German term

zu beschreiben

Non-PRO German to English Tech/Engineering Photography/Imaging (& Graphic Arts)
This is for a translation on scanners which describes all the processes and parameters needed to produce the best possible images. I'm having trouble with the word "beschreiben".
The German text is as follows:

Nach der Kalibrierung des Scansystems ist ein definierter Betriebszustand des Gerätes hergestellt worden, der es erlaubt, das Gerät mittels eines ICC Farbprofils *zu beschreiben.*

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (3): Ulrike Kraemer, Coqueiro, philgoddard

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

@ all thanks for your encouragement!
David Hollywood Jul 19, 2014:
"characterize" or maybe "define"
AndersonT (X) Jul 18, 2014:
Characterize... In color management, an ICC profile is a set of data that characterizes a color input or output device, or a color space, according to standards promulgated by the International Color Consortium (ICC). Profiles describe the color attributes of a particular device or viewing requirement by defining a mapping between the device source or target color space and a profile connection space (PCS). This PCS is either CIELAB (L*a*b*) or CIEXYZ. Mappings may be specified using tables, to which interpolation is applied, or through a series of parameters for transformations.

Coqueiro should make it an answer...
Dennis Boyd Jul 18, 2014:
Read and re-read the phrase and then only after thinking hard about the activities of imaging systems and posting did I see the antecedent!

@Coquiero characterize/give designation/identify something along those lines makes sense
Coqueiro Jul 18, 2014:
to characterise perhaps
