Love me do

Non-PRO English Art/Literary
In the story, at the school there is a opinion circulated. Each page has a name of each student. On the page of a popular student, a comment said " Love me do". I only know that it's the name of a song. I don't understand what it means.

Love me

Just that. The song went "Love, love me do / You know I´ll love you ..."

The song was a massive hit, so everyone knew it. THe Beatles, I think it was their first big hit.

The \"do\" has the function of providing an extra syllable, to fir the musical line, and a rhxme for \"you\". In terms of meaning it reinforces the basic message of \"Love, Love, me\". Those who really want to be intellectual might call it poetic licence, or give some grammatical explanation, but I call it song-writing.
Peer comment(s):

agree Gayle Wallimann : Yes, one of the first Beatles' hits. (the person who wrote the comment probably wants the popular student to love him/her)

Yes, that´s what I said. "love me do" is not normal grammar, though, "do" is there principally for song-writing reasons.
agree Nikita Kobrin : also w/ Marie. I think the "do" here is for both a reinforcement of the imperative and for the song-writing reasons.
