Sometimes the scariest moments in games don't come from the horror genre, emerging from much stranger places instead.
Below, you'll find a rundown of the games we didn't expect to find scary, but did anyway, because we are so very afraid.
Expect a mix of existential dread, dolphins, truck driving, vampirism, and lost Kerbals.
American Truck Simulator
In games, 'night' usually just means the sky turns a darker shade of blue.
But in American Truck Simulator the desert roads are plunged into total darkness.
Highways are well lit, but the backroads of Arizona and Nevada are dark and isolated, and all you can see is the glow of your headlights in front of you.
It doesn't happen often, but sometimes when I'm out there in the wilderness, surrounded by that black void, I feel a bit on edge.
I remember during one particularly long haul being genuinely scared by a tumbleweed rolling suddenly across the road.
Who knew a truck simulator could be so unnerving.

Everything
On the surface this philosophical adventure... thing seems quite harmlessly weird.
You roam around strange, colourful environments inhabiting various forms—a beetle, a tree, a molecule, a planet—and listen to serene clips of philosopher Alan Watts talking about the nature of existence.
But then you start getting into conversations with the things around you and things get dark.
"The world will end in the year you die," a blade of grass told me, filling me with existential dread.
“This is Hell,” said a milk carton.
“Real actual Hell.”
Then a loaf of bread told me it was depressed.
It's just too much.

EVE Online
I rarely venture into those systems in EVE Online where other players can attack you without immediate repercussions from the space cops, but the first time I did it was utterly terrifying.
A friend and I went to a lowsec asteroid belt to mine some ore, aware that these are often the hunting grounds of players looking for clueless people to rob.
And, of course, after about ten minutes of mining someone in a much bigger ship warped in and started shooting at us.
The ensuing panicky flight back to a safer system had my heart racing more than any horror game.
I haven’t returned to lowsec since, and I never will.

Ecco the Dolphin
When I was a kid, my parents took me to a local game shop where you could try the second-hand games before buying.
I gave Altered Beast a go, and my dad said it was too adult for me, so I had to pick something else.
What could be terrifying about a kiddie dolphin game, though?

That's how I ended up with Ecco, a deeply scarring and overly difficult game that features killer sharks, strangely-animated dinosaurs, creepy octopuses and a hellish finale against a disembodied alien head that rattles when you hit it with a sonar blast (see above).
And don't get me started on the opening moments, where the contents of the ocean are sucked into strobe light-flashing sky.

Dark Forces
There's an enemy in the third level of Dark Forces that I absolutely despise: the Dianoga, Star Wars' squid aliens of A New Hope fame, and this is an entire level of being ambushed by them in a dark sewer.
In the days before we had the internet, my dad got stuck on this level for years and years.
It's such a complicated environment to unpick—having to light the place up with laser fire, only to see a squid monster emerge out of brown goop (space poop, I guess), is surprisingly disturbing.
I finally beat the level four years ago, and I'm never going back.

Final Fantasy 8
Ordinarily, the only thing that's scary about Final Fantasy games is the occasional nightmare laughing scene.
In Final Fantasy 8's secret Deep Sea Research Center, though, the game attempts to go for more of a mysterious horror vibe.
You go deeper and deeper into this abandoned facility, and it culminates in a fight first with the dragon Bahamut, then with Ultima Weapon, one of the hardest bosses in the game (it's still not that tough to kill, though, admittedly).
Check out the opening minute above.
It's some spooky, 2001-style weirdness.
Another section earlier in the game has you entering a tomb where a student died as his friends flee the place, which is similarly unsettling.

Kerbal Space Program
It’s all fun and games when my rockets are exploding on take off or spiralling into the ocean, but the moment I leave the atmosphere and I’m suddenly lost in the vastness of space I feel a cold dread.
It’s too quiet up there, and I have the feeling that the slightest error will lead to unrecoverable disaster.
Exploding seems fine, I’m more terrified of the idea of my rocket veering off into the darkest corners of the universe with my Kerbals inside, dying slowly in perhaps the loneliest way possible.

The Battlefield 3 beta
I find it unsettling whenever this happens in a game, but falling through the floor in Battlefield 3’s beta was particularly disturbing because I could still hear the sounds of other players having fun above me even as I sank into the grey blank underworld.
If I died and became a ghost I imagine it would be a bit like this.
I can see the warped geometry of the underside of the level, I can see the players, but I can never interact with anyone.
Falling through the level reveals the fakery of virtual scenery in a way that can make the whole endeavour of building these fake places seem a bit sad.
Ho hum.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Wes was spooked by becoming a vampire, but is anything scarier than the faces in Oblivion?
About a week into playing Oblivion, I woke up in a roadside inn to find my skin unusually pale and my face unusually haggard.
Sunlight hurt my eyes, and I became stronger when night fell.
In my sleep, it turns out, I'd been bitten by a vampire, and I had absolutely no idea what to do about it.
After awhile I stumbled upon a quest that helped me cure my vampirism, but for awhile I was venturing in completely unknown territory, and when I finally managed to get rid of my curse, I remember it seemed like a one-off solution, a quest I couldn't replicate if I was bitten again.
I did not want that, after spending full days only venturing out at night, and sneaking up on people to feed on their blood.
So a few weeks later, when I stumbled into a cave filled with an entire band of high-level, outlaw vampires, well, I was scared shitless.
I spent the entire fight terrified one of them would bite me and turn me into a vampire again, so I kept running backwards, flinging fireball spells at them until I eventually took them all down.
Never again, vampires.
Never again.

Final Fantasy 15
Being attacked by these things at night is Not Good.
You'd think the only thing scary in a game about four bros going on a prolonged car ride together would be the smell of their collective BO, but Final Fantasy 15 has some surprisingly spooky encounters tucked into its out of the way dungeons.
Early on, for example, Noctis and friends enter an abandoned mine where lights flicker on and off and doors slam shut unexpectedly.
It's all rather cliche, but FF15 manages to sell the tension of that moment surprisingly well—or that's just how I'm choosing to justify how often these dungeon crawls scared the shit out of me.
Just about every single one of them had moments where I outright jumped in surprise when a group of enemies ambushed my party.
It was all just a little too tense and atmospheric for me.
More than once, I had to pause before the entrance of a dungeon and take a deep breath and remind myself that, uh, Final Fantasy 15 isn't a horror game.

Source text - English Want to take a crack at making your own 2D game? These are the best tools for the job, even if you're a beginner.
Making games is hard. The more you know about the process, the more miraculous it seems that games get made at all. As former PC Gamer writer Tom Francis described programming when he was making Gunpoint: "The most useful way I've found to think of it is this: Your game is fucking insane. It is a mental patient. It has completely lost its mind, and to make it behave in any kind of reasonable way, you have to be expecting every sensible instruction to be met with screaming, preposterous bullshit."
While it's easy to feel paralyzed by the thought of learning to design and program your own game, we asked quite a few indie devs for their advice and they all offered the same advice for beginners: just do it. Jump in, no matter how scary it is. To help you take that first exhilarating (and inevitably frustrating—but also, probably, rewarding!) dive into game development, we've devised this handy list of 2D game engines for developers who are still new to programming. Paired with developer recommendations, hopefully this will serve as the push you need to get started.
GameMaker Studio 2
Price and License: $100 for permanent desktop license; Free trial available
Best for: Short-format 2D platformers and RPGs; cross-platform games
Notable games: Nidhogg, Hyper Light Drifter, Undertale, Risk of Rain
GameMaker Studio 2 is your one stop destination if you want to get into game development. The platform allows creators to use the tool's easy-to-learn drag-and-drop interface, or work hands-on with the engine's own scripting language, GML. We talked to several developers who've made popular games in GameMaker, who shared their own experiences with the tool.
The Pros
Mark Essen, creator of Nidhogg and Nidhogg 2, says GameMaker is great for beginners because scripting is pretty open-ended, and Yoyo Games has a wealth of tutorials and guides to help folks get set up quickly. A marketplace also offers add-ons to customize the engine to build a platformer or top-down RPG.
Alx Preston, the mind behind Hyper Light Drifter, says that the GameMaker community is a huge asset. He notes that young developers should be "...learning the best places to get support in the community and the best tricks to use for the engine to achieve what you want—usually by going to the community as a resource."
The Cons
Of course, you might not be making a Steam-ready game right off the bat. "Because GameMaker is so forgiving with its code, projects can get messy very quickly," Essen says. "I like that in the beginning stages of a project you can iterate quickly and focus on the game design, but down the line this will bite you in the butt if you don't maintain some personal organizational standards!"
Duncan Drummond, the creator of beloved roguelike Risk of Rain, also noted that GameMaker's ease of use can come back to haunt developers. "It's very easy and fast to develop, but does come at a performance cost if done incorrectly," he says. Drummond also noted that GameMaker doesn't translate to any other engines, so if you're looking to make the jump to Unity or another engine down the line, this might not be the tool for you.

Unity

Unity is one of the main platforms for popular indie games, and while it has impressive 3D capabilities, there are dozens of fantastic 2D games built in the engine, too. Unity has more of a learning curve than the other engines on this list, but with a huge community and bountiful tutorials, there are more than enough resources out there to get you off to a solid start.
Unity's asset store also includes a wealth of add-ons that customize the engine for 2D development. There's Unity's free 2D Platformer asset, and tools like Corgi Engine and Rex Engine, which offer platforming physics, controls and abilities out of the box.
We spoke to both inkle's Joseph Humfrey and Asymmetric Publications' Victor Thompson about jumping into Unity as a new programmer.
The Pros
Thompson may have been used to making games the old-fashioned way, but has quickly grown to be a fan of Unity, the engine he used to create the team's latest game, West of Loathing. "After 2-3 years of using it full time, the most exciting thing for me is how quickly you can put together concepts and prototypes," he says. "Despite having used many engines, both small and simple for personal projects as well as big and complex in the AAA industry, Unity is by far the best designed engine I've ever used, and allows me to be the most productive I've ever been."
The Cons
However, there are some limitations when using a single platform for all of your development needs. If you encounter a bug in Unity, you're often at the mercy of the engine's designers to fix the problem, which can involve some waiting. "Despite publicly saying that they've put bug fixing at the top of their list of priorities, we still find editor and debugger stability a big problem at inkle," Humfrey says.
Beginner's Advice
"Whatever it is you want to do, try to shape it in your head as a thing you want to make, rather than a skill you want to have. It's useful and rewarding to know how to do things, but in the long term I think people get more out of setting a goal, learning the things that they need in order to achieve that goal, and then reaching the goal." — Victor Thompson, West of Loathing
Ren'Py
Price and License: Free
Best for: 2D Visual Novels, Simulation
Compatible with: Python
Notable games: Long Live the Queen, Analogue: A Hate Story
Ren’Py is an easy-to-learn open source engine. While the tool does require some programming, you really only need to know how to use a text-editor and photo editing software to get started. It’s a useful gateway to Python for newcomers.
Here’s what Georgina Bensley, creator of Long Live the Queen, had to say about Ren’py.
The Pros
"Ren'Py is open source and cross-platform, which opens up a broad range of opportunities for dedicated users," Bensley says. "I also consider it a plus that it is beginner-friendly but still requires looking at and editing script files, rather than a graphical drag-and-drop interface, because I think it's useful to get people over that hurdle of thinking that code is scary."
Ren’Py is also a good tool if you feel overwhelmed by the sheer prospect of building a game from scratch:
"One of the biggest roadblocks faced by people who've never made any sort of game before is simply the belief that coding is 'too complicated' and not something that they would be able to do. Being able to get a simple game up and running quickly helps get new developers over that hurdle, even if visual novels are not something they intend to make in the future. Once you've made something that other people can play, even something simple, it can change the way you feel about yourself and your ability to do things."
The Cons
Ren’Py is a bit limited in support for graphical and mechanical features. If you’re looking to create games with 3D, Live2D, collision detection and other bells and whistles, you might want to look elsewhere before getting started.
Beginner’s Advice
"Don't be afraid to try, it's easier to get started than you think. Don't be afraid to ask for help, there are a lot of other people out there who have been where you are and can offer tips, or who are looking for projects themselves and might want to join you. Don't assume that something is impossible until you've at least talked about it."
ink
Price and License: Free
Best for: Text-based adventure games
Compatible with: Unity, C#, HTML
Notable games: 80 Days, Sorcery!
ink is a good, free supplement to Unity if you're seeking an easy way to write branching dialogue and narratives. It's easy to learn, using markup instead of script, and it integrates with Unity smoothly thanks to the engine's built-in integration. ink was built as "middleware," according to inkle's Art and Code Director Joseph Humfrey—after writing an ink script, it's expected you'll plug it into a larger game within Unity. However, developers are also welcome to use the Inky Editor to export a game to the web.
The Pros
Writing extensive narrative with branching paths can get messy, so ink is an excellent tool to ensure you don't get lost along the way. "This allows writers to use Inky to write their dialogue and narrative text in a format that's a lightweight interactive markup," Humfrey says. "The ink engine running within Unity can then read these scripts, and produce text that can be presented by the game."
Its open nature also comes in handy when creating more ambitious projects. Humfrey notes, "The text that's produced by the ink engine doesn't even necessarily need to be presented literally. For example, in Heaven's Vault, the ink engine produces a dynamic film script that's interpreted by the game and presented more like an interactive graphic novel or adventure game."
ink also happens to be a great tool for people who are more interested in writing stories for games, as opposed to pure programming. "...There are increasingly a lot of interactive writers who have been using ink," Humfrey adds. "Where The Water Tastes Like Wine is a game by one of the makers of Gone Home and is using ink. It has a large team of well known writers including Leigh Alexander, Emily Short and Cara Ellison. So increasingly, if you're a writer interested in game development, ink could be a good way to get started."
The Cons
ink is best used to complement games made within Unity, rather than as a standalone engine. Humfrey says, "ink isn't an alternative to Unity—it's complementary. In fact, ink is one of the only interactive fiction authoring languages that was specifically designed as middleware."
Beginner's Advice
"The most common advice is that you should make a demo game, and I still believe that to be best advice. For artists, make sure you've got an awesome portfolio that shows what you're good at, and hides what you're not good at—only show your best stuff. So, get out there and make stuff!"

Source text - English Cowardice, I have learned in my many years of being a video game coward, comes in many forms.
Games often try to scare players, and I’m usually as spooked as anybody else.
The greatest dread of all, though, emerges from that potent cocktail of fear and embarrassment from those moments I go ghost-white over something that couldn’t harm a hair on my precious little head.
It’s happened to me more times than I care to admit, so on this, the most hallowed of weens, I’ve decided to share my least frightening, most embarrassing scares with you.
BioShock—The Circus Of Values
You’re walking down a dank, dripping corridor.
You haven’t seen a soul in over a full minute.
The only sounds you hear are the metallic creaks and groans of Rapture itself.
A respite.
You take a deep breath and let your shoulders slacken.
Then:
“WELCOME TO THE CIRCUS OF VAAAAAAALUES.”
If you’re me, this is the point at which you leap out of your skin and then realize that it was just a vending machine.
Again.
Doom 3—A Ladder
A handful of years ago, I found myself in a hotel room at QuakeCon trying out a prototype VR headset for the first time.
I was playing a VR-retrofitted version of Doom 3—you know, the one that actively tried to be spooky, scary, and poorly lit.
I’d just dissipated a noxious cloud of Cacodemons when I came upon a ladder.
Clearly, the only way forward was up, so I climbed.
When I reached the top of the ladder, however, I discovered something I wasn’t prepared for.
Vertigo.
This was my first time ever trying VR, and my real-life fear of heights suddenly kicked in.
I became acutely afraid of losing my footing and falling down the ladder.
Seconds later, more Cacodemons rushed me, and I yelped in terror because—in my rush to back away from them—I’d moved my real-life body to where my brain thought the ladder was.
For a split second, I really believed I would fall.
Oh, did I mention that id Software co-founder and tech guru John Carmack was in the room, silently observing?
Because he was.
So yeah, I probably seemed really cool to him.
Assassin’s Creed II—QTEs
Plenty of games have taught me to watch cutscenes on the edge of my seat, waiting for a random “miss it and you die” button press, but Assassin’s Creed II did it in such a devious way that I’m now pathologically prepared for these things.
I speak, of course, of the dreaded quick time event in which Leonardo da Vinci reaches out to give main character Ezio a friendly hug, and you can just straight up leave him hanging in what might be the single least “bro” moment in history.
I’ve developed an irrational fear that other games will cause me to similarly disappoint my in-game BFFs, to the point that I never fully take my hands off my controller, no matter how long the cutscene.
You never know who might need a hug, and I know for damn sure that when they do, I’ll be there with open (and suspiciously fast) arms.
Tomb Raider (2013)—Death
OK, so this is kind of a weird one because, you know, death should be frightening.
But in Tomb Raider, I wasn’t afraid of the looming specter of death itself.
Rather, I was afraid of making mistakes that triggered traumatizingly gruesome death scenes as epitomized by the bit where Lara goes careening down screaming-fast rapids and gets impaled—NECK FIRST—on a wooden beam.
Then the camera just lingers on her for a couple seconds as she hysterically grasps at the multi-foot stake now protruding from her body before mercifully choking out one final breath.
You’d better believe I played the rest of the game as cautiously as humanly possible after that.
Spider: Rite of the Shrouded Moon—Myself
Both Spider: Rite of the Shrouded Moon and its predecessor, Spider: Secret of Bryce Manor, are fantastic, sadly underrated games.
They’re marvels of both environmental storytelling and economy of design.
If you haven’t played them yet, you absolutely should.
But also, you play as a spider.
A spider.
Nope.
Red Dead Redemption 2—Everything
I’m pretty sure this fear actually began with Deus Ex: Human Revolution when a bunch of hostages got killed because I screwed around in the game’s opening area for too long.
Now it extends to all games that are full of mysterious, interlocking systems.
Especially when I start these sorts of games, I dutifully do everything everybody tells me for fear of fucking something up or letting people down in a way I didn’t see coming.
Last night, for example, I started Red Dead Redemption 2 by cursing and sweating up a storm through multiple gunfights because—for some reason—I got it into my head that I should be worried about the possibility of my cowboy compatriots permanently biting the big one if I got too sloppy.
Why?
Big, hyper-intricate games have done it to me before!
This has never really been a thing in Rockstar games, specifically, but nobody ever said fear was rational.
All Video Games—Fireplaces
Speaking of irrationality, it’s infuriating to watch me play video games, because I will take the most inconvenient, circuitous routes possible in order to stay at least 20 feet away from fireplaces and campfires.
In most games, they’re harmless or only slightly damage you, but sometimes you catch on fire, and your character starts screaming, and it’s a whole thing.
I hate that!
Call me a giant, phobia-ridden baby if you want, but at least this giant, phobia-ridden baby won’t die in a fire.
