Portuguese term

a partida é manual

Portuguese to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks 1970s car
Olá gente!

I am translating a script for a documentary on a woman who goes to work on a Bolivian salt flat. This passage mentions a car which is 'partida manual'. I'd like to check if just means the car is manual, as opposed to automatic, or if it means they have to push it to start it. Here is the text:

"Karina entra no carro do Hugo. Os dois seguem para o salar.
Lá extraem o sal durante um bom tempo. Carregam o caminhãozinho.

Karina entra no carro. É ela quem vai dirigir. ***A partida é manual***. O carro pára a todo instante. Esquenta o radiador. No frio, com o vento na cara, ela é obrigada a colocar água no radiador. A duras penas, eles chegam a Colchani."

It's to US English. Thanks for your help!

Lindsay Spratt (asker) Jul 11, 2013:
The car is from the 1970s, I thought I'd included that, sorry! Thank you all for your help. I spoke to the client and they agreed it refers to hand cranking.
Marlene Curtis Jul 11, 2013:
Yes, good point...
Alex Alexandre Jul 11, 2013:
I agree it must be very old; the question is whether it's old enough to still be *crank started* or not... that's what the "1970s car" topic information at the top makes me wonder...
Marlene Curtis Jul 11, 2013:
Not necessarily, but very, very old.
Alex Alexandre Jul 11, 2013:
does that mean that the car is of Bolivian make too?

or maybe it isn't a 1970s car after all...
Marlene Curtis Jul 11, 2013:
The location is a salt flat in Bolivia. I think it rings a few bells...
Alex Alexandre Jul 11, 2013:
I agree with you Airton especially if it's a 1970s car...
Airton J Souza Jul 11, 2013:
Obs.: Se Karina entra no carro e dá partida manual, então não pode ser Crank started (partida à manivela), pois este dispositivo fica pelo lado de fora - na frente do carro. Será que ela tem um carro tão velho assim, com partida à manivela? Se carro pára a todo instante, ela sai do carro para girar a manivela, no frio, a todo instante? this is the only kind of hand starting of a car I know of
Note from asker:
Thanks Judith, I think 'hand cranked' seems to be the term I need.

the car is hand cranked

Cars these days don't have a hand crank option - the last cars that you had to hand crank to start them were built in the 1950s and 1960s. If you have an old car that needs to be hand cranked then there is knack to it as if you get it wrong the crank handle can break your wrist. You lift the crank handle up and then flick it down and round but without holding on to it.
