"Trainee teacher" gets about 763,000 results on Google so may be more common, although both terms work for me.

If the student is taking a "master" (i.e. a post-grad qualification) then kpdinicola's suggestion may be more appropriate. However, if the course in question is to for a teaching degree to become a "maestro/a" (primary school teacher), then the candidate will be a "trainee teacher".
