अंग्रेजी के महान रचनाकार चा‌र्ल्स डिकेंस का जीवन ही उनकी रचनाओं का मूल प्रेरणस्त्रोत रहा। किसी फिल्म की कहानी की तरह काफी संघर्ष भरा था उनका जीवन। आठ भाई-बहनों में से दूसरे नंबर के चा‌र्ल्स के पिता नेवी में क्लर्क थे। उनका बचपन गरीबी में गुजरा। स्कूल फीस न दे पाने के कारण उन्हे स्कूल छोड़ना पड़ा। किशोरावस्था में सड़कों, गलियों में जीवन बीता। उन्होंने बूट पॉलिश बनाने वाली फैक्ट्री में मजदूरी की। मां का भी प्यार नहीं मिला।
7 फरवरी, 1812 को इंग्लैंड के शहर लैंडपोर्ट के पो‌र्ट्समाउथ इलाके में जन्मे चा‌र्ल्स की रचनाएं अंग्रेजी साहित्य की अमूल्य धरोहर हैं। वे विक्टोरियन युग के सबसे लोकप्रिय अंग्रेजी उपन्यासकार थे। न केवल उपन्यासकार, बल्कि वे एक महान चिंतक भी थे। उन्होंने अपनी रचनाओं में सामाजिक कुरीतियों के खिलाफ जमकर आवाज उठाई। 9 जून, 1870 को मात्र 58 साल की उम्र में उनका निधन हुआ।
उनकी रचनाओं पर 300 से ज्यादा मूवी, कार्टून और ड्रामा बन चुके हैं। 'द एडवेंचर्स-ऑलिवर ट्विस्ट', 'निकोलस निकिलबी', 'ओल्ड क्यूरिऑसिटी शॉप', 'बार्नबी रज', 'डेविड कॉपरफ़ील्ड', 'ग्रेट ऐक्सपेक्टेशस', 'टेल ऑफ टू सिटीज' आदि विश्वविख्यात उपन्यास हैं। चा‌र्ल्स डिकेंस ने क्रिसमस को सबका त्योहार बनाया। वर्ष 1843 तक क्रिसमस चद लोगों तक सीमित था, पर उनकी रचना 'क्रिसमस डिनर' और 'ए क्रिसमस कैरोल' के आने के बाद क्रिसमस पार्टी और ग्रीटिंग का‌र्ड्स देने का चलन शुरू हो गया।

Charles Dickens was author of such famous works like Oliver Twist, A Tale of 2 Cities. 7 February was the 200th anniversary of creator of these works.
Life was inspiration for many of Dickens great literary creations. His life was like a story of a movie filled with many struggles. His father was navy clerk, with 8 children of which Dickens was the second. He spent his childhood in poverty. Since his parents couldn’t afford to pay school fees, he had to stop his education. He spent his teens on streets, working in a boot polish manufacturing factory. He dint even receive much love or emotional support from his mother.
The works of Dickens born on February 7, 1812 in Landport at Portsmouth (England) are an invaluable asset of English literature. He was the most popular novelist of the Victorian age. He was not a novelist but also philosopher. He railed against social prejudices through his compositions. He died at age of just 58 on 9 June 1870.
His works have been recreated into more than 300 movies, cartoons and dramas. He has written many great novels such as The Adventures of Oliver Twist, Nicolas Nickelby, Old Curiosity Shop, Barnaby Rudge, David Copperfield, Great Expectations, A Tale of 2 Cities and more. Charles Dickens made a holiday for the masses. Until then Christmas was not widely celebrated, however with works like Christmas Dinner and Christmas Carol, the tradition of giving Christmas parties and cards became a more popular trend.

माझा दिवस हा सर्वसामान्य महिलांप्रमाणेच सकाळी घरातली कामं आवरण्यापासून सुरू होतो. सगळं वेळेत उरकण्यासाठी माझीही सकाळी घाई-गडबड सुरूच असते. आता या सगळ्याची सवय लागून गेली आहे. मी पण इतरांसारखीच घड्याळ्याच्या काट्यावर धावत असते. फरक एवढाच की माझ्या कामाचं स्वरुप पूर्णत: वेगळं असल्याने तिथे वेळ चुकवून चालत नाही. कधी कधी या घाई-गडबडीचा मलाही कंटाळा येतो पण ते तर आपलं कर्तव्यच आहे आणि ते कुणाला चुकलंय? तुम्ही कोणत्याही क्षेत्रात, कितीही उच्च पदावर असलात तरी दिवसभराच्या वेळापत्रकात घरातली कामं उरकणं, हवं- नको बघणं हे आलंच. आमच्या क्षेत्रात वेळेला प्रचंड महत्त्व आहे. तिथे अत्यंत शिस्त, काटेकोरपणा अंगी बाणवावा लागतो. उशीर वगैरे चालतच नाही. गाडी सुरू करण्याआधी इंजिन तयार करावं लागतं. गाडी वेळेत सोडायची म्हणजे आपण त्या वेळेआधी तयार असावं लागतं. तुम्हाला घरी काय त्रास आहे किंवा तुम्ही घरून काय कामं करून आलात हे इंजिनला, ट्रेनला किंवा सिग्नलला सांगून चालत नाही. सिग्नलला आपला रंगही माहिती नसतो, तो आम्ही बघायचा असतो. आमच्या क्षेत्रात डोळ्यात तेल घालून कामावर पूर्ण लक्ष केंदीत करावं लागतं. टेबलवर्क करताना कामात एखादी चूक झाली, तर तुम्ही ती सुधारायला वाव असतो, वेळ पडल्यास संपूर्ण फाइल बदलता येते. पण आमचं तसं नसतं. दिवसाची कुठलीही वेळ असो, नजर चुकून चालत नाही. कारण आमच्या हातून चूक झाली तर त्याची रिअॅक्शन लगेच मिळणार असते. माझा दिवस हा असा, घरातली कामं उरकून गाडीवर हजर झाले की लक्षपूर्वक काम करण्याचा असतो.
लोकलची मोटरमन म्हणून दहा वषेर् काम केल्यानंतर घाट ड्रायव्हर आणि मेल ड्रायव्हर या दोन वरच्या पायऱ्या माझ्यासाठी खुल्या झाल्या. तिथे काम करावं की नाही असा विचार होता. कारण दिवसाचं शेड्युल पूर्णपणे बदलणार होतं. पण त्या दोन पदांच्या एवढ्या जवळ पोहोचल्यावर आता या दोन पायऱ्याही ओलांडाव्यात असं वाटलं आणि मी त्या दोन्ही पायऱ्या चढले. मागच्याच वषीर् घाट ड्रायव्हरचे काम केल्यानंतर आता मेल ड्रायव्हर म्हणून कार्यरत आहे. माझा दिवसाचा बराचसा वेळ प्रवासातच जातो. दिवसाची सुरुवात घरातली कामं उरकण्याने होते तर दिवसाचा शेवट गाडी व्यवस्थित इच्छित स्थळी पोहोचवण्याने होतो. घरी असते तेव्हा संसाराचं रहाटगाडगं चालवायचं आणि कामावर असते तेव्हा हजारो लोकांना वाहून नेणारी ट्रेन चालवायची यातच माझा दिवस संपतो. एकीकडे घराची आणि दुसरीकडे लोकांची गाडी मी चालवित असते.
Translation - English A day in my life – at home and on train
My day starts like every woman’s, with the morning haste to complete all the chores at home. I rush every morning to get everything done. Though now I have gotten used to all of this. I am bound like everyone else to ticking hands of the clock. The only difference is that my work is completely different because in my line of work I can’t afford to be late. Sometimes even I tire of all the rushing around, but I cannot deny my responsibilities. Even though you might be highly accomplished professional it is essential to balance that with personal life especially in my field of work where everything running on time is highly essential. You need to be highly disciplined, accurate and focused. There is no room for delay at all. The engine should be ready before the train can be started. If the train has to start its journey on time, it means that you have to be there on time to get everything ready. Trains and signals don’t understand what list of tasks you have at home or what troubles you. Signal doesn’t even know the colour it is flashing, we need to see the colour. In my field, it is extremely important to be extremely focused at work. While doing a desk job, if you make a mistake, it is easy to correct it and if needed change the entire file, but not so with us. Whatever the time of day, it is highly essential work to work flawlessly because even if there is one single mistake, then the consequence of the mistake is evident immediately. This is day in my life, balancing work the train of work at home and office with precision and extreme focus.
After working as motorwoman for 10 years, I got the opportunity to work as a ‘ghat’ driver and mail driver. I wondered whether I should take these opportunities as my daily schedule would change completely. I decided to not let go of these opportunities when I had gotten so close to them and I accepted them. After working last year as ‘ghat’ driver, currently I am working as a mail driver. Most of my day is spent travelling. My day starts with completing my work housework, while my day ends with ensuring that the train reaches its destination. When I am at home I ensure that train of life runs smoothly and at work ensure that the train that transports hundreds of people runs smoothly. This is how I spend my days, running the train of my house and work smoothly on schedule.
