Source text - English General Conditions of Work
1. Contract shall always be concluded directly between the interpreter and either the conference organizer, or else an intermediary duly entrusted by the conference organizer with the contractual and financial responsibility of recruiting interpreters.
2. The functions of the interpreter shall exclude the written translation of texts; they shall therefore be confined to the interpretations of spoken proceedings and shall not cover any event not specifically provided for in the contract. The interpreter shall be bound by the strictest professional secrecy. The interpreter shall be morally responsible for the integrity of his or her work and shall not bow to any pressure in performing it. Persons not belonging to the team of interpreters may not be used as interpreters to complement the team, or otherwise make use of the interpretation channels of the simultaneous interpretation equipment without the prior consent of the consulting interpreter or head of team. The distribution of work among the members of the team will be established by the interpreters themselves.
3. A day’s interpretation shall not normally last for longer than two periods of 2 ½ to 3 hours each, separated by a break of at least 1 ½ hours. If this length of time is likely to be exceeded, the convener shall authorize either the reinforcement of the interpreter’s team in advance, or else their replacement by a fresh team.
4. The services of the interpreter shall be provided solely for direct and immediate use by the listeners; no recordings may be made, either by listeners or anyone else, without the prior consent of the interpreters concerned.
5. For their technical and terminological preparation the organizer shall send the interpreters a complete set of documents (programme, agenda, minutes of previous meetings, reports, etc) in each of the working languages of the conference as early as possible, but no later than 15 days before the beginning of the conference.
If a text has to be read aloud during the conference, the organizer shall see that the interpreters receive a copy of it beforehand (see previous paragraph). The speaker shall be warned by the organizer that the reading speed for a text for which interpretation is to be provided must not exceed 100 words per minute (3 minutes per double-spaced typewritten page). The interpreter shall be under no obligation to provide interpretation of written statements if he or she has not received the text of the statement in sufficient time to study it. If films are shown during a meeting, no interpretation of the sound-track shall be provided unless the sound is transmitted directly to the interpreters’ headphones and unless the script has been supplied to the interpreters beforehand and the commentary is spoken at a normal speed.
6. The remuneration and the allowances are determined by mutual agreement. The remuneration shall be paid unless otherwise provided by law, net of withholding tax.
7. Travel conditions should be such that they do not impair either the interpreter’s health or the quality of his/her work following a journey.
8. ISO standards 2603 and 4043 lay down the requirements for built-in and mobile booths and simultaneous interpreting equipment. If these standards are not complied with and the interpreter responsible for liaison with the organizer considers that the quality of the booths and technical equipment is not good enough to enable the team to do its work satisfactorily, or that they represent a danger to health, the team shall be under no obligation to provide simultaneous interpretation. The use of television screens, either in order to improve the direct view of the speaker and the hall, or even, in exceptional cases, as its replacement, is only acceptable with the advanced consent of the interpreters involved.
For cases where remote interpretation is used (any form or teleconference or videoconference requiring the use of a video screen or monitor), it is absolutely necessary to respect the conditions stipulated in ISO 2603, with particular emphasis on article 7.1 regarding sound, and to ensure that the whole range of frequencies between 125 and 125,000 Hz is being provided in the case of and ISDN transmissions.
9. If for serious reasons the interpreter should ask to be released from the present engagement, he or she shall arrange to be replaced on the same conditions by a qualified colleague who has been approved by the convener and, where an interpreter recruited the team, by the recruiting interpreter.
10. It is expressly agreed that any disputes which may arise in connection with the present contract shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of the place of the interpreter’s domicile. The law of that country shall be applicable.

1. En todos los casos el contrato será celebrado entre el intérprete y el organizador de la conferencia, o en su defecto con un intermediario que cuente con la responsabilidad contractual y financiera requerida para reclutar intérpretes, y con la confianza necesaria por parte del organizador.
2. Las atribuciones del interprete no deberán incluir cualquier tipo de traducción escrita de textos; deberán por ende limitarse a la interpretación de procesos orales y no deberán abarcar ningún otro evento que no este estipulado en el contrato. El intérprete estará sujeto a la más estricta confidencialidad profesional. El intérprete será moralmente responsable por la integridad de su propio trabajo y no deberá ceder ante alguna presión al realizar el mismo. Personas que no pertenezcan al grupo de intérpretes no pueden trabajar como interpretes para complementarlo, ni hacer uso de los canales de interpretación del equipo de interpretación simultánea sin el previo consentimiento del intérprete consultor o el líder del grupo. 3. Un día de interpretación no deberá durar más allá de 2 periodos de 2 horas y media a 3 horas cada uno, con un receso de por lo menos 1 hora y media. Si se cree que el periodo de tiempo probablemente sea excedido, el organizador deberá autorizar por adelantado ya sea el refuerzo de grupo de interpretes, o, en su defecto, su reemplazo por un nuevo grupo.
4. Los servicios del intérprete serán proporcionados únicamente para uso directo e inmediato de la audiencia; no se deberán realizar grabaciones, ya sea por la audiencia o alguna otra persona, sin el previo consentimiento de los intérpretes en involucrados.
5. Para la preparación técnica y terminológica el organizador deberá enviar a los intérpretes un juego completo de documentos (programa de actividades, orden del día, acta de reuniones previas, reportes, etc.) en cada uno de los idiomas que serán utilizados en la conferencia lo mas pronto posible, no después de 15 días previos a comenzar la conferencia.
Si un documento debe ser leído en voz alta durante la conferencia, el organizador debe asegurarse que el intérprete reciba una copia del mismo de antemano (lea el párrafo anterior). El organizador deberá advertir al orador que la velocidad de lectura de un texto que va a ser interpretado no deberá sobrepasar las 100 palabras por minuto (3 minutos por cada página impresa a doble espacio) El interprete no tendrá la obligación de proveer una interpretación de declaraciones escritas si él o ella no ha recibido el texto de la declaración con el tiempo suficiente para estudiarlo. Si videos son exhibidos durante una reunión, no se prestará ninguna interpretación de los diálogos, a menos que el sonido sea transmitido directamente a los audífonos del interprete y también que el guión haya sido entregado al interprete de antemano y los comentarios sean transmitidos a una velocidad normal.
6. La remuneración y asignaciones están determinadas por mutuo acuerdo. La remuneración deberá ser pagada, salvo caso contrario previsto en la ley, libre de impuesto
7. Las condiciones de viaje deben ser tales que no afecten ya sea la salud del intérprete o la calidad de su trabajo luego de un viaje.
8. Las normas ISO 2603 y 4043 establecen los estándares necesarios para cabinas de interpretación estacionarias y móviles, además de los requisitos para el equipo de interpretación simultánea. Si estas normas no son obedecidas y el intérprete responsable de ser un vínculo con el organizador considera que la calidad de las cabinas y del equipo técnico no es lo suficientemente bueno para permitir al grupo realizar su trabajo satisfactoriamente, o que los mismos constituyan un riesgo para la salud, el grupo no tendrá obligación de realizar interpretación simultánea. El uso de pantallas de televisión, ya sea para mejorar la vista directa del orador o la audiencia, inclusive, en casos excepcionales, como su reemplazo, es sólo aceptable con el previo consentimiento de los intérpretes involucrados.
Para casos en los cuales se realizará interpretación remota (cualquier forma de tele-conferencia o videoconferencia que requiera el uso de una pantalla de video o monitor), es absolutamente necesario respetar las condiciones estipuladas en la norma ISO 2603, con un énfasis particular en el artículo 7.1 con respecto al sonido, para asegurar que todo el campo de frecuencias entre 125 y 125,000 Hz sea proporcionado, en el caso de transmisiones ISDN.
9. Si por razones serias el interprete pidiese retirarse del presente compromiso, el o ella deberá coordinar su reemplazo, bajo las mismas condiciones, por un colega calificado que haya sido aprobado por el organizador y, en el caso de que un interprete haya sido el responsable por reclutar al grupo de interpretación, por el intérprete a cargo de contratar a los miembros del grupo.

Why Americans have plenty of time to read this
AS MOST Americans will tell you if you can stop them long enough to ask, working people in the United States are as busy as ever. Sure, technology and competition are boosting the economy; but nearly everyone thinks they have increased the demands on people at home and in the workplace. But is the overworked American a creature of myth?
A pair of economists have looked closely at how Americans actually spend their time. Mark Aguiar (at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston) and Erik Hurst (at the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business) constructed four different measures of leisure.* The narrowest includes only activities that nearly everyone considers relaxing or fun; the broadest counts anything that is not related to a paying job, housework or errands as “leisure”. No matter how the two economists slice the data, Americans seem to have much more free time than before.
Over the past four decades, depending on which of their measures one uses, the amount of time that working-age Americans are devoting to leisure activities has risen by 4-8 hours a week. But why do Americans feel so harried? Weirdly, prosperity may be to blame in two ways. First, thanks to rising real incomes, an American's time is worth more now. A walk in the park is more expensive than it used to be. Second, economic advances allow people to squeeze ever more possible activities, both work and leisure, into a day, which encourages people to try to do too much.
Finally, there is the changing nature of work. Mobile phones and e-mail make people accountable on short notice, and competition may make them less secure in their jobs. So even if they are playing golf or walking in the park, they may feel as if they are working. It is surely nicer to feel overworked in the park than to be overworked at the office, but few Americans seem to look at it that way. Think about that in your spare time.

Sin duda, la tecnología y la competencia están impulsando la economía, pero casi todos sienten que éstas han incrementado las demandas de la gente en sus hogares y lugares de trabajo. Pero, ¿es el estadounidense con exceso de trabajo una criatura mítica?
Dos economistas han examinado detenidamente la manera en que los estadounidenses verdaderamente utilizan su tiempo.
