"An Eddy is a spot on the river behind large rocks or other obstacles where the water is actually moving up stream. When the current whips around these objects it creates a current that continually pulls water up stream.

This is useful to paddlers for many reasons. When paddling a long river you may get tired or just need a break. You can eddy out behind a rock and not worry about floating away. Or suppose you are on a new river, you can eddy out and try to scout up coming rapids."
Example sentence:

"Learn how to eddy out in a play boat."
