1852- Εκδίδεται το βιβλίο "Uncle Tom's Cabin", της Harriet Beecher Stowe. Το βιβλίο αυτό είχε σημαντική επίδραση στον τρόπο που έβλεπαν το ζήτημα της σκλαβιάς οι Αμερικάνοι, καθώς περιέγραφε για πρώτη φορά τη σκληρή ζωή των σκλάβων, από τη δική τους οπτική γωνία. Ήταν τέτοια η σημασία του που αναδείχθηκε στο πιο πολυδιαβασμένο βιβλίο του 19ου αιώνα στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες, ενώ αμέσως μετά την έκδοσή του προέκυψαν πολλά βιβλία ανθρώπων που τάσσονταν υπέρ της δουλείας, που προσπάθησαν να ανατρέψουν την εικόνα του Νότου που είχε διαμορφωθεί από το βιβλίο της η Stowe. | Translation - English
1852- Harriet Beecher Stowe's “Uncle Tom's Cabin” comes out. The novel drastically changed the way the Americans viewed slavery as it described, for the first time, the hardships of being a slave from their own point of view. The book's influence was so vast that it was the best-selling novel of the 19th century in the USA. Right after the novel came out, many advocates of slavery brought out their own books, in an attempt to overturn Stowe's vision and depiction of the South. |
