Discussion

Richard Purdom Mar 28, 2018:
as for 'fail', that is right and idiomatic in this context: often used colloquially as 'epic fail' or 'massive fail'

'Failed' is wrong, can't fit it in that sentence at all
Richard Purdom Mar 28, 2018:
yup Nick, or 'and that was that' but your answer is better
Nick Taylor Mar 27, 2018:
@Anitsa FWIW my answer is a synonym of the idiomatic phrase in En ...."and that's that!" :-)
Anitsa (asker) Mar 26, 2018:
Frank, it wasn't intentional, but a mistake.
Gilmar Fernandes Mar 26, 2018:
"bobeou, dançou" = you snooze, you lose

http://linkconcursos.com.br/descubra-o-significado-da-expres...
Voltando a frase “You snooze, you lose” podemos citar como ditados populares no “Foi ao ar, perdeu o lugar”, “bobeou dançou”, “foi à roça, perdeu a carroça”, entre outras.
Frank Miller Mar 26, 2018:
If it was intentional and he knew he was answering the wrong question by giving an erroneous answer, maybe it's something along the lines of "he danced around the question." More context might be helpful here. :)

Fail

e.g.

Zen's question was about 'life', not about "earthly life." Giving evidence that earthly life could only exist in a narrow band is irrelevant to whether the universe is tuned for life in general. So you gave an answer to the wrong question. "Fail."

On top of that, even if you had answered the right question, you'd have been supporting Zen's point that, because so little of the universe is suitable for life, it doesn't appear particularly well tuned to produce life.
Double fail.

agree Gilmar Fernandes : If the context refers to some type of quiz/exam, then this should work (pass/fail).

He's out.

Another suggestion on the line of "he blew it". Both are more in tune with the tone of "dançou" than "fail", which is less informal - but the meaning is basically the same.
In my suggestion, the reference is with the "Three strikes, you're out" from baseball. However, I strongly agree with the colleague that offered "blew it". Depending on the sentence/wider context, I would probably go with that one. I just wanted to leave another suggestion.
