German term

Abluftwärmerückgewinnungskühler

German to English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering
It's a part of a dishwasher, directly translated would be: extracted air heat recovery cooler, what is the official term though if there is one?

Discussion

Johannes Gleim Nov 1, 2013:

Yorkshireman Oct 31, 2013:
@Johannes I translated what was meant by the expression. As Kühler = cooler indicates that this is a component, and cooler is incorrect, and as cooling is one of the functions of a heat exchanger, I translated what this component is. No one asked for a translation of Abluftrückgewinning, but I'm sure many will appreciate your perfectly correct translation of the term.
Johannes Gleim Oct 31, 2013:
Wärmetauscher vs. Wärmerückgewinnung as shown with my annex, that "heat exchanger" is a "Wärmetauscher" and "exhaust heat recovery" is "Abluftrückgewinnung". Both devices are similar, but focusses different subjects.

Exhaust air heat exchanger

Dishwashers use heat exchangers to recover heat energy from the exhaust air and the hot water pumped out of the machine.

English from the Winterhalter website:

http://www.winterhalter.biz/winterhalter/products/passthroug...
Each time clean dishes are unloaded, moist, warm water vapour escapes - valuable energy that basically disappears into thin air. The GS 502 Energy / GS 515 Energy transform it into a real plus with the help of an exhaust air heat exchanger. The machines draw the vapour directly out of the interior in advance when the hood is closed and use the vapour's energy to heat the cold supply water.

Example sentence:

The PT-M EnergyPlus pass-through dishwasher is equipped with a large waste water heat exchanger and an additional exhaust air heat exchanger.

agree writeaway : convincing refs in the actual context. for non-techies like me who also have to check Google, Google also confirms, big time.

agree TonyTK : Not convinced. If you google - "exhaust air heat exchanger" "dishwasher" -winterhalter - you get no hits at all. // I know how it works. I just think it might be better with "recovery" in there. // There you go. That sounds a lot better.

Separate exhaust air and heat exchanger. Plenty of sentences to tell you how it works. Hi Tony - I see what you mean. "exhaust air heat exchanger for the (recovery of)(conservation of) otherwise wasted/lost heat energy"
agree James Heppe-Smith : Makes sense to me.

neutral Cilian O'Tuama : Tony has a point. Exclude the word "winterhalter" from your google search and you get 0 hits.

Don't worry:-) I've been translating stuff about heat exchangers in everything from industrial boilers and air conditioning systems to large-scale baking ovens for the past 8 years. The Winterhalter reference was found after I already had the answer.
neutral Johannes Gleim : You translated "Wärmetauscher" instead of "Wärmerückgewinnung" // I agree with this, but the asker asked for an "official term" and heat exchange is no approved translation for "Wärmerückgewinnung"

I know that Wärmerückgewinning is heat recovery or heat energy recovery, if the asker had asked for that, I would probably have offered a translation of that, too. If you re-read the first line of my explanation, it's already there.

Wärmerückgewinnung (WRG) ist ein Sammelbegriff für Verfahren zur Wiedernutzbarmachung der thermischen Energie eines den Prozess verlassenden Massenstromes.
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wärmerückgewinnung

Heat recovery ventilation, also known as HRV, mechanical ventilation heat recovery, or MVHR, is an energy recovery ventilation system using equipment known as a heat recovery ventilator, heat exchanger, air exchanger, or air-to-air heat exchanger which employs a counter-flow heat exchanger (countercurrent heat exchange) between the inbound and outbound air flow.[

Controlled ventilation technology is not only to be reviewed by economical points of view, but nevertheless efficiency through heat recovery from exhaust air is to be expected with mass production in 5-10 years.

Is „Wärmerückgewinnungseinrichtung“ a "Exhaust air heat exchanger"?
32 Ghits for "Exhaust air" "heat exchanger" "Geschirrspülmaschine",
but see and read:

(This ist he original)

12 Cleaning device ( 110 ) According to the preceding claim, wherein the heat recovery device ( 152 ) At least a first fluid heat exchanger ( 176 ), Said first fluid heat exchanger ( 176 Is) arranged to withdraw the moist air a first heat quantity, the heat receiving side ( 202 ) Of the Peltier element ( 194 Is) set up in order to escape the humid air, a second amount of heat.
http://www.google.com/patents/DE102007053381B3
(This is a translation)
You will see, that “Wärmerückgewinnungseinrichtung” (152) is translated by “heat recovery device ( 152 )”, while “fluid heat exchanger ( 176 )” is translated by “Fluidwärmetauscher ( 176 )“

What about

Nach dem Durchlaufen des Wärmetauschers 10 gelangt das durch das Spülwasser erwärmte Frischwasser in eine Abluftwärmerückgewinnung (167) und einen elektrisch oder dampfbeheizten Durchlauferhitzer (166) in das Frischwassernachspülsystem (19) der Nachspülstufe N.

(translation)
You see, that “Abluftwärmerückgewinnung“ is translated by „ exhaust air heat recovery”

Or for a different subject:

18th Passive House according to one of the preceding claims, characterized by the following alternative or cumulative features:
• - Fully insulated windows (16)
• - An isolated strip foundation with a walled-up base,
• - A small cellar,
• - An insulated crawl space, consisting of a strip foundation with aufgemauertem base,
• - An exhaust heat recovery system,
• - A rainwater harvesting system,
• - Alternative energy such as solar or wind energy,
• - An exhaust air heat recovery,

(again translated)
You see again, that “Abluftwärmerückgewinnungsanalge” is similarly translated by” exhaust air heat recovery system”
