[Abstract] This research is an empirical study on mother tongue dependence in the English learning process of minority students, targeting middle school students from the Zhuang and Maonan minority groups in Huanjiang, Guangxi. Research discoveries: (1) Among minority students, there is a widespread phenomenon of different mother tongue situations such as minority monolingual mother tongue, Chinese monolingual mother tongue, and minority-Chinese bilingual mother tongue; (2) The concept of mother tongue dependence commonly exists in the English learning process, and the level is relatively high, with the highest level of mother tongue dependence existing in English composition, mother tongue dependence has become a beneficial learning method; (3) Concerning the teachers’ choice of words for teaching, the majority hoped for both Chinese and English to be used, there were very low expectations for the minority language, at the same time, there were no students expecting to use entirely English, and the expectation for mother tongue dependence, particularly Chinese, was far greater than the expectation for minority language dependence. These discoveries can serve as a valuable reference for English teaching in elementary education in ethnic minority regions.
