The frequency that carries the information (as modulation of) is called "carrier" - in wired or wireless communications. It is a very old term.

: Of course they are talking about a power line carrier. However, the text definitely describes a device for transforming the carrier, not the carrier itself. ('zum Transformieren von tonfrequenter oder höherfrequenter Wechselspannungen')
