Portuguese to English: UFPA: Pesquisa com suco natural previne doenças cardiovasculares

UFPA: A research with natural juice affirms that it prevents cardiovascular diseases.
The mix of tucumã, cupuaçu and orange may be a new preventing instrument against cardiovascular diseases, especially arteriosclerosis. A natural beverage, a mix of these three fruits has been tested in the Chemical and Food Engineering Laboratory of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA). The research has been developed by the Mastering student Carissa Bichara and the professor Hervé Rogez, from the department of Chemical and Food Engineering.
Carissa explains that the mixed juice of tucumã, cupuaçu and orange is rich in carotenoids. These substances are antioxidants, it means that they help preventing diseases because they catch the free radicals that are harmful for the organism. In case of coronarian diseases, the main risk is the oxidation of the called Low Density Lipoprotein (VLDL) on the arteries walls which harm the blood circulation. There are, though, studies that prove the efficiency of carotenoids in reducing the VLDL oxidation which are protective elements against arteriosclerosis among other cardiovascular disease. The efficiency of the juice must be proved after tests in humans, which start today, January 5. Thirty volunteers will be selected to have the juice twice a day for 60 days. Each volunteer will have their blood tested by four collections, one before start having the juice, and the other threes on every 15 days. The volunteers will have also access to their triglycerides, cholesterol and glucose control. The research received its approval by the Ethic Committee for Experiments involving Humans. The volunteers may be men over 30 years old. People interested must look for Carissa Bichara until today at the Chemical and Food Engineering Laboratory of UFPA.
