French to English: Les maladies hydriques affectent plusieurs millions de personnes
Translation - English Hydric diseases are affecting several millions of people
A new report from the Nigerien Ministry of Health has revealed that close to a quarter of the population of Niger suffers from bilharzias, a parasitic disease that can be contracted in infested river waters. About three millions of Nigeriens, out of the 13,4 millions accounted for in the country, have schistosomiasis, a parasitic disease whose first symptoms are characterised by skin eruptions and fever. A chronic infection can lead to urinary, vesical, hepatic, pulmonary, or intestinal diseases but can also affect the nervous system. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), parasitic diseases are endemic in regions where water distribution and decontamination systems are close to non-existent and where living conditions are poor. Niger, a large country enclosed south of Sahara, has the smallest number of wells per inhabitant in the world. Four out of five Nigeriens are living in rural areas where at least 40 % of them depend on wells to get water and are using the outdoors to go to the toilet. In partnership with Schistosomiasis Control Initiative (SCI), the nongovernmental organisation based in Great Britain, authorities from Niger have said to be responding to the problem by building a new laboratory dedicated to these diseases in Niamey, and by distributing medicines to heal patients. According to WHO, close to a billion people in the world, or one sixth of the world’s population, are under the threat of these parasitic diseases.
