PRESS RELEASE by NGO Sarhad, Pune
HEAD: New chapter in Maharashtra-W Bengal friendship to begin during death centenary year of Lokmanya Tilak
STRAP: Programmes to mark 150th birth anniversary of Yogi Sri Aurobindo Ghosh and birth centenary year of Satyajit Ray
Pune, June 22:
Punjab, Bengal and Maharashtra had played an important role during the Freedom Struggle. The historical ties among these states were strengthened by the trinity: Lal (Lala Lajpat Rai), Bal (Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak) and Pal (Bipin Chandra Pal).
Though the Maharashtra-Punjab relations grew considerably, the Maharashtra-Bengal relations could not develop further after Independence. Rabindranath Tagore, Yogi Sri Aurobindo Ghosh, Subhas Chandra Bose and Swami Vivekananda had strong bonds with the people of Maharashtra. Satyendranath Tagore while serving as the district collector in Maharashtra had translated Tukaram’s ‘abhangs’ (spiritual verses) and Lokmanya Tilak’s ‘Gitarahasya’ into Bengali.
To revive these ties, city-based NGO Sarhad has decided to start a new chapter in the Maharashtra-Bengal friendship to mark the death centenary of Lokmanya Tilak (August 1, 1920 – 2020). In fact there are more than one occasion to strengthen the ties between these two states. The birth centenary of renowned filmmaker Satyaji Ray and the 150th birth anniversary of Yogi Sri Aurobindo Ghosh are being celebrated this year.
Giving details about the programmes to be organised throughout the year ahead, Sarhad Founder-President Sanjay Nahar said, “We will focus on people-to-people contacts in the fields of language, literature, arts, theatre, films, education and culture. A people’s movement would be launched by organising various programmes in the two states.”
In a statement released by Sarhad, Nahar said, “We have established contacts with the descendants of the trinity ‘Lal-Bal-Pal’, who represent these bonds, and writers, poets, leaders and artists from these states. We have decided to translate around 50 books from Punjabi, Bengali and Marathi.”
“The programmes will be inaugurated on August 1 through videoconferencing in the presence of the chief ministers of the three states, namely - Mamata Banerjee, Capt Amarinder Singh, Uddhav Thackery, NCP President Sharad Pawar and the descendants of Lala Lajpat Rai, Lokmanya Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal, namely Adv Anil Agarwal, Shailesh and Dr Dipak Tilak and Deep Pal, respectively. The descendants of the three freedom fighters will also participate in various programmes during the period,” he said.
A special programme will take place on the occasion of India’s victory over Pakistan and the freedom of Bangladesh, which is completing 50 years on December 16, 2021.
The events will be launched on August 1, 2020 and will go on till August 15, 2022 marking the 150th birth anniversary of Yogi Sri Aurobindo Ghosh.
