Source text - English The characteristics of the flow approaching an intake
structure is one of the most critical considerations for
the designer. When determining direction and distribution
of flow at the entrance to a pump intake structure,
the following must be considered:
• The orientation of the structure relative to the body
of supply liquid
• Whether the structure is recessed from, flush with,
or protrudes beyond the boundaries of the body of
supply liquid
• Strength of currents in the body of supply liquid
perpendicular to the direction of approach to the
pumps
• The number of pumps required and their anticipated
operating combinations
The ideal conditions, and the assumptions upon which
the geometry and dimensions recommended for rectangular
intake structures are based, are that the
structure draws flow so that there are no cross-flows in
the vicinity of the intake structure that create asymmetric
flow patterns approaching any of the pumps, and the structure is oriented so that the supply boundary is
symmetrical with respect to the centerline of the structure.
As a general guide, cross-flow velocities are significant
if they exceed 50% of the pump bay entrance
velocity. Section 9.8.5 provides recommendations for
analyzing departures from this ideal condition based
upon a physical hydraulic model study.
Translation - Spanish Las características del flujo al aproximarse a una estructura de entrada es una de las consideraciones más críticas para el diseñador. Cuando se determina la dirección y distribución del flujo en la entrada de una estructura de entrada de bomba debe tenerse en cuenta lo siguiente:
• la orientación de la estructura relativa al cuerpo del fluido de suministro;
• si la estructura está empotrada, alineada, o sobresale más allá de los límites del cuerpo del fluido de suministro;
• la fuerza de las corrientes del cuerpo del fluido de suministro perpendiculares a la dirección de aproximación a las bombas;
• el número de bombas necesarias y sus combinaciones de funcionamiento esperadas.
Las condiciones ideales, y las conjeturas sobre las que la geometría y dimensiones recomendadas para estructuras de entradas rectangulares se basan, son que la estructura atraiga el flujo de manera que no haya flujos cruzados en las cercanías de la estructura de entrada que cree patrones de flujo asimétricos que se aproximen a cualquiera de las bombas, y la estructura está orientada para que el límite de suministro sea simétrico respecto a la línea central de la estructura. Como guía general, las velocidades de flujo cruzado son significativas si exceden el 50% de la velocidad del ingreso a la bahía de la bomba.
