Dutch to English Other IT (Information Technology) description document
*Configuratie toevoegen aan FST workarea en 'uitgenereren' m.b.v. ........*

That is the sentence; I know 'genereren' but 'uitgenereren'? is that used the same as

Thanks in advance for your help.

Ron, you are right, it is bad English and it really does not exist.
Liane, it is a shame that in the modern culture a good language is not taught anymore in the schools nowadays. The youngsters 'invent' their own language; older people have become 'sloppy'. Anyway, that is what it looks like to me; I love any language that is used properly. As a translator i have to go with the flow of the texts that I translate, because all we are as translators is a medium for two parties to be able to 'understand'/'read' each other.
Thank you both for a very interesting 'conversation' and your help with this 'word' - I will have to go with the 'generate out' because the whole text is an instruction sheet. I would not want something to go wrong because of me!

oorspronkelijk nederlands... ...is veel rijker. Maar wie verstaat nog het onuitgekauwde of het ongezegde? Er is een verschil tussen taal puur als communicatiemiddel en taal als kunst. En er is een heel grijs gebied van levende taal ertussenin.
Ron Willems Aug 7, 2009:
Engels I actually thought "generate out" was as nonexistant in English as "uitgenereren" is (or should be) in Dutch, but as the both of you have a much better active command of English I'll leave that up to you... If it can be said at all, then I think "generate out" is a good translation for this awkward expression (together with the obvious candidate "generate").

I was hoping there would be some more context, so I could guess what they actually meant to say. Perhaps Lianne's interpretation of "een proces helemaal tot het einde laten uitlopen", which sounds plausible too.
Maria Ramon (asker) Aug 7, 2009:
You are right about that..... It always amazed me that the Dutch have to stress things that are so obvious already! Like Ron says: 'uit'printen, 'neer'vallen, 'neer'zitten are really saying the obvious twice.
The reason I ask is because this is an IT document and they do invent a lot of words there and I thought that maybe it should be used 'completely' as 'generate out'.
It is a shame how the Dutch language has been massacred over the years; I remember reading some beautiful Dutch language in books written by original Dutch writers (not the modern ones!) like Olaf de Landell.
Lianne van de Ven Aug 7, 2009:
excellent Super, Ron, and Maria. What do we do with poor language? Gevoelsmatig had ik wel wat met uitgenereren - een proces helemaal tot het einde laten uitlopen, en niet alleen maar iets logisch' of "voortstuwends" genereren. Maar opnieuw: ik weet hier verder niks van.
Ron Willems Aug 7, 2009:
out? Hi Lianne,

I have frankly never heard of either "uitgenereren" or "generate out" and I think both of them are idiomatically wrong.

When I checked "generate out" I found mostly references like "generate out-of-order packets" (my hyphens) or "Generate out of an idl-file" (both of them are in your refs as well), but these are not really instances of a verb "generate out" imo.

There are also some examples where "generate out" is actually used as such, but there they just mean "generate", the "out" doesn't add any meaning.

To my mind, 'uitgenereren' falls into the same category as 'uitprinten': the 'uit' part is a meaningless prefix without meaning, it just stresses that something comes out of something else, which is implicit in generating and printing anyway.
Maria Ramon (asker) Aug 7, 2009:
That is the whole sentence! There is a lot of incorrect Dutch going around in texts nowadays; that is why it is sometimes so confusing to know what people mean? there are a lot of 'invented' words or English words made to sound like Dutch; take this one 'geupdate'; people like us have to figure out what it is.
The sentence I wrote is the whole sentence, it will do no good to invent more to the text than there is. The suggested sentence is not in the text, not even anything remotely resembling it.
I also translated it with 'generate out' but I wondered if it could be said any better, and Lianne apparently thinks the way I do. Thanks, Lianne.
Lianne van de Ven Aug 7, 2009:
You're the expert Hi Ron, no doubt you're the expert. But besides correct Dutch and context, can it in this IT context really be anything else but "generate out?" Otherwise I should not have answered!
Ron Willems Aug 7, 2009:
a bit more context... ... please, such as the previous sentence and the rest of this sentence.

'uitgenereren' is hardly correct Dutch, but given the full context the intended meaning can be deducted.

probably something like "generating XXX out of the configuration that was added to the FST workarea, using ...".

context is needed to determine what XXX would be.
