From the point of view of an editor with 20 years of experience commissioning and realizing architectural publications, this is a most unlikely book. Departing from an unhealthy situation in publishing which separates professional and academic books on the one side from architectural monographs on the other, a separation that established itself at a time when architecture became fashionable enough for practices to use books as marketing tools back in the 1980s, this book brings together intentions and resources in a rare manner. The team who conceived, wrote, and realized it also conceived, designed, and realized its sujet, the architectural projects presented here. The architects looked at their own body of work as source material, taking stock and delivering an account of what they understand to be the state of the art and the state of the discipline of architecture.
In this way, the role they assumed for themselves was not that of a book designer (although RDR design SA, an independent team of the RDR group did design the book), nor that of an artist whose œuvre would be explored and explained, nor that of a publisher who would promote an architect's œuvre, but rather the role of author. In assuming this role and training their professional eye on their own projects going back over 20 years, the office of Richter and Dahl Rocha put their expertise and experience, as well as the material results, in the service of professional publishing.
This is more than one can expect. Writing professional books is not considered a core business of architectural practices. On another note, looking at this book in this way is not an assessment of how successful it is in achieving its intentions and exploiting its resources. It is for the reader, the critic, and the book markets to make this assessment. Whatever the case may be, it is important to understand the value of the special type of book that emerged here as a possible model for future architectural publishing.
It is obvious what the making of such a paradigmatic book requires in terms of time, resources, personal commitment, and above all collective culture and team work. So it may have been rather appropriate that, when strolling with Ignacio Dahl Rocha through late-night Lausanne after a dinner with the team following a long evening session, what came to mind were words addressed to another designer, the French landscape architect André Le Nôtre, centuries ago: "Vous êtes un homme heureux."

Aus der Sicht eines Lektors, der seit 20 Jahren Architekturbücher akquiriert und realisiert, ist dies ein sehr unwahrscheinliches Buch. Es lässt eine ungesunde Situation auf den Buchmärkten hinter sich, wo Fachbücher und wissenschaftliche Publikationen auf der einen Seite von den Architektenmonographien auf der anderen getrennt sind – eine Trennung, die auf einen Moment in den 1980er Jahren zurückgeht, als Büros Bücher als Werbemittel zu nutzen begannen, weil Architektur dabei war in Mode zu kommen. Dagegen führt dieses Buch seine Ziele und Mittel auf eine seltene Weise zusammen. Es wurde konzipiert, verfasst und realisiert von demselben Team, das auch das behandelte Sujet, die dargestellten Architekturprojekte, entworfen, ausgearbeitet und realisiert hat. Die Architekten nehmen ihre eigenen Arbeiten als Gegenstand in den Blick, sie setzen sich auseinander mit ihnen und stellen dar, was aus ihrer Sicht der Stand der Dinge in der Architektur ist, in der Architektur als Baukunst wie als Beruf.
Die von ihnen auf diese Weise eingenommene Rolle ist also nicht die des Gestalters (auch wenn RDR design SA, eine eigenständige Einheit in der RDR group, das Buch tatsächlich gestaltet hat); auch nicht die des (Bau-)Künstlers, dessen Werk hier erkundet und gedeutet würde, und auch nicht jene eines Verlegers oder Herausgebers, der das Werk vor die Öffentlichkeit bringt. Ihre Rolle ist die des Autors. Indem sie sie einnehmen, indem sie sich mit ihren Kompetenzen über ihre eigenen Projekte der letzten 20 Jahre beugen, stellen Richter Dahl Rocha et Associés über das Gebaute hinaus auch ihr Wissen und ihre Erfahrung in den Dienst des Fachbuchs.
Das ist mehr, als man erwarten kann. Fachbücher zu schreiben zählt gemeinhin nicht zum Kerngeschäft von Architekturbüros. Übrigens steht dahin, wie erfolgreich dies hier nun betrieben worden ist; das sollen die Leser, Kritiker und Buchmärkte sagen. Aber es ist unabhängig davon wichtig zu begreifen, welchen Wert der sich hier abzeichnende spezielle Buchtyp als Modell für das Publizieren von Architektur in Zukunft haben könnte.
Was ein in dieser Weise beispielhaftes Buch an Zeit, Aufwand, Einsatz und vor allem Gemeinschaftskultur und Teamwork verlangt hat, ist nicht zu übersehen. Und so mag es recht gut ins Bild gepasst haben, als beim spätabendlichen Gang durch Lausanne mit Ignacio Dahl Rocha nach einem Essen mit dem Team am Ende eines langen Arbeitsabends ein Wort aufkam, das Jahrhunderte zuvor an einen anderen Entwerfenden gerichtet worden war, den französischen Landschaftsarchitekten André Le Nôtre: "Vous êtes un homme heureux."

I have worked as a free-lance editor and occasional translator for architectural books for 25 years. In editing as well as translating, the focus is on the texts, which are demanding in many respects, including the diversity of formats and sometimes intrinsic ideosyncracies. To achieve a translation that is ready for production requires a highly specific mix of quite diverse skills. This is particularly true when it comes to texts for architectural publishing: correctness and formal consistency of a translation, as much as of any text, need to be matched by informal qualities that are hard to control by any quality management – such as issues of argument, even on an intuitive level, adroitness and elegance and, not least, the right “smell.“ Such is the balance that I am seeking out for every commission.
