Source text - English The Republic of Armenia is located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, in southern Caucasus. Armenia has borders with Georgia to the north, with Turkey to the west and south, with Azerbaijan to the east and southwest, and with Iran to the south. The overall territory of Armenia is 29.743 sq km. It is divided into 10 regions and the capital of Armenia, Yerevan.
The country was also part of the former Soviet Union, being the smallest country in it. The country gained back its independence in 21.09.1991, which is considered Armenia’s independence referendum day. This day is accepted as a national holiday. Armenia is a presidential republic.
Armenian economy has undergone a profound transformation since independence. The economic growth and other factors became the reason of creating market-oriented environment. Of course the global financial crisis had a huge impact on Armenian economic system. It effected crucially on rural and urban poverty. Today Armenia is an industrial-agrarian country. The population of Armenia is around 3 million. It mainly consists of Armenians (96%), but there are other small ethnic grupes which are Russians, Yezidis, Kurds, Assyrians, Greeks, Ukrainians, Jews and others. Two third of the population lives in urban areas, while the other part lives in rural parts of the country. The capital, Yerevan, which is the most rapidly developing part of Armenia, is populated with over a million people. Armenians are such a nation that despite merging with other nations and partially accepting their culture, they preserve and protect Armenian cultural, historical, religious customs and traditions .
