Source text - English Historic buildings present a range of challenges when carrying out improved energy efficiency. These include establishing an appropriate energy performance target, achieving approvals from the planning authority, designing bespoke so- lutions for internal insulation or airtightness, ensuring high levels of workmanship on site and ensuring that the long-term hygrothermal per- formance of the building fabric is not adversely affected by the thermal upgrade.
This paper reports on the design approach taken to insulation and airtightness for a 170 year old, listed, townhouse in London. Working within the constraints of the conservation requirements and existing building fabric nine different in- sulation materials were used in the project —
- each a bespoke solution to localised performance requirements. Prior to the application of inter- nal insulation, remote sensors were installed into the walls of the building with the aim of monitoring the hygrothermal performance at each location.
Construction commenced in February 2013, the building sensors were installed in June 2013 and the client moved into the house in November 2013.
The existing building
The four-storey semi-detached house has a total floor area (TFA) of 170 sqm and has a rela- tively low heat loss form factor (external surface area/TFA) of 2.22 due to the shared party wall. The external walls are built of London stock bricks with varying wall thickness: 495mm (two bricks) on the lower ground floor, 330mm (1.5 bricks) on the ground and first floors and 225mm (one brick) on the 2nd floor. The external walls face west (front), north (side) and east, (garden), with the party wall to the south.
The grade II listing and conservation area status of the house precluded the application of external insulation and replacement of the existing sin- gle-glazed, vertical sliding sash windows. The internal historic features include plaster cornices and decorative timberwork (shutter boxes, picture rails, timber skirtings, etc.).

La edificación existente
La casa pareada de cuatro plantas tiene una superficie total construida (STC) de 170 m² y tiene un factor de forma de pérdida de calor relativamente bajo (superficie externa de la envolvente/STC) de 2,22 debido a la pared medianera. Las paredes exteriores están construidas de ladrillo rústico inglés con espesores variables: 495 mm (dos ladrillos) en la planta sótano, 330 mm (1,5 ladrillos) en las platas baja y primera, y 225 mm (un ladrillo) en la segunda planta. Las paredes exteriores miran al oeste (frente), al norte (costado) y al este (jardín); y la pared medianera, hacia el sur.
La catalogación de grado II y el estatus de área de protección de la casa impiden que se aplique aislamiento exterior y que se reemplacen las ventanas de guillotina con acristalamiento simple. Los rasgos históricos interiores incluyen cornisas de yeso y trabajos decorativos en madera (cajas de persiana, molduras para cuadros, zócalos, etc.)

This leaflet explains what sedation is, how it works and when you may need it. It also explains the benefits and risks of using sedation and what it might feel like.
Importantly, it tells you what you will need to plan for your care after sedation.
It has been written by patients, patient representatives and anaesthetists, working together.
Sedation is usually given into your vein (IV or intravenous), but can sometimes be given by mouth (oral) or through a face mask.
What is intravenous sedation?
Intravenous sedation is when a sedative (sedation medicine) is injected into your bloodstream (vein) through a drip (tube) to relax you.
‘Sedationist’ is the name given to the healthcare professional who does this.
They are trained in giving the right amount of sedative and managing any side effects. In the operating theatre, the sedationist is usually an anaesthetist. In other settings, this may be a nurse, surgeon or other trained practitioner. Your sedationist will stay with you all the time during your treatment.
There are three different levels of intravenous sedation. They are called ‘minimal’, ‘moderate’ (sometimes also called conscious sedation) and ‘deep’ sedation.
■ Minimal sedation – the sedationist will give you a small amount of sedative. You will feel relaxed and less worried by what is happening around you, but you will be awake and able to talk normally. You are likely to remember having your treatment, but not all the detail. Minimal sedation should not affect your breathing.

HAROLD WARING noticed Them first walking up the path from the lake. He was sitting outside the hotel on the terrace. The day was fine, the lake was blue, and the sun shone. Harold was smoking a pipe and feeling that the world was a pretty good place.
His political career was shaping well. An under-secretaryship at the age of thirty was something to be justly proud of. It had been reported that the Prime Minister had said to someone that "young Waring would go far". Harold was, not unnaturally, elated. Life presented itself to him in rosy colours. He was young, sufficiently good-looking, in first-class condition, and quite unencumbered with romantic ties.
He had decided to take a holiday in Herzoslovakia so as to get right off the beaten track and have a real rest from everyone and everything. The hotel at Lake Stempka, though small, was comfortable and not overcrowded. The few people there were mostly foreigners. So far the only other English people were an elderly woman, Mrs. Rice, and her married daughter, Mrs. Clayton. Harold liked them both. Elsie Clayton was pretty in a rather old-fashioned style. She made up very little, if at all, and was gentle and rather shy. Mrs. Rice was what is called a woman of character. She was tall, with a deep voice and a masterful manner, but she had a sense of humour and was good company. Her life was clearly bound up in that of her daughter.
Harold had spent some pleasant hours in the company of mother and daughter, but they did not attempt to monopolise him and relations remained friendly and unexacting between them.
The other people in the hotel had not aroused Harold's notice. Usually they were hikers, or members of a motorcoach tour. They stayed a night or two and then went on. He had hardly noticed any one else — until this afternoon.
They came up the path from the lake very slowly and it just happened that at the moment when Harold's attention was attracted to them, a cloud came over the sun. He shivered a little.
Then he stared. Surely there was something odd about these two women? They had long, curved noses, like birds, and their faces, which were curiously alike, were quite immobile. Over their shoulders they wore loose cloaks that flapped in the wind like the wings of two big birds.
Harold thought to himself.
"They are like birds —" And he added almost without volition, "birds of ill omen."
The women came straight up on the terrace and passed close by him. They were not young — perhaps nearer fifty than forty, and the resemblance between them was so close that they were obviously sisters. Their expression was forbidding. As they passed Harold the eyes of both of them rested on him for a minute. It was a curious, appraising glance—almost inhuman.
Harold's impression of evil grew stronger. He noticed the hand of one of the two sisters, a long claw-like hand.... Although the sun had come out, he shivered once again. Rethought:
"Horrible creatures. Like birds of prey…"
He was distracted from these imaginings by the emergence of Mrs. Rice from the hotel. He jumped up and drew forward a chair. With a word of thanks she sat down and, as usual, began to knit vigorously. Harold asked:
"Did you see those two women who just went into the hotel?"
"With cloaks on? Yes, I passed them."

Harold había pasado unas horas agradables en la compañía de madre e hija, pero ellas no intentaron monopolizarlo por lo que las relaciones permanecieron en tono amistoso entre ellos.

Las mujeres subieron directamente a la terraza y pasaron muy cerca de él. No eran jóvenes, quizá estaban más cerca de los cincuenta que de los cuarenta, y el parecido entre las dos era tan grande que era obvio que eran hermanas. Su expresión era severa. Mientras pasaban cerca de Harold la mirada de ambas se detuvo en él por un momento. Era una mirada curiosa, apreciativa, casi inhumana.
La impresión de Harold de que eran malvadas se hizo más fuerte. Notó la mano de una de las dos hermanas, era larga y similar a una garra…
Aunque el sol había salido, Harold tuvo otro escalofrío. «Qué horribles criaturas. Parecen aves de presa…», pensó.
La aparición de la señora Rice, que salía del hotel, lo distrajo de estos pensamientos. Se puso de pie de un salto y le acercó la silla. Agradeciéndole la señora Rice se sentó y, como de costumbre, comenzó a tejer vigorosamente.
—¿Vio a esas dos mujeres que entraron al hotel? –preguntó Harold.
—¿Las que llevaban capas? Sí, las crucé.
