返事をするのに時間はかからなかった。青豆は首を振った。「とくに怖くありません。私が私として生きていることに比べれば」
老婦人ははかない笑みを口元に浮かべた。老婦人はさっきよりいくらか若返って見えた。唇にも生気が戻っていた。青豆との会話が彼女を刺激したのかもしれない。あるいは少量のシェリー酒が効果を発揮したのかもしれない。
「でもあなたには好きな男の人が一人いたはずですね」
「はい。しかし私がその人と現実に結ばれる可能性は、限りなくゼロに近いものです。ですからここで私が死んだとしても、それによって失われるのもまた、限りなくゼロに近いものでしかありません」
老婦人は目を細めた。「その男の人と結ばれることはないだろうとあなたが考える、具体的な理由はあるのですか？」
「とくにありません」と青豆は言った。「私が私であるという以外には」
Translation - English “I’d like you to answer this truthfully,” the dowager said. “Are you afraid to die?”
Aomame wasted no time in answering as she shook her head. “Not particularly. It can’t be worse than living.” The dowager cracked a smile. It brought out her youthfulness. Some vitality returned to her lips. Perhaps she just enjoyed talking to Aomame that much. Or perhaps it was just the sherry.
“There must be a man you’re interested in, correct?”
“Sure. But the chances of us really getting together are slim-to-none. So if I die, it wouldn’t matter—I never had a chance in the first place.”
The dowager squinted at her. “Any specific reason you can’t be with him?”
“Not really,” said Aomame. “It’s just who I am.”

Source text - Japanese 走ることが、こんな形で役立つとは思ってもいなかった。
ゴムの靴底が硬いアスファルトを弾く。その感触を味わいながら、蔵原走は声もなく笑った。
足先から伝わる衝撃を、全身の筋肉がしなやかに受け流す。耳もとで風が鳴っている。皮膚のすぐ下が熱い。なにも考えなくても、走の心臓は血液を巡らせ、肺は乱れなく酸素を取りこむ。体はどんどん軽くなっていく。どこまでだって走っていける。
だが、どこまで？ なんのために？
そこで走はようやく、いま自分が走っている原因に思い当たり、少し速度をゆるめた。耳を澄ませて、背後の気配を探ってみる。怒声も足音ももう聞こえない。右手にはがさがさと音を立てる菓子パンの袋がある。証拠隠滅とばかりに、走は袋の口を開け、走りながらパンをむさぼった。食べ終わったあとの袋をどうするかしばらく悩み、着ていたパーカーのポケットにつっこむ。
空き袋を持っていたら、それを盗んだことのなによりの証拠になってしまう。それでも、ゴミを道ばたに捨てることはできなかった。おかしなものだな、と走は思う。
Translation - English He never thought running could feel this good.
The soles of his shoes struck the hard asphalt. Without making a sound, Kakeru Kurahara savored the feeling of his shoes against the ground and smiled.
The impact started at his feet before dissipating through his body. The wind echoed in his ear. His skin felt hot. His thoughts stopped. His heart started racing. He breathed faster, needing more oxygen. He started to feel lightheaded. How far had he run?
To where? And why?
Remembering why he started running, he slowed his pace. He listened for any sign of someone behind him. He could not hear any footsteps or angry voices anymore. The bag of sweet bread rustled in his right hand. Thinking that destroying the evidence would be a good idea, Kakeru opened the bag and devoured the bread. He thought for a moment about what to do with the bag before stuffing it in the pocket of his sweatshirt.
Of course, the bag itself was the most damning piece of evidence. But there was nowhere along the road to throw it away. Ridiculous, Kakeru thought.

Source text - Japanese その昔、東京都・埼玉県・神奈川県東部というところが一体となって出来ていた大国があった。「武蔵国」である。時は１８７１年。廃藩置県により広大な武蔵国から重要都市であった東京が独立。そして同じく幕末の開港以来重要都市となっていた横浜も武蔵国南部と相模国を引き連れて独立を果たし、現在の神奈川県となった。まあ、簡単に言えば良いとこ取りされ切り捨てられた余りもので出来た海なし県。それが現在の埼玉県というところである。
Translation - English Long ago, the lands of Tokyo, Saitama, and East Kanagawa were united under the single banner of Musashi. The year is 1871. The feudal domains of old have been abolished and the sprawling metropolis of Tokyo has gained independence. Following the reopening of international trade, the burgeoning city of Yokohama, along with southern Musashi and Sagaimi formed modern Kanagawa prefecture. From the sparse, land-locked territories that remained, came what is today known as Saitama prefecture.
