuncia presidencial por consulta pagada para un contracto o subsidio administrado por UMCP y luego entregárselo al líder de su unidad.
* Un proyecto patrocinado por UMCP: Incluye todo contracto de la Universidad y/o subsidios (para investigación, consulta, servicio y otros) administrados a través de la Oficina de la Administración y el Fomento de la Investigación (Office of Research Administration and Advancement, o ORAA).

¿Qué información sobre una actividad debe incluirse en un informe?
El informe debe proveer información sobre la actividad, la entidad para la que se efectuó la actividad, y la relación entre el empleado y la entidad. La información privilegiada y confidencial no debe incluirse en el informe; tampoco debe divulgarse información específica sobre un cliente o paciente si dicha divulgación constituiría una violación de la ética profesional. En el informe, se necesita la siguiente información:
* Organización/Individuo: Debe proveerse el nombre de la persona u organización para la cual realizó la actividad (incluso las editoriales, la agencias federales, estatales y locales, otras instituciones del Sistema Universitario de Maryland (USM), y fundaciones de UMCP o USM, etcétera).
* Trabajo remunerado para una agencia del estado de Maryland: Se debe indicar si una actividad consiste en trabajo remunerado para una agencia u otra unidad gubernamental del estado de Maryland, incluso para otras instituciones USM pero no para los gobiernos locales o de condados de Maryland, otros estados o el gobierno federal. Aviso: El pago por la asesoría u otro servicio profesional efectuado para una agencia estatal u otra institución USM generalmente no se permite. ¿Quién decide los tipos de actividades que deben incluirse en el informe?
Si existe una pregunta sobre la necesidad de informar sobre una actividad específica, un empleado debe pecar de prudente en divulgarla o bien consultar con el líder de su unidad. El líder de unidad tiene la autoridad inicial de determinar si una actividad esta sujeta a la divulgación en el Informe Anual, de acuerdo con la Política sobre Conflicto de Intereses y Compromisos y las pautas de la Universidad y la unidad.
También debe de notarse que el Informe Anual es tan sólo una de las maneras de divulgación mandadas por la la Política de Conflictos de Intereses y Compromisos de la Universidad (II-3.10(A)). Además del Informe Anual, los profesores y empleados se ven obligados a: mantenerles informados a los líderes de sus unidades en detalle suficiente y de manera oportuna sobre toda actividad profesional externa y significativa, el servicio en comités externos u otras asignaciones especiales, ya sean dentro o fuera de la Universidad; hablar con el líder de su unidad sobre la asunción de actividades profesionales externas significativas que son nuevas en su alcance o tipo, incluso los arreglos patentes, antes de entrar en un acuerdo de emprenderlas; e iniciar el proceso de divulgación indicado en los Procedimientos sobre los Conflictos de Intereses y los Conflictos de Compromisos de la Universidad (II-3.10(B)) cuando haya motivo de creer que una relación o situación se trata de un conflicto de intereses real, potencial o aparente.

I am a recent graduate from the MA program in Second Language Acquisition (focusing on Spanish) at the University of Maryland, College Park. During my 2 years there, I worked as a Spanish translator for the Office of Information Technology translating their help desk website from English to Spanish.
I learned Spanish while living in Argentina for 2 years during my undergraduate years. Upon my return to the US (and to school), I tested out of all of the lower-level (100 and 200) Spanish courses and also took advanced grammar and a 20th century literature class, landing me just short of a Spanish minor. In my graduate program, I took 2 semesters of Spanish linguistics as well as a semester of history of the language.
I am very detail-oriented and strive to understand the context of the source material in order to provide the most appropriate translation. My strong knowledge of both colloquial speech as well as academic speech and writing gives me great flexibility when it comes to using the correct register (tone or voice) for a document.
