A tensão sentida pelo jovem enquanto este se esgueirava por entre as prateleiras da biblioteca percorria seus ombros de tal forma que ele podia sentir seus neurônios travarem uma batalha em sua mente. A larga fronte era constantemente entesada com o franzir das finas sobrancelhas, dando a entender que a concentração teimava em fugir e deixar só o pobre rapaz. A respiração ofegante era ainda dificultada pela crônica asma que consigo carregava desde pequenino, a qual era ainda agravada pelo mofo que invadiam suas narinas a cada vez que um antigo livro abria. Precisava escolher rapidamente o próximo volume: o local fechava precisamente às 18 horas, e o velho livreiro já estava às sondas, sempre desconfiado. Desde que vários livros – todos cuidadosamente catalogados – misteriosamente passaram a desaparecer do recinto, qualquer sujeito que escapulisse ao recanto da biblioteca às lentes do livreiro era um tipo lombrosiano. Semelhante fato ocorria diariamente, e já era sabido do velho guarda-volumes que logo antes do almoço a sineta junto à porta anunciaria a chegada do obstinado rapaz. Sempre afobado, o estudante com pouco mais de vinte anos de idade entrava com não pouca discrição, e seus sapatos em couro chamois já desgastados rangiam em desarmonia com o bruto assoalho de carvalho, sugando a atenção de todos no ambiente. Desde a última alteração na lei municipal concernente às regras da biblioteca, o pobre mancebo não poderia pegar mais do que cinco livros, dentre estes sendo apenas um de categoria semi-rara.
Como já havia em sua casa um exemplar da tragédia de Hamlet, achou por bem não levar outra obra do bardo, atendo-se à literatura italiana com Dante. Num lançar d’olhos, avistou a duas estantes de distância a comédia divinamente alocada ao centro da prateleira superior. Era uma edição rara do século dezoito, com quase cem anos de existência. A capa aveludada era de um tom vermelho cádmio, e o título fora impresso em letras clássicas na cor amarelo-ocre dourado. A contracapa continha um belíssimo ex-líbris, trazendo o brasão de Borgonha – e portanto de origem francesa – e um lema em latim rodeava a insígnia:
“Vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas”
Ansiosíssimo com tal achado, imediatamente dirigiu-se àquela estante sem dela tirar a vista, a qual por sua vez era mediada por duas lentes garrafais que corrigiam a sua congênita miopia. Embora fosse não muito baixo, teve dificuldades em mesmo atingir com o dedo médio a brochura da obra, no vão intuito de trazê-lo um pouco à frente dos demais, ainda que jamais ousasse dali derrubá-lo. Num esforço comovedor, pôs-se sobre as pontas dos pés no esmero de alcançar o topo do volume, tensionando ao máximo seu tibial posterior. Passado o apuro na biblioteca, pouco antes de chegar em casa apertou o passo com o receio de que sobre ele desabasse a pardacenta nuvem que repentinamente se avizinhava. Ao entrar, acendeu o candeeiro e, tirando o sobretudo, pôs-se a reunir os livros recém-emprestados em uma prateleira à parte, reservada para os livros obtidos na biblioteca. A única estante da casa era um móvel rústico em peroba rosa, com quatro sólidas prateleiras que inspiravam confiança.
Havia comprado não poucos livros usados desde que ajuntara alguns tostões mediante auxílios prestados à humilde senhora que morava no apartamento ao lado. Esta, de ascendência russa, era peculiarmente gentil e fazia deliciosos bolinhos de pão de ló, os quais não raramente eram oferecidos ao jovem estudante quando ambos se falavam; a pobre senhora Ivânovna era demasiadamente solitária desde que perdera seu marido por estrangulamento do miocárdio. Dois exemplares da Bíblia Sagrada ocupavam apenas um décimo da prateleira inferior – a mais grossa e resistente. O espaço restante era preenchido por comentários e manuais de exegese com distintos pontos de vista e hermenêuticas conflituosas.
A segunda prateleira era dedicada somente à literatura russa. Tolstoi já ocupava mais da metade, mas a real guerra era disputada entre Dostoievski e Pushkin. A existência patente do sofrimento humano decorrente do viver apontava à piedade e à possibilidade da redenção dos pecados. Tal Raskolnikov não precisaria mais carregar tão laborioso fardo. Em contrapartida, o romantismo do poeta ingenuamente pretendia ignorar o suplício humano frente a tão dura terra, mascarando-o de tal forma a maquiar a realidade e sufocá-la pelas paixões terrenas em detrimento da transcendência metafísica, o Uno e o Verbo, o Bem verdadeiro. A terceira continha os livros emprestados da biblioteca, entre os quais Dante nitidamente imperava – todavia, suas dimensões eram exatamente da altura entre duas prateleiras.. O pomposo exemplar aveludado curiosamente subtraía a atenção do ambiente de forma involuntária e despretensiosa, a ponto de poder ser visto mesmo pelos transeuntes, caso a janela guilhotina do quarto estivesse aberta – o que há tempos não ocorria naquela casa. Anelantemente esperei que tão jovem peregrino encontrasse a Beatriz em algum ponto de sua jornada. A quarta e última prateleira, no topo da estante, era destinada aos livros relativos às ciências da práxis, os quais não necessito aqui especificar. Junto a esses, um velho panfleto de afiliação dos Whigs, um pouco amassado e manchado de café.
O novato leitor pretendia escapar do mundo produtivo, pensando assim que estaria mais próximo da causa primeira, do motor imóvel – mal sabia ele que assim vivia a negligenciar toda e qualquer piedade, buscando a solidão e insurgindo-se contra a verdadeira sabedoria. Seu próprio lar há muito já vinha abandonado: o depressivo espelho provençal fixado à parede há tempos não refletia seu dono, e mesmo o rádio, outrora tão estimado, já via suas válvulas serem imobilizadas pela falta de manuseio. O violino, um Gagliano legítimo, há meses permanecia sufocado no estojo em couro herdado de seu avô paterno. O relógio à corda esquecido sobre a mesa já não se lembrava da última vez que fora nutrido, de modo que já não possuía mais forças para movimentar sequer o ponteiro menor. O tempo havia parado na lúgubre residência daquele aspirante a Quixote, que pouco tinha de Dom e muito de Casmurro. Saudosos do calor humano, os lençóis da única cama jaziam intactos, como se ninguém ali vivesse ou dormisse, e de fato não dormia. Ávido pelo conhecimento mas pressionado pelo dever, tal gafanhoto sempre cochilava debruçado sobre os próprios livros, desprezando o aconchego e solicitude da cama acolchoada, sempre preterida aos livros. Com tais janelas cerradas, o quarto carregava um ar denso, pesado e sufocante.
Todos na casa invejavam a pequena estante na qual os livros eram depositados. Todavia, esta já não mais suportava o jugo imposto sobre si, de maneira que seus pregos de uma polegada – peças novas recentemente trocadas na velha estante – já ponderavam em ceder frente a tamanha responsabilidade, afinal não tinham culpa se a ambição do imaturo intelecto impunha sobre eles um fardo maior do que para o qual seu criador os projetara. Chegando junto à mesa, abriu de imediato o raro livro que naquele mesmo dia obtivera. Após alguns minutos lendo o prolongado prefácio do mesmo, acabou adormecendo ali mesmo, debruçado sobre a leitura. Durante aqueles quarenta segundos de cochilo, não se importou em ser sacrílego. Desta maneira, foi incapaz de perceber que a prateleira – momentaneamente sustentada pelo volume que agora jazia em posse do leitor – começava a derrocar, em especial os pregos recém-colocados. O ranger da madeira durou alguns segundos, vencendo o silêncio reinante no ambiente, mas não o pesado sono do rapaz. Antes que pudesse abrir os olhos, sucedeu que as três prateleiras desabaram sobre ele, momento no qual sentiu todos os livros esmagarem a segunda vértebra chamada áxis, corrompendo fatalmente a sua medula espinhal. Após o estrondo, o silêncio tornou ao protagonismo do local, agora desocupado e inerte. Tamanha empreitada desloucada ao conhecimento lançara-o no Hades, donde não sairá tão cedo. Agora além da vida, pode vislumbrar uma realidade inatingível aos mortais, presos à limitude da mente humana, herdeira do pecado original, cativa às necessidades do gênero humano, serva da razão, amante da irracionalidade! O ar do ambiente voltou a ficar leve, como se todas as janelas estivessem abertas.

The tension felt by the young man as he sneaked among the shelves of the library ran through his shoulders in such a way that he could feel his neurons struggling a battle inside his mind. His broad forehead was constantly furrowed with a scowl, suggesting his concentration was stubbornly slipping away and leaving that pity boy alone. His short breathing was further aggravated by the chronic asthma he was carrying with him since he was a child, which was further aggravated by the mould invading his nostrils every time an old book was to be opened. He had to quickly choose the next volume: the place was going to close precisely at 6 PM, and the old bookseller was probing around already, always in a suspicious mind. Ever since many books - all carefully catalogued - mysteriously began to disappear from the shelves, any subject that slipped into some library corner out of the bookseller's sight was a Lombrosian kind.
Such visits used to happen daily, and the old bookkeeper knew that just before the lunchtime the bell at the door would announce the obstinate boy’s arrival. Always eager, that student a bit older than twenty years came in with no little discretion, and his worn chamois leather shoes creaked in disharmony with the rough oak floor, attracting the attention of everyone in the room. Since the last change in the local law regarding libraries regulaments, that poor young man couldn’t take more than five books, and among them only one would be of a semi-rare category.
Since he had already a copy of Hamlet’s tragedy in his house, he thought it best not to take another work from the Bard, instead clinging to the Italian literature with Dante. In a rapid glance, he spotted two shelves away the comedy divinely placed in the center of the top shelf. It was a rare eighteenth century edition, almost one hundred years old. The cover in velvet was of a cadmium red hue, and the title had been printed in classical letters in golden yellow-ochre. The back cover contained a beautiful ex-libris, bearing the Burgundy coat of arms – a original French house- and a Latin motto surrounded by the insignia:
“Vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas”
Desperately anxious about such a find, he immediately went to the bookcase without taking his eyes off the book, which in turn was mediated by two large lenses used to correct his congenital myopia. Although he wasn’t too short, it was difficult for even reaching with his middle finger the booklet, with the vain intention of bringing it a little ahead of the others, although he’d never dare to knock it down. In a moving effort, he stood on his tiptoe to reach the top of the volume, tensing his posterior tibial to the maximum. After the risky situation in the library, just before he got home, he tightened his pace, fearing that the brownish cloud suddenly approaching would fall directly upon him. Upon entering, he lit the lamp and, taking off his overcoat, started gathering the newly borrowed books on a separate shelf reserved for books obtained from the library. He had bought quite a few used books since he’d saved a few pennies by helping the humble lady who lived in the apartment next door. Of russian family, she was kind in a peculiar way and used to make delicious sponge cakes, which were not rarely offered to the young student when they spoke to each other; poor Mrs. Ivânovna was too lonely since she had lost her husband to myocardial strangulation. Two copies of the Holy Bible occupied only a tenth of the bottom shelf - the thickest and resistent. The remaining space was filled with commentaries and exegesis manuals with different points of view of conflicting hermeneutics.
The second shelf was devoted solely to Russian literature. Tolstoy already occupied more than half of it, but the real war was fought between Dostoyevsky and Pushkin. The patent existence of human suffering arising from living aimed to piety and the possibility of the redemption of sins. Such a Raskolnikov would no longer need to carry his laborious burden. On the other hand, the romanticism of the poet naively intended to ignore human suffering on such a harsh earth, masking it in such a way as to mask reality and suffocate it by earthly passions to the detriment of metaphysical transcendence, the One and the Word, the true Good. The third one contained the books borrowed from the library, among which Dante clearly prevailed - however, his dimensions were exactly the height between two shelves. The fourth and last shelf, at the top of the bookshelf, had for books relating to the sciences of praxis, which I need not to specify here. Next to these was an old Whig membership pamphlet, a little crumpled and stained from coffe.
The new reader wanted to escape from the productive world, thinking that he would be closer to the first cause, the immobile engine – he barely knew the path he was living through, neglecting any piety, seeking loneliness, and insurging against true wisdom. His own home had been abandoned since a long time: the depressing Provençal mirror fixed to the wall had long since ceased to reflect its owner, and even the radio, once so cherished, was seeing its own valves become immobilized by the lack of use. The violin, a legitimum Gagliano, for several months had been smothered in the leather case inherited from his grandfather. The winding clock on the table could no longer remember the last time it had been powered, so that it no longer had the strength to move, even the smallest clock hand. Time had stopped in the dreary residence of that aspirant to Quixote, who wasn’t not much like Don and much like Casmurro. Longing for human warmth, the sheets of the only bed lay untouched, as if no one lived or slept there, and in fact they did not. During that forty-second nap, he didn't mind being sacrilegious. A moment after, he was unable to notice that the shelf – previously supported by the volume that the reader had in possession - was beginning to collapse, especially the newly placed nails.
The creaking of the wood lasted a few seconds, overcoming the silence that reigned in the room, but not the boy's heavy sleep. Before he could even open his eyes, three shelves collapsed above him, at which point he felt all the books crushing the second vertebra called the axis, fatally severing his spinal cord. After the crash, silence returned to the protagonism of the place, now unoccupied and inert. Such a sloppy attempt to gain knowledge had thrown him into Hades, from where he would not be leaving any time soon. Now, beyond life, he can glimpse a reality unattainable by mortals, bound to the limitations of the human mind, heir to original sin, captive to the needs of mankind, servant of reason, lover of irrationality. The air in the room became light again, as if all the windows were open.

Source text - English Bad dreams in middle age could be sign of dementia risk, study suggests.
Research finds people who had them at least once a week were four times more likely to experience cognitive decline
People who experience frequent bad dreams in middle age may experience a faster rate of cognitive decline and be at higher risk of dementia as they get older, data suggests.
If confirmed, the research could eventually lead to new ways of screening for dementia and intervention to slow the rate of decline.
Most people experience bad dreams from time to time, but approximately 5% of adults experience nightmares – dreams distressing enough to wake them up – at least once a week. Stress, anxiety, and sleep deprivation are all potential triggers, but previous research in people with Parkinson’s disease has also linked frequent distressing dreams to faster rates of cognitive decline, and an increased risk of developing dementia in the future.
To investigate whether the same might be true of healthy adults, Dr Abidemi Otaiku at the University of Birmingham turned to data from three previous studies that have examined people’s sleep quality and then followed them over many years, assessing their brain health as well as other outcomes. This included more than 600 middle-aged adults (aged 35 to 64), and 2,600 people aged 79 and older.
Their data was analysed using statistical software to find out whether those who experienced a higher frequency of distressing dreams were more likely to go on to experience cognitive decline and be diagnosed with dementia.
The research, published in eClinicalMedicine, found that middle-aged people who experienced bad dreams at least once a week were four times more likely to experience cognitive decline over the following decade than those who rarely had nightmares. Among elderly participants, those who frequently reported distressing dreams were twice as likely to be diagnosed with dementia in subsequent years.
One possibility is that people who have frequent bad dreams have poor quality sleep, which could gradually lead to a buildup of proteins associated with dementia. Another is the existence of some genetic factor that underpins both phenomena.
However, Otaiku’s working hypothesis is that neurodegeneration within the brain’s right frontal lobe makes it harder for people to control their emotions while dreaming, which in turn leads to nightmares. He said: “We know that neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease often start many years before somebody is diagnosed. In some individuals who already have underlying disease, bad dreams and nightmares might be one of the earliest signs.”
He stressed that only a subset of adults who regularly have bad dreams are likely to develop dementia, However, assuming this link is confirmed, bad dreams could eventually be used to identify individuals at high risk.
“The best way to deal with dementia is to prevent it from occurring, and we know that there are several modifiable risk factors – poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, and drinking too much alcohol.” Otaiku said. “If we can identify who’s at high risk for getting dementia several years or even decades earlier, we may be able to slow down the onset, or maybe even prevent it altogether.”
Curiously, the study found that the associations were stronger for men than for women. For example, older men experiencing nightmares on a weekly basis were five times more likely to develop dementia than older men reporting no bad dreams – but in women, the increase in risk was only 41%.
Related to this, previous research has suggested that nightmares are more common among women during youth and middle-age, but that men’s risk of nightmares increases in later life. One possibility is that dementia-linked nightmares are only those that develop during older age, and which men are more predisposed to, Otaiku said.
