English to Czech: Y. Levin - Recovering the Case for Capitalism
Source text - English
For friends of capitalism, the last two years have not been pleasant. First came a cascade of market calamities that seemed almost designed to confirm the worst clichés about free enterprise. The crisis had it all: reckless investors, careless lending, irresponsible borrowing, wild speculation, charlatan financiers, signs of under-regulation, retirees losing their life savings while Wall Street fat cats got their bonuses, and even the sight of Alan Greenspan apologizing to a congressional committee for keeping the reins too loose.
Then came the response from Washington. By the middle of last year, the federal government essentially owned the nation's largest bank, largest insurance company, and largest automaker; managed a substantial portion of the financial sector; and was declaring winners and losers in massive corporate deals ad hoc. Meanwhile, government spending soared, and lawmakers were busy planning new entitlement programs even as our existing ones were falling into bankruptcy.
For a moment, it seemed as though all of this would cause the American public to lose its faith in the market economy. Indeed, last April, pollster Scott Rasmussen found that only 53% of Americans agreed with the proposition that capitalism was better than socialism.
That moment eventually passed, and has now been replaced by a wave of populist discontent directed as much at the government as at the market. But the defenders of free enterprise should not take too much pleasure from this turn in public opinion. While it suggests that people are uneasy with the instability of the day, it has not formed itself into an argument in defense of American capitalism, or even a coherent case against the intentions of the liberal majority in Washington. To direct the public toward such a case, we will need to explain what is at risk, what is at stake, and why it matters.
Such an explanation is no simple matter. After decades of defending one tree or another, many friends of capitalism have lost sight of the forest — of what democratic capitalism is, of its virtues and vices, its strengths and weaknesses, its political and moral as well as its economic justifications. Our first task now is therefore a recovery of that understanding, which will clarify both our objections to the policy direction of the moment and our prescription for a better way.
Translation - Czech Poslední dva roky nebyly pro zastánce kapitalismu příjemné.
V polovině minulého roku federální vláda v podstatě vlastnila největší banku v zemi, největší pojišťovnu a největšího výrobce automobilů. Dále spravovala podstatnou část finančního sektoru a ad hoc rozhodovala o vítězích a poražených v případě mamutích firemních zakázek. Výdaje státu mezitím rostly do závratných výšin a zákonodárci měli plné ruce práce s vymýšlením nových programů sociální podpory, přestože ty stávající bankrotovaly.

Jinými slovy: jak připravit největší světový turnaj v normálně neřešitelném čase necelého roku, s veleskromným rozpočtem a přitom s grácií, několika rekordy a maximální spokojeností hlavních aktérů.
Země už za sebou měla pořadatelství ženského ME 1995 i MS juniorek o šest let později. A světový turnaj žen měl být logickým vrcholem jedné výjimečné generace. Jiný cíl už na horizontu neležel. A šance uspět nebyla malá…
Před novým prezidentem ČBF a zároveň šéfem Organizačního výboru turnaje stála záplava úkolů.
Organizační výbor proto uvedl do chodu zrychlený režim.
Ocenil i pomoc svého předchůdce v čele ČBF Zdeňka Zajíčka a ministra Eduarda Janoty, tedy dvou mužů z vedení ministerstva financí.
Ekonomický propadák mistrovství světa v lyžování 2009 zavíral mnohé dveře a komplikoval spousty jednání s možnými sponzory i politiky. „Všichni říkali: Hlavně aby to nebyl druhý Liberec,“ přiznal Miroslav Jansta.
I proto bylo stěžejní, že všechny přijaté peníze byly doslova zaštítěné hlavami členů vedení ČBF a potažmo celým basketbalovým hnutím. Nikdo nechtěl dát ani korunu do jakékoliv soukromé firmy, která by pro MS zajišťovala případné služby. „A přitom šlo aspoň o řád nižší částky než u lyžařského šampionátu,“ porovnal prezident ČBF.
On při tom neměl víc než 11 měsíců.
A třeba tým turecké basketbalové federace čítal 60 lidí.
My jsme se zase snažili i kvůli penězům o střídmost.
A dál?
Vznikl početný hlavní organizační výbor a tři další v jednotlivých městech, tedy Ostravě, Brně a Karlových Varech. Před nimi stálo několik náročných úkolů: připravit kvalitní světovou akci, ukázat v dobrém světle Českou republiku a nastartovat v zemi basketbalový boom.
U nás to v halách žilo, i když český tým zrovna nehrál. Karlovy Vary jako místo závěrečných bojů získaly uznání a generální sekretář FIBA Patrick Baumann nám za to osobně děkoval.“
Ovšem i sportovní stránka turnaje zaznamenala jeden významný unikát.
Turnaj vedle toho získal i několik historických primátů.
A ještě jedna událost ohromila bosse světové federace – vůbec poprvé uskutečněné slavnostní zahájení ženského MS na brněnském hradě Špilberku, kde pozdravy v jazycích všech zúčastněných reprezentací excelovala moderátorka Barbora Černošková.
Všechno do sebe perfektně zapadávalo už od startu mistrovství v našlapané brněnské hale, kde české lvice odehrály základní a osmifinálovou skupinu.
Všichni byli nadšení, včetně lidí, co do té doby basket nesledovali.
Obrovsky ocenil práci všech členů svého velkého týmu i lokální výbory v jednotlivých městech. „Všichni pracovali v euforii, bez jakýchkoliv osobních zájmů a s jediným cílem - aby se to povedlo,“ dodal Křiváček. A pak ve shodě s Miroslavem Janstou musel zmínit ještě jednoho obzvlášť významného, ač neoficiálního člena organizačního výboru - prezidenta země Václava Klause, bývalého prvoligového hráče.
Vedle prezidenta v němž figurovaly i další české celebrity – olympijská vítězka v rychlobruslení Martina Sáblíková, špičkový kardiochirurg Jan Pirk, držitel Českého lva Ivan Trojan a supermodelka Karolína Kurková.
I samy stříbrné lvice doceňovaly velikost MS až postupně.
Měli jsme v plánu vysílat do světa spoty o Česku a další aktivity, ale nenašli jsme společnou řeč,“ litovali oba šéfové MS.
Rekordy lámala i televizní sledovanost. Finále mezi lvicemi a USA vidělo téměř půl milionu lidí a byl to třetí nejsledovanější přenos historie programu ČT4. Z hlediska zásahu, tedy počtu lidí, kteří přenos sledovali aspoň tři minuty nepřetržitě, šlo dokonce o číslo 1! A třeba úvodní zápas Číny na MS mělo vidět neuvěřitelných 250 milionů čínských diváků.
Od požáru k nesmrtelnosti
Jenže možná nechybělo moc a všechna tahle nej mohla být zcela zhacena. Pátý den turnaje, kdy už se rychle blížila finálová část v Karlových Varech, zachvátil právě KV arénu úmyslně založený požár! „To byl nejhorší okamžik celého mistrovství. Mohlo to ohrozit celou finálovou část. Kvůli poškozené elektroinstalaci mohla roztát ledová plocha a my bychom bývali hráli vodní pólo,“ řekl Stanislav Křiváček k incidentu s mnohamilionovými škodami.

Translation - English MIRACLES WITHIN THREE DAYS OR HOW THE FIBA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FOR WOMEN WAS HELD IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC
At the beginning it seemed a Mission Impossible that even Tom Cruise with mammoth logistical support would be unable to accomplish. And at the end? At the end it turned out to be a phenomenal success. Not only was the mission accomplished in an extremely short time, but it managed to exceed all expectations as well – to such an extent that the captains of international basketball have requested from the Czechs a manual and a lecture on how to make miracles happen within three days!
To put it in other words: how to organize the biggest world tournament in the unreasonable period of one year, and with an extremely modest budget, but with grace, several broken records and maximum satisfaction of all the people involved. Thanks to the Czech ability to improvise and to learn while working, as well as thanks to an army of 600 organizers and volunteers, who – apart from a few exceptions – worked for free during the preparation stages as well as during the tournament itself.
Gather up and hear the tale of the 16th FIBA World Championship for Women as seen through the eyes of two men whose “heads” served as the collateral that was to guarantee that everything runs nice and smooth.
Before the Curtain Rises
Jiří Hamza, who – along with Jan Bobrovský – was the author of the incredibly successful women’s team in Brno, and who, for several years, was the manager of the Czech Women’s National Team and the Vice-Chairman of the Czech Basketball Federation, was the one who came up with the idea to invite the cream of world’s women’s basketball to the Czech Republic for the second time in history (Czechoslovakia hosted the tournament in 1967).
In early 2007, the CBF Committee led by Zdeněk Zajíček filed an application to host the WC in 2010, as did Latvia, France and Australia. After Latvia had been chosen to host the European Championship in 2009, they cancelled their application. France did the same thing before the September deadline for confirming the application.
The Czech delegation was then invited to a session of the FIBA Central Board in Chicago, before which Australia took back its application. The Czech Republic was thus chosen to organize the championship that was to take place in Brno and Ostrava. The Vice-Chairman of the CBF Jiří Hamza also settled the initial payment related to the nomination.
It certainly contributed to the credit of the Czech Republic that Gambrinus Brno, in which team Jiří Hamza and Jan Bobrovský concentrated the cream of Czech women basketball players, for a long time reaped successes on the international level and even managed to win the Euro League. The players of this team were at the same time the core of the national team, which – again under the leadership of coach Bobrovský – repeatedly qualified for Olympic Games as well as World Championships, and which, more importantly, managed to win the silver and gold medals at two European Championships in a row.
The country had already organized the European Championship in 1995 and the Junior World Championship six years later. The world tournament was to become a logical climax for one exceptional generation of players. There was no other goal on the horizon. And the chance to succeed was not insignificant…
After the championship was awarded to the Czech Republic, the organization work barely started. As the President of the CFB Zdeněk Zajíček, the Vice-Chairman Jiří Hamza and other members of the committee were incredibly busy at that time, no team that would coordinate the preparation was appointed, the budget was not allocated, and it was even unclear when the tournament was to be held. The situation further worsened in the spring of 2009 when the then CBF committee wanted to ask for an extension of its mandate, which normally would not have coincided with the time when the WC was scheduled to take place (i.e. September and October 2010). For this reason the committee even summoned an extraordinary general meeting of the CBF where new leadership was to be elected.
The work carried out by the committee, however, had, for a long time, stirred dissatisfaction with a number of the members of the basketball movement, which was one of the reasons why Miroslav Jansta, the owner of the basketball club in Nymburk who had been a member of the committee since 2006, decided to run for the position of President. The then committee eventually decided not to run for re-election and resigned from their office. The general meeting then elected a brand new leadership headed by President Jansta.
Jiří Hanza, who had been the Vice-Chairman of the committee up to then, turned down the offer to become a Vice-Chairman of the organizing committee and took no further part in the organization of the tournament.
What do we do next about the championship?
The new President of the CBF as well as the Head of the Organizing Committee had a myriad of tasks on their hands. It was great news for the tournament that the committee managed to hire Stanislav Křiváček, a functionary of the club in Klatovy, and an able organizer, who successfully coordinated the Veteran World Championship that was held in the Czech Republic in June and July 2009.
Then the organization frenzy started and … Actually, before it all started, Stanislav Křiváček went to Thailand, where the Junior Girls World Championship was being held, to gather some experience. To his immense surprise, he was greeted with the FIBA bosses asking him: “Mr. Krivacek, are you actually going to organize the tournament?”
At that time, there was less than a year left to the start of the tournament and the standard time for preparing such an event was at least three years. Therefore, the Organizing Committee switched to ultra-fast mode. To use traffic terminology, the tournament was given absolute right of yield.
To put it shortly – the venues had to be prepared quickly, the budget had to be compiled and approved, the organizational structure had to be designed and implemented, and the support of mayors, regional authorities, ministries and even of the Czech Television had to be obtained. At that time the country was run by a caretaker government, which was why it was necessary to obtain the support of the two main political parties (the Civic Democrats and the Social Democrats) through their respective chairmen Mirek Topolánek and Jiří Paroubek.
“We needed their approval, as the WC would represent the whole country, and also because women’s sport in our country had not seen such an event in a long time. And they soon understood that it was going to be the biggest sports event of the year,” emphasized Miroslav Jansta.
He also appreciated the help provided by his predecessor in the position of President of CBF Zdeněk Zajíček and by the Minister of Finance Eduard Janota. “It was not by means of direct financial aid, but they both looked for other possibilities, for instance how to get the support of companies that are partly owned by the state.”
No More Liberec!
There was an ominous shadow hovering over any request for finance, however, and that was the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships that had been held in Liberec in 2009. The utter economic failure of the championships closed a lot of doors and complicated the negotiations with possible sponsors, as well as with politicians. “They all kept saying: We hope this is not going to turn into another Liberec again,” admitted Miroslav Jansta.
For this reason, it was crucial that the heads of the members of CBF management served as collateral, so to say, for any money received. Nobody was willing to give any money to any sort of private company that would provide the necessary services for the WC. “And we mustn’t forget that the amounts were significantly smaller than in the case of the skiing championships,” compared the President of CBF.
In the meantime, Stanislav Křiváček, his second in command, gained the necessary experience. “When I was first asked to take the position of director, I barely knew that the WC was going to be held in the Czech Republic,” he said. “But when I got about six really thick manuals from FIBA that dealt with all areas of the tournament, I got a clearer idea. I have been to the Olympics as a supervisor, but now I was supposed to run the whole thing by myself,” added the man who was given a protocol for every aspect of the tournament by FIBA. “I sometimes found some of the requirements ridiculous, but during the tournament itself I often appreciated how useful the detailed rules were.”
The more he knew, the clearer it was to him that his organizing team would need at least a year more. However, he had no more than 11 months. “Just negotiating sponsorship with companies at a time of a financial crisis was more than difficult. What is more, as it was already the autumn, their budgets had already been finalized in most cases. However, thanks to the people from CBF management, we managed to obtain the necessary finance for our modest budget.”
Money, Money, Money
By a modest budget we mean CZK 153 million, out of which 40 million was provided by the state. After subtracting the fees due to FIBA and the money spent on advertising rights, only a rather small amount was left for organizing the tournament. Despite all that the tournament recorded a profit of almost CZK 2 million. To compare – the promotion of the World Cup 2010 in Turkey alone cost USD 120 million – i.e. about CZK 2.25 billion. And for example the team of the Turkish Basketball Federation consisted of 60 people. “The opening ceremony in Turkey cost about as much as our whole tournament,” added Stanislav Křiváček with a bit of exaggeration.
Still, FIBA’s quality requirements were in all areas as high as possible. “For instance, originally they wanted us to invite well-known international bands to play in all our venues. But we tried to keep things on a smaller scale due to our limited budget. In the end, FIBA requested the bands that played in KV Arena for their future events,” smiled the director of the WC.
What else? The organizing cities contributed money that was used to rent the venues. The cities were chosen based on economic criteria, and it was clear from the start that, for reasons of tradition and previous successes, one of the destinations must be Brno. Even though there were doubts as to the only available venue in Brno (the sport hall in Vodov), its small size and the resulting atmosphere eventually turned out to be advantages appreciated even by FIBA.
The key trump card that the organizers had in their hands when negotiating marketing support and obtaining partners for the WC was Česká sportovní – a master in its field and the organizer of several international sporting events, such as the Final Four Tournament of the Euro League for Men.
The main organizing committee was appointed containing a large number of people, as well as three smaller committees in the individual cities – i.e. in Ostrava, Brno and Karlovy Vary. They were facing a number of difficult tasks: to prepare a top-quality international event, present the Czech Republic in a favorable light, and get every one in the country excited for basketball.
What the WC involves
“The new committee set out to bring basketball in our country back to where it once used to be,” emphasized Stanislav Křiváček. That is why an Event Team was created that was supposed to promote the tournament in all possible ways. That is why a youth tournament was organized simultaneously with the main event, and that is why we decided to invite the legends of the sport to attend the final days of the tournament in Karlovy Vary.
In order to promote the tournament we also launched events such as the “Basketball Squares”, where children could have a good time, or the “Adopt a Team” event, which was a project aimed at obtaining fan support for all the 16 teams participating in the tournament. “In exchange” for tickets to the tournament the students from the school that is best at basketball in each of the 14 regions of the Czech Republic plus two schools from Ostrava and Brno came to root for one of the teams that they had chosen.
Further thousands of boys and girls arrived from schools in the host cities, as well as from a number of schools from all around the country. These young fans often came wearing the colors of the team they were going to support and root for. It was the massive and active involvement of schools that was one of the keys to the high numbers of people who attended the championship.
“When there were several thousands children rooting for the teams in the 5th to 16th playoff games that were usually played early in the morning, the representatives of FIBA just shook their heads in disbelief,” added Křiváček and he used a comparison: “We knew that in Latvia, the European Championship was over the moment their team was relegated. Our venues were full of excited people even when the Czech team was not playing. Karlovy Vary, as the place where the playoff games were held, was hugely appreciated and the General Secretary of FIBA Patrick Baumann gave us his personal thank you.”
The tournament was unique also from the point of view of its results. It was the closest main event in women’s basketball (i.e. WC or OG) in the past 20 years.
Apart from that, the tournament managed to record several historic moments. One of these was the official charity of the WC that was called “Každý koš pomáhá” (loosely translated Every Basket Helps – a sum of money was donated to the charity every time the ball fell though the basket). The Czech captain Hana Horáková, the coach Lubor Blažek and even the American coach Geno Auriemma took part in this event – the coach promised to give a personal contribution for every 3-point shot scored by his team. The charity was aimed at building a “House for All Generations” in Prague and it managed to collect as much as CZK 680,000. One of the largest individual contributions was made by Elisabeth and Jonathan Hutchinson, who donated USD 1,900. These fans of the American national team came to support their team and found the unusual charity very interesting.
And there was yet another event that amazed the bosses of FIBA – the opening ceremony was held, for the first time, at the Špilberk Castle in Brno, where the moderator Barbora Černošková greeted all the participants in their native language, much to the amazement of all the people present. The ceremony was concluded by a 7-minute long fireworks performance with music. “The opening ceremony was my personal wish. I wanted to open the tournament in a dignified manner, to represent our country and to arouse feelings of national pride. A great thank you for this ceremony is due to Roman Onderka, the Lord Mayor of Brno,” said Miroslav Jansta about the magical evening at the end of September.
An unusual bet was concluded between the President of CBF and the Lord Mayor of Brno. Both placed a bet of CZK 5,000 with Tipsport (a betting company that was a partner of the tournament) saying that the Czech team will be in the final four. The odds of this rather bold bet were 4:1. After the Czech team won the surprising silver medals, they both won CZK 20,000, which they gave to the players who used the money for their celebrations.
Under the Auspices of the President
However, even the perfect work of all the organizers would little matter, if the main ingredient was missing – a determined and successful national team. The team was, however, still affected by the terrible result at the European Championship 2009, where it had finished on 9th/10th place. The new committee promptly reacted to the unpleasant atmosphere within the team and removed from his office coach Milan Veverka, who had succeeded Jan Bobrovský after the Olympic Games in Beijing.
CBF then had to find the right coach for the WC. At the insistence of many, Lubor Blažek, the coach of USK Prague who had been Jan Bobrovský’s assistant for nine years with the national tema, accepted this challenge, which turned out to be the best decision in his career. “It was a good choice,” said the CBF President after the tournament with relief.
In order to improve team spirit, the new committee decided, several months before the WC was scheduled to start, to pay to the players, as well as to coach Bobrovský, the financial bonuses the previous committee had promised them for the Olympics in Beijing.
The return on the investment was sweet indeed. Everything worked the way it should from the very start of the tournament in the packed venue in Brno, where the Czech team played their games in the preliminary round and the eighth-final group. What was to happen in KV Arena in Karlovy Vary 11 days later was a wonderful conclusion to the whole tournament. The players, coaches and members of all the teams could not have been more excited. Many people who sent tens of emails after the end of the tournament said that they had never seen or experienced anything like this in women’s basketball.
“It was an historic moment in the world of basketball,” said the Head-Manager of the American team Carol Callan. The representatives of WNBA, the most prestigious competition of women’s basketball, also sent a letter of congratulation to the organizers.
“The atmosphere in Karlovy Vary was unique mainly thanks to the success of our team and it managed to move Czech basketball miles forward. Everybody was excited, including people who had not been interested in basketball before. They kept thanking us for the experience and many of them cried tears of happiness. The volunteers who devoted a lot of time and all their skills to the success of the tournament cried, too. They were so happy they could have been a part of all this. Some of them were more than 70 years old,” added Stanislav Křiváček to unveil something from the backstage.
He immensely appreciated the work of all the members of his large team as well as the local committees in the individual host cities. “Everybody worked in a state of euphoria, absolutely selflessly, with one goal and one goal only – to make this happen,” said Křiváček. “We were very lucky in our choice of people – be it the heads of the local organizing committees Meesrs. Vrážel, Šafařík and Jirsa, or their colleagues.” The Secretary General of CBF Miloš Pražák also provided invaluable services. “He was of great support to use thanks to his experience with international organizations and the CBF committee.”
And then, in agreement with Miroslav Jansta, he had to mention another significant, albeit non-official, member of the organizing committee – the President of the Czech Republic Václav Klaus, who had himself played basketball at top competitive level.
“He took an active part in organizing the tournament, took patronage over it and came to support our team in the play-off games, which, even according to the representatives of FIBA, was absolutely unique. He even appeared in the TV ad before the tournament!” emphasized the director of the tournament. The commercial was viewed by 80,000 people within the first hour. Apart from the President, other Czech celebrities agreed to appear in the commercial – the 2-time Olympic Champion in speed-skating Martina Sáblíková, the outstanding heart surgeon Jan Pirk, the Czech Lion awardee Ivan Trojan and the supermodel Karolína Kurková.
It was she who was chosen to say the line “and let’s show our skill to the whole world” – one could hardly have foreseen that the result of the tournament would be so phenomenal and we would go on to win the first medal from a senior world championship in the history of independent Czech basketball - the outstanding silver medals, the value of which could hardly have been properly appreciated shortly after the tournament.
Big, Bigger, the Biggest!
The silver lionesses themselves came to appreciate the importance of the WC only gradually. The team captain Hana Horáková admitted after the tournament that there maybe had been too many promotion events and other duties for the players, but that, during the tournament and more significantly after it was over, she could see what effect it brought. Stanislav Křiváček added: “Sometimes the players were really surprised at the complex service and care they received during the tournament. It was often only during the tournament that they realized the extent of the thing they were the main part of.”
However, not everybody managed to understand the possibility the tournament offered to promote the Czech Republic in the record-breaking 155 countries to which the games were broadcast. “It was mainly the Ministry for Regional Development and CzechTourism. We were planning to broadcast advertisements about the Czech Republic and to launch other promotion activities, but we failed to find a common ground,” regretted both the bosses of the WC.
One thing everybody was completely satisfied with was the number of visitors who came to see the games. It was 60% higher compared to the previous WC in Brazil. “If we take into account that the population of Brazil is 200 million and the population of the Czech Republic is a mere 10 million, it is a huge success. It felt very good to see people queuing up for basketball tickets again. And there were hundreds of people waiting for the Czech team to show up after each game,” said Stanislav Křiváček.
More than 168,000 people visited the whole WC, which gives us an average of more than 2,700 people per game. The TV attention was also record-breaking. Almost half a million people in the Czech Republic watched the final game between the Czech lionesses and Team USA, making it the third most-watched live broadcast of the sports channel of the Czech Television (ČT4). In terms of the number of impressions, i.e. the number of people who watched the broadcast at least for 3 minutes at a time, it became the most-watched broadcast ever! An incredible number of 250 million people in China watched the opening game of their team.
From A Fire to Immortality
However, the whole event might have been ruined at the very start. On the fifth day of the tournament, when the final part that was to take place in Karlovy Vary was quickly approaching, a fire broke out in KV Arena! “That was the worst point of the whole tournament. It could have endangered the whole final part. The ice underneath the wooden floor could have melted due to the damaged electronic system, and we would have had to play water polo instead,” said Stanislav Křiváček about the incident that caused several millions’ worth of damage.
However, Fate granted this tournament a great deal of luck, so it managed to overcome even this “hot” moment. That brings us to another success of the WC Made in Czech – the very first congress about women’s basketball that was held in Karlovy Vary with delegates from almost 40 countries taking part. “The congress venue was absolutely packed, and the whole event was concluded by a standing ovation,” said the director of the tournament with well-deserved satisfaction in his voice. The director then, several weeks after the final game, flew to Geneva to give a lecture to the candidate countries for the WC 2014 at a special request of the FIBA bosses – the topic of his lecture was: “How the Czech manage to make miracles happen within three days”…
