Source text - French Selon une jolie légende, Vénus, sortant des eaux, fit tomber sept pierres précieuses de son diadème dans la mer, donnant ainsi naissance aux sept îles de l'archipel toscan. L'île d'Elbe (224 km2) est la plus importante et la plus connue. Soleil, eaux limpides et sable chaud, avec en toile de fond des petits bourgs perchés sur la crête des montagnes et collines, attirent plus d'un million de visiteurs chaque été. Les îles du Giglio, de Capraia, Montecristo, Pianosa, Giannutri et Gorgona ont toutes aussi pour décor un relief montagneux et une nature encore intacte, qui doit sa richesse à la diversité de leurs côtes et de leurs fonds sous-marins. Alors que les terres sont dominées par la garrigue, la mer, bien connue des amateurs de plongée, est riche en cétacés.
L'île d'Elbe faisait partie, à l'ère primaire, d'un continent disparu, la Tyrrhénide, qui s'engloutit à l'ère quaternaire, laissant comme témoins les îles de Corse, de Sardaigne, des Baléares, d'Elbe, et les massifs des Maures et de l'Esterel.
Montagneuse, Elbe culmine au mont Capanne (1018m), qui domine tout un massif granitique creusé de carrières. Les rivages, très découpés, dessinent des criques naturelles, bien abritées, dont le fond est occupé par de petits plages. La pêche sous-marine se pratique le long des abrupts rocheux de la côte ouest, percée de grottes marines. Les pêcheurs de métier capturent thons et anchois.
La végétation, de type méditerranéen, se compose de palmiers, eucalyptus, cèdres, bambous, magnolias, mais surtout d'oliviers, de maïs et de vignes : deux cépages donnent des vins parfumés et puissants, le moscato blanc et l'aléatico rouge rubis, aux senteurs de sous-bois, de rose et de griotte.
L'île est particulièrement belle en juin, lors de la floraison des gênets.

Underwater fishing is practised along the steep, rocky slopes of the West Coast, riddled with marine caves. Professional fishermen catch tuna and anchovies.
The typically Mediterranean vegetation includes palm trees, eucalyptus, cedars, bamboo, magnolias, but above all olive trees, maize and vines: two different types of vine produce fragrant and potent wines, the white moscato and the ruby red aléatico, with their bouquets of undergrowth, rose and Morello cherry.
The island is particularly beautiful in June during the broom blossom.

Source text - French Mme du Châtelet bénéficia d'un environnement exceptionnel et d'une éducation tout à fait atypique pour l'époque. Ses parents avaient un vrai respect pour les choses de l'esprit et faisaient vivre leurs enfants dans une atmosphère qu'on qualifierait aujourd'hui d'intellectuelle. La Marquise de Créqui s'étonnait de l'avidité de savoir qui était le propre des parents. Ils avaient même sacrifié trois pièces de la maison à l'établissement d'une bibliothèque bien remplie. Très jeunes, les enfants eurent le droit d'y prendre des livres avec une liberté fort rare en ce temps-là.

Translation - English At that moment a rickshaw comes along the road, alongside the pavement where the young lady is walking away with short, quick steps. It is going in the same direction as her, pulled along at a brisk pace by a Chinese man dressed in mechanic's overalls but wearing the traditional bell-shaped conical hat. Between the two high wheels with their wooden spokes painted bright red, the black canvas hood extending out over the only seat completely conceals the passenger sitting there. Unless the seat itself, which remains invisible from behind because of the hood, is empty, occupied only by an old flattened cushion, the cracked imitation leather of which, worn in places to the canvas, lets its stuffing escape through a tear in one of its corners. This would explain the astonishing speed at which this puny little man can run, the blackened soles of his bare feet appearing mechanically one after the other between the red shafts, without ever slowing down to catch his breath, so that he is immediately lost to view in the dark shadows of the giant fig trees at the end of the avenue.

Working with words has always been a pleasure for me. I adore the challenge of finding the right words or phrases to produce a translation which is both natural and faithful to the original text. That's why I only translate from French to my native language, English.
My speciality fields are poetry and literature, education and pedagogy, music and musicology, travel and tourism. I also work in the fields of museology, culture and fine arts, photography and imaging, and websites.
I have a Master's Degree in Historical Musicology and an Undergraduate Honours degree in Music (for both degrees I translated literary and poetical texts specializing in early opera). My passions are photography and computer graphics (for which I have also followed professional training courses).
