Source text - English CHAPTER II TERMINOLOGY AND MEANING
The term semantic reaction is fundamental for the present work and non-elemantalistic systesm. The term "semantic" is derived from the Greek semantikos, "significant", form seamainein "to signify", "to mean, and was introduced into literature by Michel Bréal in his Essai de Semantique. The term has been variously used in a more or less general or restricted sense by different writers. Of late, this term has been used by the Polish School of Mathematicians, and particularly L. Chwistek (see Supplement III), A.F Bentley, and has been given a medical application by Herny Head in the study of different forms of Aphasias. "Aphasia, from the Greek aphasia, "speechlessness, is used to describe disorders in comprehension or expressionof written and spoken laguage which result from lesions of the brain. Disturbances of the semantic reactions in connection with faulty education an ignorance must be considered in 1933 as sub-microscopic colloidal lesions.
Among the mani subdivisions of the symbolic disturbances, we find semantic aphasia, to be described (after Head) as the wat of recognition or the full significance or intention of words and phrases, combined with the loss of power of appreciating the "ultimate or non-verbal meaning of words and phrases" to be investigated presently, and the failure to recongnize the intention or goal of actions imposed upon the patient.
The problem of "meaning" are very complex and too little investigated, but it seems that "psychologist" and "philosophers"are not entirely in sympathy with the attitude of the neurologists. It is necessary to show that in a non Aristotelian system, which involves a new theroy of meaning based on non elementalistic, the neurological attitude toward "meaning" is the only structurally correct and most useful one.
The explanation is quite simple. We start with the negative non aristotelian premise that wotrds are not the un-speakable objective leve. such as the actual objects outside of our skin and our personal feelings inside our skin. It follows that the only link between the objective and the verbal world is exclusively structural, necessitating the conclusion that the only content of all "knowledge" is structural. Now structure can be consideres as a complex relations, adn ultimately as multi-dimensionals order.
From thise point of view, all language can be condedered as names either for un-speakable entities on the objective level, be it things or feelings, or as names for relations. In fact, even objects, as such, could be considered as relations between the sub-microscopic events and the human nervous sytem. If we enquire what the last relations represent, we find that an object represents an abstraction of low order produced by our nervous system as the result of the sub-microscopic events acting as stimuli upon the nervous system. If the objects represent abstractions of some order, then, obviously, when we come to the enquiry as to language, we fidn that words are still higher abstractions from objects. Under such conditions, a theory of "meaning" looms up naturally, If the objects, as weel as words, represent abstractions of different order, and individual A, cannot know what B abstracts, unless B tells him, and so the "meanint" of a word must be given by definition. This would lead to the dictionary meanings of words, provided we could define all our words. But this is impossible. If we were to attempt to do so, we should soon find that our vocabulary was exhausted, adn we shluld reach a set of terms which could not be any further defined, from lack of words. We thus see that all linguistic schemes, if analysed far enough, would depend on a set of undefined terms. If we enquire about the "meanint" of a word, we find that it depends on the "meaning" of other words used in defining it, and that the ventual new relations posited between them ultimately depend on the mulitiordianals meanings of the undefined terms, which, at a given period, cannot be elucidated any further.
Naturally, any fundamental theroy of "meaning" cannot avoid this issue, which must be crucial. Here a semantic experiment suggests itself. I have performed this experiment repeatedly on myself and others, invariably with similar results. Imagina that we are engaged in a friendly serious dicussion with some one, and that we decide to enquire into the meanings of words, For this special experiment, it is not necessary to be very exacting, as this would enormously and unncecesarily complicate the experiment. It is useful to a piece of paper and a pencil to keep record of the progress.
We begin by asking the "meaning" of every word uttered, being satisfied for this purpose with the roughest definitions; then we ask the "meaning of the words used in the definitions, and this process is continued usually for no more than ten ot fifteen minutes, until the victim begins to speak in circles- as, fo rinstance, defining "space" by "lenght" and "lenght" by "space". When this stage is reached, we hav ecom usually to the undefined termsof a given individual. If we still press, no matter how gently, for definitions, a most interesting fact occurs. Sooner o later, signs of affective disturbances appear. Ofteh the face reddens; there is a bodily restlessness; sweat appears-symptoms quite similar to those seen ina schoolboy who has forgotten his lesson, which he "knows but cannot tell". If the partner in the experiment is capable of self observation, he invariably finds that he feels an internal affective presure, connected, perahaps, with the rush of blood to the brain and probably best expressed in some such words as "what he "knows" but cannot "tell", or the like. Here we have reached the bottom and the foundations of all non elementalistic meanings-the meanings of undefinded terms, which we "know" somehoy, but cannot tell, In fact, we have reached the un-speakable level. This "knowledge" is supplied by the lower nerve centres; it represents affective first order effects, and is interwoven and interlocked with other affective states, such as those called "wishes", "intentions", "evaluation", and many others. It should be noticed that these first order effects have an objective character, as they are un-speakable-are not words.

El término reacciones semánticas es fundamental en el presente trabajo y para los sistemas no elementalistas. La palabra semántica proviene del griego semánticos, que entre los griegos quería decir: "significado relevante", que a su vez proviene de semainein, que quiere decir, “dar significado” “revelar”, y fue introducido en la literatura por Michel Bréal en su Essai de Sémantique. El término ha sido usado de forma variada un sentido general o restricto por distintos autores. Más recientemente, ha sido usado por la Escuela Polaca de Matemáticas, y particularmente por L. Chwistek (ver Suplemento III), A.F. Bentley1, y se le ha dado una aplicación médica por Henry Head2 en el estudio de las distintas formas de Afasias. “Afasia”, del griego aphasia, “falta de habla”, es usado para describir desórdenes en la comprensión y expresión del lenguaje en forma escrita y hablada que resultan de lesiones en el cerebro. Perturbaciones de las reacciones semánticas en concomitancia con una mala educación y la ignorancia, deben ser consideradas en 1933 como una lesión coloidal submicroscópica.
Entre las muchas subdivisiones de las perturbaciones simbólicas, encontramos a la afasia semántica, ser descrita (después de Head) como la necesidad de reconocimiento o la significancia o intención completa de las palabras o frases, combinada con la pérdida de apreciación de los “significados no verbales de las palabras o frases” a ser investigadas, y la incapacidad de reconocer la intención o el propósito de las acciones impuestas sobre el paciente.
Los problemas del “significado” son muy complejos y muy poco investigados, pero pareciera que los “psicólogos” y los “filósofos” no simpatizan con la actitud de los neurólogos. La explicación es simple. Empezamos con la premisa no aristotelica negativa de que las palabras no son el inexpresable nivel objetivo, tales como los objetos fuera de nuestras pieles y nuestras sensaciones personales dentro de las mismas. Se concluye que el único vínculo entre el mundo objetivo y el verbal es exclusivamente estructural, para lo que se debe concluir antes de que el único contenido de “conocimiento” es estructural. Ahora, la estructura puede ser considerada como una relación compleja, y fundamentalmente, como un orden multidimensional.
Desde este punto de vista, todos los lenguajes pueden ser considerados como nombres, ya sea para entidades inexpresables en el nivel objetivo (cosas o sensaciones), o como nombres para relaciones. De hecho, incluso los objetos, como tales, podrían ser considerados como relaciones entre eventos submicroscópicos y el sistema nervioso humano. Si investigamos lo que representan estas últimas relaciones, encontramos que el objeto representa una abstracción de orden inferior producida por nuestro sistema nervioso como resultado de eventos submicroscópicos actuando como estímulos sobre el sistema nervioso. Si los objetos representan abstracciones de algún orden, entonces, obviamente, cuando examinamos el lenguaje, encontramos que las palabras son abstracciones de orden elevado de los objetos. Bajo tales condiciones, una teoría del “significado” se asoma naturalmente. Si cualquier objeto, así como cualquier palabra, representan abstracciones de distintos órdenes, un individuo A, no puede saber lo que B abstrae, a no ser que B le diga, y así el “significado” de una palabra debe ser dado por una definición. Esto nos llevaría al diccionario con sus definiciones de las palabras, y así podríamos definir y buscar todas nuestras palabras. Pero esto es imposible. Si lo intentáramos, descubriríamos que nuestro vocabulario ha sido agotado, y llegaríamos a un conjunto de términos que no podrían ser definidos, por la falta de palabras. Vemos entonces, que todos los esquemas lingüísticos, si, analizados en profundidad, dependen de un conjunto de términos no definidos. Si examinamos el “significado” de una palabra, encontramos que esta depende del significado de otras palabras usadas para definirá, y que estas nuevas relaciones que surgen entre ellas, dependen de los significados de los términos no definidos, que, en el periodo dado, no pueden dilucidarse más.
Naturalmente, cualquier teoría fundamental del “significado” no puede evitar este asunto, que debe ser crucial. Aquí un experimento semántico se auto-sugiere. He realizado este experimento repetidas veces en mi mismo y en otros, con resultados muy similares. Imagine que estamos en una discusión amigable con alguien, y que decidimos investigar el significado de las palabras. Para este experimento, no es necesario ser muy exigente ya que complicaría las cosas innecesariamente. Es útil tener a mano papel y lápiz para registrar el progreso.
Empezamos preguntando el significado de cualquiera de las palabras dichas durante la discusión. La definición más amplia es satisfactoria para que quedemos satisfechos. Entonces, preguntamos el significado de las palabras usadas para definir la primera palabra, y así sucesivamente por quince minutos hasta que la víctima comienza a explicar en círculos como por ejemplo definiendo “espacio” con el término “longitud” y “longitud” con “espacio”. Cuando se llega a esta etapa, hemos llegado a los términos indefinidos del individuo. Si seguimos presionando por más definiciones, sin importar que tan gentilmente lo hagamos, un hecho más interesante ocurre. Tarde o temprano, signos de perturbación afectiva comienzan a presentarse en la persona. La cara se vuelve roja, hay agitación en el cuerpo, sudor; síntomas similares a los que se observa en un escolar que ha olvidado su lección, que él “sabe pero que no puede expresar”. Si el compañero en el experimento es capaz de autoevaluarse, encontrará invariablemente que siente una presión afectiva interna, conectada quizás, con la circulación de sangre hacia el cerebro y probablemente, mejor expresada en tales palabras como “lo que él `sabe´ pero no puede expresar” o algo similar. Aquí hemos alcanzado el fondo y la base de todos los significados no elementalistas, es decir, significados con términos no definidos, que sabemos, pero de alguna manera no podemos expresar. De hecho, hemos alcanzado el nivel inexpresable. Este “conocimiento” es dado por los centros más bajos de los nervios; que representa efectos afectivos de primer orden, y está entretejido y entrelazado con otros estados afectivos, tales como aquellos llamados “deseos”, “intenciones”, “intuiciones”, “evaluación”, y muchos más. Debe notarse que estos efectos de primer orden tienen un carácter objetivo, ya que son inexpresables, es decir, no son palabras.
