Source text - Russian Во время празднования Рождества Христова, я поделился с детьми и внуками о том, что хотел бы до весны посетить Читинскую тюрьму и лагеря, в которых меня пытались умертвить советские репрессивные органы в период с 1981 по 1986г.г. А на обратном пути, заехать в последний лагерь в Чусовском районе Пермской области. Дети и внуки с большим интересом отнеслись к моему желанию и довольно часто напоминали мне о предстоящей поездке. Сын Павел также выразил своё желание сопровождать меня по этим мрачным местам, которыми вёл меня Господь.
Итак, вооружившись фотоаппаратом и видеокамерой, а также продуктами питания на четверо суток, отправился на Ярославский железнодорожный вокзал города Москвы. Сын Павел, должен был прилететь в Читу на самолёте на шесть дней после моего отъезда.
Устроившись в комфортабельном вагоне и познакомившись с соседями по купе, я стал читать Библию, а затем начался диалог с моими соседями о Боге и вечной жизни. Среди попутчиков были люди разных профессий. Одна женщина, ехавшая во Владивосток, была сотрудницей государственной безопасности. С ней и прибыл я до конечного пункта – Читы. Она больше всех слушала о Боге, Иисусе Христе- Спасителе и вечной жизни. Когда общаешься с людьми и беседуешь с ними о благой вести, то испытываешь какое-то приятное чувство оттого, что являешься сеятелем добрых семян любви, мира и счастья. Может быть, когда-нибудь прорастут эти семена и принесут добрые плоды. Когда я путешествую, всегда беру в дорогу духовную литературу и с радостью раздаю всем желающим. Хотя и воспитывали наш народ долгое время в безбожии, но всё же тяга к святому и возвышенному осталось в людях, и они принимали с благодарностью Евангелия, брошюры и буклеты духовного содержания, при этом обещали читать их.
Мимо окон вагона мелькали заснеженные поля, леса, сёла и города, а в душе всплывали воспоминания о прошлых этапах в вагонах для заключённых, как правило, всегда переполненных до предела. Смотрел на своё купе и думал о тех днях, когда в обычное купе рассчитанное на четырёх или шесть человек, солдаты заталкивали до двадцати двух человек, и когда не возможно было больше втолкнуть остальных, тогда солдаты брали человека за руки и ноги и забрасывали прямо на головы находящихся в купе заключённых. В дрогу давали селёдку или кильку, хлеб и немного сахара. Очень большая проблема была с водой. После еды солёной рыбы, очень сильно, мучила жажда и положенную норму воды, заключённые выпивали очень быстро, а дополнительной водой, умышленно или из-за дефицита, солдаты не снабжали.
Всплывали картины тех дней этапа, и мучительно больно было вспоминать нецензурную речь, в которой было больше скверных слов, нежели нормальных. А сколько дыма от сигарет клубилось в таком купе, до невозможности переполненном купу заключёнными. Как трудно было в таких условиях начать свидетельствовать о Боге, нормальной жизни и вечной жизни, однако находились отдельные заключённые, которые с великой жаждой слушали Слово Божье и задавали разные вопросы, которые тревожили их грешные души.
Первой на пути следования предстала в моей памяти Пермская пересыльная тюрьма, в которой мне пришлось побывать дважды. В ней были очень строгие порядки. С подъёма и до отбоя нельзя было не только полежать на кровати, но нельзя было даже поседеть на ней. На вопрос, почему нельзя? Был ответ надзирателя один: «что в карцер захотел?». В результате у заключённых отпадало желание задавать подобные вопросы вообще.
Второй пересыльной тюрьмой была Свердловская, в которой я был четыре раза. Это самая ужасная тюрьма из всех, в которых мне пришлось побывать. Постелей там не выдавали, камеры переполнены настолько, что войти в камеру было невозможно, и солдаты просто ногами заталкивали осуждённого в камеру, и если не успел убрать ноги с порога двери, то была опасность быть травмированным тяжёлой металлической дверью, которую с яростью и злобой закрывали солдаты. Это была самая грязная и самая насыщенная клопами тюрьма. Но и в таких условиях приходилось свидетельствовать о Боге. Дальше были пересыльные тюрьмы такие как Новосибирская, Красноярская, Иркутская и наконец Читинская. Для каждой из этих тюрем, есть свои характерные особенности и в каждой из них были свои трудности, но были и свои радости, связанные со свидетельством Божественных истин и не только заключённым, но и надзирателям и начальникам.
Translation - English During the Christmas holiday season, I shared with my children and grandchildren about how before spring I would like to visit the prison in Chita and those camps where the repressive Soviet regime sought to put me to death from 1981 to 1986. Then, on the way back I wanted to stop at the final camp in the Chusovskii Region of Perm Oblast. My children and grandchildren showed a lot of interest in this desire of mine, and reminded me fairly frequently of the upcoming trip. My son Pavel also expressed his desire to accompany me to these forlorn places where the Lord had led me.
Thus it was, armed with a camera and video recorder - plus some provisions for four days - I set off for Yaroslav train station in Moscow. My son Pavel was supposed to arrive in Chita by plane 6 days after my departure.
Having situated myself in a comfortable car and after making the acquaintance of my cabin mates, I started reading my Bible; later, a conversation got going with my neighbors about God and eternal life. Among my traveling companions were people of various professions. One woman on her way to Vladivostok was a State Security agent. I was with her all the way to my final destination in Chita. She listened more than any of the others about God, the Savior Jesus Christ and eternal life. Whenever you talk to people and tell them about the gospel, you experience a pleasant sensation from being the sower of the good seed of love, peace and happiness. Perhaps some day the seeds will grow up to produce good fruit. When I travel, I always take Christian literature with me and give it out to all who desire. Even though our people were brought up in atheism for a long time, the draw remains in people toward the holy and the ethereal, and they gratefully took New Testaments, tracts and Christian booklets, promising to read them as they did so.
Snow-covered fields, forests and villages flashed past the window of the car, but in my heart memories welled up of past voyages in prison cars that were, as a rule, always filled to the brim. I looked at the compartment I was in and thought of those days when the soldiers would shove up to 22 men into a compartment normally designed for four to 6. And then when it wasn’t possible to fit any more in, the soldiers would take men by their hands and feet and throw them over the heads of the prisoners already in the compartment. They gave us sardines or herring, bread, and a little sugar. There was a very large problem with water. After eating salted fish the thirst was tortuous, and the prisoners drank up their water ration very quickly. Whether it was premeditated or from a deficit of water, the soldiers did not provide any additional water.
Images welled up of those days of prison transfers, and it was tortuous to recall that uncensored speech, where there were more curse words than clean ones. And so much smoke from the cigarettes of the prisoners filled the compartment that it was unbearable. It was so hard in those conditions to begin to testify about God, a normal life, and eternal life. Nonetheless, one could find individual inmates who listened with great hunger to the Word of God and asked various questions that troubled their sinful souls.
The first stop that lay ahead on my journey was Perm intensive prison, where I had been two times. There were very strict rules there. From wake-up to lights-out, we were not only not allowed to lie down on our bunks: we couldn’t even sit on them. And if we asked, “Why not?,” the answer we would get from the guards was, “What? Are you asking to be put in isolation?” As a result, inmates lost the desire to ask any more questions like that.
The second intensive prison I visited was the one in Sverdlovsk, where I was detained four times. This was the most terrible of all the prisons where I had to be. They didn’t give us matresses there. The cells were so packed that it wasn’t possible to walk into them, so the soldiers just pressed the convicts in with their feet. And if the inmate didn’t manage to get his feet in behind him over the threshold, he risked having them crushed by the heavy metal door that the soldiers would slam shut with malicious contempt. This prison was the filthiest, the most infested with bed bugs. But even in these conditions the testimony of God had to go out. Further on were intensive prisons in Novosibiirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk and, finally, Chita. Each of these prisons has its own characteristic trademarks, and each of them had its own difficulties. But they also had their own joys connected with testifying divine truths – not only to inmates, but also to the guards and administrators.

Mr. Lovelace has completed training in translation at the graduate and undergraduate level.
Graduate Studies
In 2007, Mr. Lovelace completed his Master of Divinity, a 96-credit graduate degree, with an emphasis in translation. He earned a Master of Theology in 2013 (formally equal to half of a Ph.D.) from the same institution, Calvary Baptist Theological Seminary.
Undergraduate Studies
Mr. Lovelace is a 1996 graduate of Wabash University, where he earned a double major in Russian and Spanish, and was inducted one year early into the ΦΣΙ Honorary Society for outstanding achievement in language studies. As part of this degree, he completed studies in Russian at Kuban State University in Southern Russia and Spanish studies in Madrid at the Universidad Complutense. Following his undergraduate studies, Mr. Lovelace worked for seven years as an interpreter and translator with Baptist International Evangelistic Ministries, a humanitarian and educational ministry based partially in Ukraine and Russia.
RECOMMENDATION FROM A PREVIOUS CLIENTAs president of Baptist International Evangelistic Ministries (BIEM) I am glad to recommend Chris Lovelace who preformed outstanding services for our organization as our Russian Language and Cultural specialist. His duties with BIEM included daily translation of financial reports, correspondence, international shipping documentation, legal documents and other items from English to Russian and from Russian to English.
While employed with BIEM, Chris also interpreted for conferences and escorted Russian-speaking ministers across the United States for over 100 speaking engagements. Furthermore Mr. Lovelace interpreted in business meetings, court hearings, and even during visits with host-families for some guests of BIEM.
During his full-time employment as a translator with BIEM, Chris at our request published A Path Not Lined With Roses, a first-person narrative of religious persecution in the Soviet Union. Mr. Lovelace was also contracted by another agency during this time to translate Moscow Express, the final book written by the renowned Georgi Vins before his death.
In addition to Mr. Lovelace's excellent professional abilities he is truly a man of impeccable character, hard work ethic, a consummate "team player", and is absolutely gifted in people skills. I have often witnessed his unusual ability to sense potential conflicts between personalities which can be difficult and then creatively develop a strategy to avoid a conflict or resolve an existing one without offending anyone. It was a great loss for us when Chris left our organization to pursue further studies. We have always hoped that when he completes his pursuit of advanced degrees, we would be so fortunate as to have him work for us again.
