English to Bengali: The abolition of Zamindari system General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: History
Source text - English The abolition of the Zamindari system was the culmination of Sher e Bangla Ak Fazlul Huq's politics in undivided Bengal. He was the Advocate General of the East Pakistan and rallied his followers and political friends to abolish the feudal Lord system - - a main source of systematic discrimination and oppression of the poor Muslims and low caste Hindus by elite and high caste Hindu families.
Charles Cornwallis, the East India Company ruler of greater Bengal, leased the country to hundreds of high caste Hindu and several Muslim families in the name of Permanent Settlement in 1793. The idea was to raise as much revenue as possible from the landowners. But effectively these high caste Hindu families became the rulers of Bengal, deciding on behalf of the EIC the future if its people and course of its economy. Most of them were major proponents of casteist society and practiced it as brutally as you still can see in some parts of the subcontinent.
Translation - Bengali জমিদারি প্রথা বিলুপ্তি অবিভক্ত বাংলায় শেরে বাংলা এ কে ফজলুল হকের শ্রেষ্ঠ অবদান। তিনি পূর্ব পাকিস্তানের অ্যাডভোকেট জেনারেল ছিলেন। তিনি তার সমর্থক ও রাজনৈতিক মিত্রদের নিয়ে সামন্তপ্রথার বিলুপ্তির জন্য উঠে পড়ে লেগেছিলেন, যা সেই আমলে দরিদ্র মুসলমান ও নিম্নবর্গীয় হিন্দুদের প্রতি উচ্চবর্ণের হিন্দু পরিবারের বৈষম্য আর নিপীড়নের মূল হাতিয়ার ছিল।
১৭৯৩ সালে ইস্ট ইন্ডিয়া কোম্পানীর প্রতিনিধি ও বৃহত্তর বাংলার শাসক চার্লস কর্নওয়ালিস চিরস্থায়ী বন্দোবস্তের নামে দেশকে শতাধিক উচ্চবর্ণের হিন্দু ও কতিপয় মুসলিম পরিবারের কাছে ইজারা দিয়ে দেন। তার উদ্দেশ্য ছিল এর মাধ্যমে যত বেশি সম্ভব তত বেশি খাজনা আদায় করা। এভাবেই উচ্চবর্ণের হিন্দু পরিবারগুলো বাংলা শাসন করতে থাকে এবং ইস্ট ইন্ডিয়া কোম্পানীর হয়ে বাংলার মানুষের ভবিষ্যত ও বাংলার অর্থনীতি নিয়ন্ত্রন করতে শুরু করে। এদের বেশিরভাগই জাতিবৈষম্যের কট্টর সমর্থক ছিল এবং জাতপাতের নিয়মগুলো মানতে গিয়ে অনেক নির্দয় আচরন করতো, উপমহাদেশের কিছু অংশে যা আজো দেখা যায়।
