Source text - Dutch In 2001 ontwikkelde het Atelier de Création Graphique een grafisch communicatieprogramma voor het Centre Pompidou. Gezichtsbepalend werd de reeks van affiches die Bernard in het kader van dit programma ontwierp voor belangrijke tentoonstellingen van het Centre – een hoogwaardige vorm van institutionele communicatie. Wat de affiches tot een reeks maakt, zijn de repeterende elementen ervan: formaten, type informatie, typogram, het gebruik van de DIN Engschrift kapitalen. Binnen de reeks worden deze terugkerende elementen op een telkens andere wijze geschakeld aan een sterk beeld: het portret van de kunstenaar of een karakteristiek beeld uit diens oeuvre. De wisselende combinatie van het beeld en de letters biedt Bernard een speelruimte die hij steeds weer verrassend benut.
Het eerste wat in dit affiche opvalt, is de passiviteit van de persoon en zijn peinzende blik. [pensif et passif] Roland Barthes zit licht voorover gebogen, de handen gevouwen in een pose tussen spanning en ontspanning in. Ook de blik heeft iets onbepaalds : dromerig en geconcentreerd tegelijk. De foto is uit 1938. Barthes is 23 jaar. Hij studeert aan de Sorbonne klassieke talen en Frans. Meer tijd besteedt hij aan het door hem opgerichte Antiek Theater van de Sorbonne [Groupe de Théatre Antique de la Sorbonne] die klassieke tragedies en blijspelen opvoert. Op de foto is hij geportretteerd in zijn dubbelrol van acteur en intellectueel.
Translation - French En 2001, l’Atelier de Création Graphique mis au point un programme de communication graphique pour le Centre Pompidou. La série d’affiches, annonçant d’importantes expositions, conçues par Bernard dans le cadre de ce programme, a été déterminante pour l’image du musée – le haut de gamme de la communication institutionnelle. La répétition de certains éléments – formats, type d’information, typogramme, utilisation des capitales DIN étroites – octroie une certaine homogénéité à l’ensemble. Dans la série, ces éléments récurrents sont reliés, d’une façon à chaque fois différente, à un visuel fort: le portrait de l’artiste ou une image caractéristique tirée de son œuvre. La combinaison fluctuante de l’image et des lettres offre à Bernard une marge de manœuvre qu’il exploite de manière toujours surprenante.
La passivité de la personne et son expression pensive sont ce qui nous frappe en premier dans cette affiche. Roland Barthes est légèrement incliné vers l’avant, les mains repliées dans une pose oscillant entre la tension et la relaxation. Son regard a également quelque chose d’indéfini : à la fois rêveur et concentré. La photo date de 1938. Barthes a 23 ans. Il étudie les langues classiques et le français à la Sorbonne. Il passe cependant plus de temps au Groupe de Théâtre Antique de la Sorbonne qu’il a lui-même fondé et qui porte à la scène des tragédies antiques et des vaudevilles. Il est représenté sur la photo dans son double rôle d’acteur et d’intellectuel.

Source text - English My first encounter with the paintings of Ina Van Zyl resembled that unusual moment in the course of any normal day when one experiences a lapse in consciousness. One’s mind slips into a state of limbo, and one’s eyes fix upon some detail in one’s visual field to observe it with a sense of intense detachment. This transfixed gaze decelerates the mind and things seem to stand still. One recognises the lapse only retrospectively when, just as quickly, all one’s senses kick in and become attentive to the whole environment. The interrupted process of conscious sensory reading continues as before and one is back and awake in the present. It is a moment when the subconscious mind comes to the forefront and one’s body is in a state of temporary hypnosis. But after the encounter with Van Zyl’s paintings, the return to conscious reading has a heightened intensity. Suddenly the frame of “normality” is sprung. What the eyes have seen unsettles what one thought one knew. The body’s sensory response to her work registers fascination, wonder, hesitancy and repulsion; feelings that sit on the opposite ends of the spectrum of emotive responses to things visual. The flood of disparate responses is unfamiliar and their proximity and reciprocity leave a residue of uncertainty. The detachment with which one began to view her paintings now demands a more critical enquiry.
Translation - French Ma première rencontre avec les peintures d’Ina van Zyl a correspondu à ce moment insolite au cours d’une journée tout ce qu’il y a de plus banal, lorsque votre conscience vous lâche, sans prévenir. L’esprit glisse dans un état second, et vos yeux se fixent sur un certain détail dans le champ visuel pour l’observer avec un sens de détachement intense. Ce regard figé enraye l’esprit et tout semble pétrifié. On ne réalise cette défaillance que rétrospectivement quand, de façon tout aussi soudaine, tous vos sens resurgissent et se mettent à scruter l’environnement général. Le processus, brièvement interrompu, de l’interprétation sensorielle consciente continue comme si de rien n’était et l’on revient, alerte, au présent. C’est un moment où l’inconscient passe au premier plan et où le corps se retrouve dans un état d’hypnose temporaire. Mais, à l’issue de la confrontation avec les peintures de Van Zyl, le retour à l’interprétation consciente a acquis une intensité exacerbée. Tout à coup, le cadre de la ‘normalité’ est dépassé. Ce que les yeux ont vu vient perturber ce que l’on croyait savoir. La réaction sensorielle du corps à l’œuvre de l’artiste exprime la fascination, l’émerveillement, l’hésitation et la répulsion ; des sentiments qui se situent à l’extrémité opposée du spectre des réactions émotionnelles à des éléments visuels. L’afflux de réactions disparates est incongru et leur proximité, conjuguée à leur réciprocité, laisse un résidu d’incertitude. Le détachement avec lequel on a commencé à examiner ses peintures requiert désormais une investigation plus critique.
