Au cours de son séjour en France, le Bernin eut à s'affronter aux architectes français sur d'autres terrains que le Louvre. Les propositions de Mansart et du Bernin pour l'église funéraire des Bourbons que Colbert voulait faire construire à Saint-Denis (22 à 25) appartiennent les unes et les autres à la même famille des églises de plan centré à vaisseau central entouré d'une couronne de chapelles, qui remonte aux origines mêmes de la Renaissance italienne, aux speculations d'un Leonard de Vinci par exemple. Pour le Val-de-Grace, la reine mère a demandé au Bernin le dessin d'un maître-autel: c'est le projet de Le Muet et Le Duc qui sera exécuté (20-21), mais celui-ci comprend un baldaquin à la manière de celui que le Bernin avait imaginé pour Saint-Pierre de Rome, trente années plus tôt, et qui n'avait pas eu encore d'imitation en France. Ces deux cas permettent de cerner de plus près encore les convergences et les divergences des manières de construire italienne et française. Les divergences sont concentrées presque entièrement dans le domaine de l'architecture civile, tout soumis aux usages sociaux, alors que les modèles des églises italiennes s'imposent comme des références, des réussites qu'il faut dépasser.
Incomparables en revanche, sans précédent, et tardivement imitées en France sont les mises en scène des mystères divins, inventées par le Bernin, plasticien de génie, au baldaquin, à la chaire de Saint-Pierre, à l'autel de la Sainte-Thérèse en extase. La France classique va se mettre pour un siècle à ce baroque-là! Notamment dans la production des architectures éphémères (apparat des pompes funéraires, décors de fêtes et de théâtre), où les licences paraissent anodines du fait de leur fugacité. En 1670, Jean Lepautre, le dessinateur des décors à la romaine, enterrait le duc de Beaufort avec toute la pompe requise. Il s'était inspiré, semble-t-il, du castrum doloris, avec pyramide, squelettes et anges sonneurs de trompettes, que le Bernin avait dressé dans l'église Santa Maria d'Aracoeli pour le deuil de ce haut personnage. Parmi les réussites du genre figurent la pompe funèbre élevée par Le Brun pour le chancelier Séguier (1670), celles de Jean Bérain pour la reine Marie-Thérèse (1683) et pour le Grand Condé (1687) (26-27). « voilà tout ce qu'ont pu faire la magnificence et la piété pour honorer un héros; des titres, des inscriptions, vaines marques de ce qui n'est plus; des figures qui semblent pleurer autour d'un tombeau et de fragiles images d'une douleur que le temps emporte avec tout le reste; des colonnes qui semblent vouloir porter jusqu'au ciel le magnifique témoignage de notre néant; et rien enfin ne manque dans tous ces honneurs que celui à qui on les rend. » On aura reconnu l'oraison funèbre de Condé déclamée par Bossuet. Pour la pompe funèbre de Condé, Bérain était assisté par le père Ménestrier, jésuite, auteur d'un traité intitulé Des décorations funèbres (1683), grand pourvoyeur de métaphores compliquées à l'usage des fêtes, tristes ou gaies. Il avait ainsi inventé pour le pauvre Turenne un catafalque assez ridicule, dégorgeant de symboles.
Le seul ouvrage accompli laissé en France par le Bernin est un célèbre buste de Louis XIV, un marbre animé par le souffle baroque. Le Bernin n'est en fait qu'un sculpteur dont le geste généreux embrasse l'espace habituellement dévolu à l'architecte. Il a participé à l'avènement de la grande sculpture française du règne de Louis XIV: fortement mais insidieusement, car la France héritait en ce domaine d'une tradition. Le buste de Condé par Coysevox (28) ou celui de Mignard par Desjardins (29) dérivent du buste de Louis XIV. La belle idée développée par Le Brun au tombeau de sa mère dans la chapelle familiale Saint-Nicolas-du-Chardonnet (30) est neuve sans doute: mais cette résurrection saisie dans l'instant même de l'ouverture du tombeau rappelle les sépultures grandiloquentes du Bernin. Paradoxalement, le plus pur exemple parisien de la sculpture à la française sereine, pondérée, un peu hiératique est le tombeau de Mazarin (31 à 34): avec son priant, la main sur le coeur, et ses vertus, ce monument s'inscrit dans la suite des tombeaux d'Henri II (VI, 77-79) et d'Henri de Condé (VII, 15-16).

Bernini's Influence
During his time in France, Bernini competed with French architects for other projects in addition to the Louvre. He and Mansart both submitted proposals for the Bourbon mausoleum that Colbert wished to build at Saint-Denis (22-25). Each master designed the kind of centrally planned church with a corona of chapels around an open center that had haunted architects from the beginning of the Italian Renaissance – consider the speculations of Leonardo da Vinci, for example. At the Val-de-Grâce, the queen mother asked Bernini to submit a design for the high altar, but it was the existing project by Le Muet and Le Duc that was finally built (20-21). This consisted of a baldachin of the kind Bernini had conceived for St Peter's in Rome thirty years earlier, which had not yet been imitated in France. These two examples further clarify the similarities and differences between Italian and French building. The differences were almost entirely concentrated in civic architecture, which was completely subordinated to social custom, whereas Italian churches were reference points – challenges to be surpassed.
By contrast, Bernini's unprecedented and incomparable settings for the divine mysteries, which that brilliant sculptor produced in the baldachin and the throne of St Peter, and in the altar of St Theresa in ecstasy, were only belatedly imitated in France. Traditionalizing France decked itself in this kind of Baroque for a hundred years! This was most noticeable in the area of ephemeral architecture (such as ceremonial funerary apparatus, or banqueting and theatrical decor) where the excesses seemed harmless because of their transience. In 1670 Jean Lepautre, designer of Romanizing decoration, buried the Duc de Beaufort with all required obsequies. To mourn this great dignitary he was inspired, it seems, by the castrum doloris, with the pyramid, skeletons, and angelic trumpeters, that Bernini had set in the church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli. Other achievements of this genre included the state funeral organized by Le Brun for Chancellor Séguier (1670), as well as those organized by Jean Bérain for Queen Marie-Thérèse (1683) and for the Grand Condé (1687) (26-27). "Behold all that magnificence and piety can do to honor a hero: titles, inscriptions, futile ciphers of what is no more, figures who seem to weep around a tomb and frail images of a grief that time bears away with everything else, columns that seem to want to hurl at the heavens magnificent attestation of our emptiness; and in the end, nothing is missing from all these honors but the one to whom they are rendered". Thus the eulogy for Condé, as declaimed by Bossuet. Bérain was assisted over Condé's obsequies by Father Ménestrier, a Jesuit and author of a treatise entitled Des décorations funèbres (Funerary Décor, 1683), and a great enthusiast of complicated metaphors for use in festivals, whether melancholy or cheerful. Some ten years earlier, he had set up a similarly ludicrous bier for poor Turenne, likewise overflowing with symbols (q5).
The only finished work Bernini left in France is the famous bust of Louis XIV, a work in marble enlivened by a typically Baroque breeze. But Bernini was not the only sculptor whose gestural verve embraces space in an almost architectural way. His contribution to the florescence of great French sculpture under Louis XIV was strong but subtle, for France already had a tradition in this field. The bust of Condé by Coysevox (28), and that of Mignard by Desjardins (29), both derive from the bust of Louis XIV. Le Brun's concept for his mother's tomb in the family chapel at Saint-Nicolas-du-Chardonnet (30) is undeniably new – but this resurrection caught in the very moment of the tomb's opening recalls Bernini's melodramatic sepulchers. Paradoxically, the purest Parisian example of sculpture in the French manner – calm, moderate, and suitably devout – is the tomb of Mazarin (31-34). The figure praying, its hand on its heart, and the attendant Virtues belong to the tradition of the tombs of Henri II (VI, 77-79) and Henri de Condé (VII, 15-16).
