Heritage Minister James Moore touted a renewed $1.1 billion plan to protect bilingualism in Canada Thursday as a central plank in the country’s political health and stability.

“In a country as vast and as diversified as Canada, our official languages play indeed an essential role in making sure that this country stays united,” Moore said at a high school near Parliament Hill where he unveiled highlights of the five-year roadmap.

The plan would focus on education, immigration and the health of minority English and French-speaking communities in response to consultations across the country. Moore said this would benefit Canada while helping provide a competitive advantage to businesses.

Although the Harper government has at times faced criticism in recent years for neglecting Canada’s language legislation — which requires protection, survival and access to services for communities from both language groups — Moore said the renewed roadmap confirms that his Conservative party supports bilingualism. Read more.

Already, pandering to the two-language formula is pushing the country to division into two with Quebec wanting a separate country status. A multi-lingual policy would do much to counter this fissiparous tendency. But politicians never think long-range, as they are blinkered by the next elections five years on.Collapse

Our experience in Spain Apr 3, 2013

Our experience in Spain is that when governments begin to invest in multilinguism, or in a regional language for that matter, they give languages more rights than the people who speak them (or don't speak them), and the end result is an alienated society, one where neighbours despise each other for reasons of origin or language spoken.

Public money should be invested in teaching one common language to keep the people's long-term ability to effectively communicate, work, and study wherever they like in the whole of the country. People interested in their own regional culture and language should invest their own time and money to preserve it.
