Most of my experience involves working with humanities, arts and marketing texts, but I am interested in all opportunities to practice the art of translation and to research the French language, which has fascinated me since I was a child.
I have a liberal arts background, with a B.A. in French and a minor track in Education from Vassar College, and a M.A. in French Literature from the University of Southern California. I began studying French at age five and have visited or lived/studied/worked in France every year since 1993. I have the great fortune to reside currently in Pasadena, California, close to Caltech, a prestigious institute of science and technology.
As an undergrad, I passed an upper-level French translation course with distinction, and translated fifty pages of American fiction into French for my senior thesis. After college I worked for two years in public relations, specializing in travel & tourism and Internet accounts. My inspiration for returning to school to pursue a graduate degree was the poetry translation work I did with a UT English professor and poet. I had a merit fellowship while at USC, where I focused on eighteenth- and twentieth-century texts, both fiction and critical. My Master's Thesis pertained to the relevence of the American Savage in French Literature of the Enlightenment.
My most recent work in the field includes writing scripts/lessons on three French authors for The Teaching Company's "Great Authors" television series; translating a cookbook; and translating complaints to a customer service center.
