Germany plans to withdraw its 1,100 soldiers stationed in Afghanistan by mid-August, the defence minister said on Thursday, after the US and NATO announced plans to leave the country.
"The Bundeswehr is leaving Afghanistan with pride," Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer and Inspector General Eberhard Zorn wrote to soldiers. "Our soldiers have fulfilled all the orders given to them by parliament."
On Wednesday, NATO announced plans to begin withdrawing from Afghanistan by May 1, after US President Joe Biden announced the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan by September 11.
After the US, Germany provides the second-largest contingent of the roughly 10,000 troops stationed there.
Germany's Bundeswehr plans to draw down even more quickly than the US, with plans to clear the camp in the northern area of Mazar-e-Sharif in four months.
The 100 soldiers stationed in the capital Kabul are also to return home by then.

قالت وزيرة الدفاع الألمانية، انيجريت كرامب كارنباور اليوم الخميس، إن ألمانيا تعتزم سحب جنودها الـ 1100 المتمركزين في أفغانستان بحلول منتصف آب/ أغسطس المقبل، وذلك بعد أن أعلنت الولايات المتحدة وحلف شمال الأطلسي (ناتو) عن خططهما لمغادرة البلاد.
وكتبت الوزيرة هي والمفتش العام إيبرهارد زورن إلى الجنود ، إن " قوات الجيش الألماني (البوندسفير) ستغادر أفغانستان بفخر ... لقد نفذ جنودنا كل الأوامر التي كلفهم بها البرلمان".
وأعلن حلف شمال الأطلسي (ناتو) أمس الأربعاء عن خطط للبدء بالانسحاب من أفغانستان بحلول الأول من أيار/مايو المقبل بعد أن أعلن الرئيس الأمريكي جو بايدن عن انسحاب القوات الأمريكية من أفغانستان بحلول 11 ايلول/سبتمبر المقبل.
وبعد الولايات المتحدة، يوجد لألمانيا ثاني أكبر وحدة عسكرية متمركزة هناك وقوامها نحو 10 آلاف جندي.
ويعتزم البوندسفير الألماني سحب قواته بشكل أسرع من الولايات المتحدة، مع خطط لإخلاء المعسكر في منطقة مزار الشريف الواقعة شمالي البلاد في غضون أربعة أشهر.
كما تقرر أن يعود الجنود المئة المتمركزين فى العاصمة كابول إلى بلادهم في نفس التوقيت.
