Source text - French Un visage d’enfant, immobile, bleu-nuit, sur lequel viennent mourir les dernières lumières rescapées du jour. Un visage d’enfant, sans sourire, on ne sourit pas lorsque la vie est en déroute, lorsque s’échappe le cœur avec une énergie furibonde et que l’on n’entend pas la musique des heures. Un visage d’enfant qui réunit les plus graves loyautés, malgré son silence, malgré la pâleur de ses traits, la fragilité d’une bouche qui tremble, la transparence d’une main posée sur les draps. Il dort, mais ce n’est pas le sommeil du repos, l’instant de paix où le corps se régénère. C’est un sommeil qui ressemble à s’y méprendre, à un évanouissement. La douceur n’y est qu’un masque, recouvrant le tumulte des nuits, interminables passées au chevet de l’enfant, l’interlude des jours qui s’estompent avant même qu’on les ont vécu. Un frémissement, imperceptible comme un battement de seconde mais que l’œil vigilant de la mère surprend sans erreur. Je m’approche de lui, mon visage a peine a quelque millimètre du sien. Je recois le souffle qui s’échappe a peine a contrecœur de ses lèvres avec ce parfum d’amertume que donne la fièvre. Je me tends vers lui pour tenter de saisir, dans l’invisible vibration du corps, une certitude de vie. Désirant le rassembler et le ramener vers moi, plus loin. La ou il aurait été farouchement protégé, sans les médicaments, les comprimes et les piqures qui ont vidés son corps et massacré sa chair. Il y a un tel silence autour de nous que tous se fond, tout disparait. Un monde en transparence nous enveloppe, ou s’agite des marées ondulantes et muettes. A child’s face, which reflects the greatest of honesty, despite the silence, despite the pallor of his features, the frailty of a trembling mouth, the translucent hand lying on the sheet. He sleeps but it is not a restful sleep, the time of peace when the body is restored. It is a slumber which could be mistaken for a faint. The softness is only a mask, veiling the rough, endless nights spent at the bedside of the child, the interlude of days fading even before having been fully spent. A tremor. Where does my warrior-like courage come from? I should not have given birth to him, should not have delivered him to the unknown dangers of this world full of the living. Right now, the doctors dismiss me as being something redundant, a remnant of motherhood that has wrongly fulfilled its mission. The father scolds me for the tears that flow too easily, too freely and too painfully at the same time, another release and another confinement. And nobody understands the welding that connects us, the strange resources springing from such loyalty and to what extent this child is still me, how much he is still me. A hand took hold of my arm and dragged me out of the room. I am lost outside of it. Nothing lives in the house anymore, except the room where my child sleeps. The other rooms have become unfamiliar to me, cold and cloaked in a veil of decay, as if dusted with weariness. They could have been turned to stone by a charm, a curse whose origin I do not want to discover, they could have been buried under a pile of brambles and spine for all I care. Life has been reduced to shreds mixed with strange pains. All the things which had seemed so important in everyday life have disappeared. I forgot which labyrinth I took to get here. In this dark place where forgotten smells are mingled, where a clammy mould slowly creeps onto the walls and partitions like tresses of the night, faces hanging here and there, mute, colorless, emptied of all sense and ambition. It is me, it is Dev, and other spirits which refuse to go away but are nevertheless hollow, traps which I stop myself from facing up to. There were lines of laughter here and there, echoes of a dream. To me, the turmoil of the past few days have felt like an eternity. For the first time in days, I retracted from my stupor to look all around me, at the debris of life in which I am drowning. I remember a hand putting a few spoonfuls of rice and curry in my mouth which I obediently chewed and swallowed, a soft yet unyielding hand which would not tolerate a refusal. Dev, this other version of me, who belonged to me in a forgotten past, which never belonged to me.

Source text - French SOURCE TEXT – ‘LA ROBE’ Je l’avais suivi toute l’après-midi. Il n’avait pas cessé de marcher, d’un pas lent et égal. Je m’étais insensiblement rapproché de lui. Il se retournait souvent, marmonnait à mon adresse des discours inaudibles. Il me fixa, puis s’assit sur la marche d’une porte cochère en inclinant la tête sur sa poitrine. Son aspect était remarquable. Il portait une vareuse militaire, élimée, la plupart des boutons et des brandebourgs manquaient. Le col, haut et roide, montrait encore ce que je reconnus être l’insigne d’un régiment célèbre. Mon habitude était plutôt à d’autres types de poursuites. Le libertinage, dont j’avais fait ma principale occupation, amusait mes amis. On me demandait quelles nouvelles aventures avaient occupé mon temps… Mais de cette après-midi, je ne dis jamais rien, à quiquonque. L’impression qu’elle me fit demeure en moi de manière étrange. C’est un lieu commun de prétendre que certaines rencontres infléchissent le cours d’une vie, l’orientent dans une direction insoupçonnée. De telles expériences, pourtant ne font qu’ajouter à ce que l’on est. Il est fréquent d’oublier qui en fut la cause. La vague provoquée s’ajoute à tous les autres et on reconnaît là, selon ses convictions, la force du hasard ou celle du destin. Plus rares sont les évènements auxquels on ne peut accorder aucune place, qui restent en soi comme des lignes infranchissables. Bien des mots que me confia cet homme sont aujourd’hui oubliée, mais je conserve l’essentiel comme un troublant héritage. Parvenu tout près de lui, je ne m’inquiétai pas plus longtemps des convenances. Je m’assis à ses côtés, certain que c’était exactement ce qu’il souhaitait. J’eus un instant l’impression d’être captif d’une toile secrète qui nous reliait, lui et moi; lui, au centre, agitant ces fils invisibles que tissent les araignées, moi, dans le rôle d’une proie fatiguée de ses vaines tentatives de fuites. Il tourna une nouvelle fois son regard dans ma direction. Le visage n’était pas moins extraordinaire que le vêtement. Les rides profondes trahissaient l’âge et les soucis, mais les yeux clairs étaient empreints d’une grande douceur. Je côtoyais l’un de ces êtres qui longent la vie sans réellement lui appartenir, et dont le rêve masque la plénitude des faits. Par la fraîcheur de ses intonations, la voix trahissait une âme épargnée par le temps, figée quelque part dans le passé. “ J’ai connu cette ville commença-t-il, bien avant qu’elle ne devînt ce que vous connaissez. Je suis si vieux que je pourrais vous parler longtemps d’un univers aujourd’hui anéanti… Les lourds charrois de céréales qui longeaient dangereusement les trottoirs mal éclairés, toute ces femmes en robe longues et chapeaux, la vitrine basse des magasins, les crieurs de la rue… Et la caserne où j’avais mes appartements inconfortables d’aspirant officier. Imaginez une série de bâtiments de quatre étages, très longs et disposés en carré. Imaginez encore la vaste cours intérieure, résonnant du matin au soir au passage des chevaux sur le pavé. Chaque aspirant avait une cinquantaine d’hommes sous ses ordres. En cette période qui précédait immédiatement la guerre, les manœuvres étaient permanents. À vrai dire, elle nous épuisait. Dès l’aube, le clairon nous tirait du lit; nous ne cessions qu’avec la tombée du jour. Ce n’était partout que maniement d’armes et mouvements de pelotons. Les ordres lancés peuplaient ce monde clos de hourvaris sauvages. Une fois notre travail fini, nous sortions en ville pour nous distraire un peu. Nous nous rendions par petits groupes chez “Taskia”, une auberge proche de la caserne où l’on pût toujours nous retrouver en cas de mobilisation rapide. Nous avions, ce jour là, avec quelques amis, convenu d’une soirée plus animée que les autres en l’occasion de l’anniversaire de Marcus, l’un des boute-en-train de la compagnie. L’alcool devait couler à flots. Nous pensâmes aussi nombres de ces filles que nous courtisions sans peine du fait de notre jeunesse et de notre statut avantageux. Je dois avouer pourtant que de telles agapes, assez fréquente, m’ennuyaient. Sans vouloir faire bande à part, je ne me mêlais qu’à moitié aux fantaisies de mes camarades. On mettait sur le compte d’une psychologie taciturne ce manque d’entrain que je tentais vainement de cacher. On se moquait de moi gentiment. On ironisait sur le peu de cas que je faisais des demoiselles. L’alcool était une consolation, mais il n’empêchait pas de suivre la pente naturelle ma mélancolie. Marcus me fit sursauter en me saisissant brutalement par l’épaule. La jeune fille qui l’accompagnait me regardait en souriant, prête à jouer son rôle d’offrande. On s’amusa d’un étonnement que je ne feignais pas. - Quand cesseras-tu de rêvasser? demanda mon ami, riant plus fort que les autres. Tu ne sais pas de quoi demain sera fait. La guerre sûrement! Les combats…La chasteté! Profite de l’instant qui passe. Prends! D’un geste, il poussa la fille. Je dus la retenir pour éviter qu’elle ne se heurte contre moi. Je lui demandai pardon. Elle répondit, elle aussi, en riant, montrant deux rangées de dents très blanches dans un charmant visage. Elle me plut immédiatement, mais pour une autre raison. Sa personne me confondait avec celle d’Alvinczy, l’un de mes soldats. Depuis longtemps, j’étais attaché au charme de cet homme par un lien que je n’osais pas trop interroger. J’aimais son caractère enjoué, ses manière franches, et même les histoires grivoises qu’il se plaisait à raconter. Coureur de jupon invétéré, il profitait d’un exceptionnel pouvoir d’attraction pour séduire les femmes mariées. Maintes mésaventures se disaient à son propos. Il s’était battu plusieurs fois en duel et revenait régulièrement blessé à la caserne, le bras en écharpe, le visage tuméfié. Né pour les plaisirs et les dangers, rien ne lui plaisait davantage que les fréquents déplacements du régiment, ces arrivées dans les villes étrangères durant lesquelles, d’un coup d’œil, il mesurait la beauté des femmes aux fenêtres. Marcus finit par me laisser seul avec la fille que j’avais invitée à ma table. Elle ne faisait plus que sourire en acceptant de bonne grâce la boisson que je lui proposai, un vin fruité, délicieusement pétillant. J’allumais un cigare. Elle regardait autour d’elle en tapant parfois dans ses mains. Les danseurs l’amusaient. Elle venait de ces lointaines contrées de l’Empire où l’on parle difficilement notre langue, ce qui ne la gênait guère dans ses relations avec les soldats. Je cessai bientôt de lui poser des questions qu’elle ne comprenait pas. M’estimant libérer du rôle fastidieux de chevalier servant, je laissai ma pensée rappeler librement les souvenirs de la journée. Un exercice difficile avait occupé mes soldats une bonne partie de celle-ci. Certaines épouses d’officiers nous suivaient loin du regard. Je devinais leur intérêt pour mon subalterne, grand gaillard aux épaules bien faites, qui nous dépassait tous d’une tête. Je l’encourageai à nous conter l’une de ses frasques sentimentales. - Si vous y tenez ! fit-il, la mine plus grave que d’habitude. J’ai peur malheureusement, que ce ne soit pas très drôle … On connaît tous des filles par ici, mais celle dont je vais vous parler est différente… Un geste péremptoire stoppa net les moqueries naissantes. - … Elle doit être Italienne à en juger par son accent. Elle n’est pas aussi grande que les filles de chez nous, et je ne pense même pas qu’elle soit aussi jolie que certaines de celles que nous connaissons. En le crossant je remarquai ses yeux, très bleus, d’un éclat difficile à soutenir. « Ces deux là sortent du lot, me suis-je dit, ils se sont bien trouvés ». Le gars n’était pas de ces vulgaires bourgeois qui entretiennent une demi-mondaine. Il avait quelque chose d’autre, de l’autorité, un charme indéfinissable et inquiétant. Après une courte promenade, il quitta sa jeune compagne en bas d’un immeuble du quartier riche. J’étais resté à distance raisonnable, prenant les airs d’un promeneur nonchalant. Croyant la voir disparaître à son tour, je notai l’adresse dans ma mémoire et me promis de revenir un jour tenter ma chance. Mais la belle restai immobile devant sa porte, attendant visiblement quelque chose. Son compagnon s’était depuis longtemps évanoui dans la nuit, quand, tournant sa tête dans ma direction, elle fit un geste sans équivoque. Je n’en crus pas mes yeux. Je me retournai sottement pour vérifier si l’appel ne visait pas quelqu’un d’autre, mais la rue était parfaitement déserte. « Vous m’avez appelé, Madame ? » Elle ne répondit rien, me poussa dans l’allée, ferma la lourde porte, et là devant le haut miroir vénitien qui décorait l’entrée, elle souleva sa robe et me demanda de… Ce que je fis sans hésiter, debout, la saisissant fermement par les hanches. Certains se demandaient alors si Alvinczy avait revu sa maîtresse, mais celui-ci ne dit plus rien de son aventure rocambolesque. Il leva la main en signe d’abandon et détourna la conversation sur une autre de ses conquêtes. Aucunes de nos prières, aucunes de nos admonestations ne parvint à le convaincre. On dut se contenter de l’une de ces histoires égrillardes que le soldat racontait si bien ; ses camarades, tous acquis aux nouvelles scènes qu’une imagination virtuose dessinait devant eux, oublièrent bientôt la belle italienne. J’attendis donc patiemment la fin de notre travail et invitai discrètement Alvinczy à rejoindre ma chambre, demande à laquelle il agréa sans rechigner, souriant largement, devinant déjà l’objet de ma curiosité. J’avais tout préparé pour qu’il se sente à son aise. Des cigares en nombres, deux bouteilles de bon vin et des verres en cristal reposaient sur mon bureau. Il s’assit dans l’un de mes fauteuils, seul confort permis par l’exiguïté des lieux. Encouragé par un début d’ivresse, il confia la suite de son histoire sans se faire prier. - Bien sûr, je fus ponctuel au rendez-vous. Je m’étais mis au mieux, coiffé, parfumé, rasé de près. Elle m’attendait en bas. Son visage apparaissait par transparence sous une voilette noire. Elle me prit la main et nous montâmes au « bel étage » en empruntant l’escalier. Que vous dire ? Cette femme dépasse tout ce que je sais en matière d’amour. Sa façon de s’emparer de vous… Lieutenant, je crains d’être vulgaire ! J’encourageai mon orateur à poursuivre librement son récit, ce qu’il fit, mais en s’embrouillant tellement que je n’eus guère le genre de détails que j’escomptais. Je retins l’essentiel : l’Italienne était une maîtresse d’une rare habileté, capable de mettre le cœur d’un libertin aussi avéré qu’Alvinczy sens dessus dessous. Je demandai quel était le décor, comment était arrangé l’appartement, y avait-il des livres, des objets particuliers ? - Il n’y a rien, Lieutenant ! Rien, hormis un large canapé sur lequel… Et quelques lampes. Pas de meubles, de tableaux… Un grand appartement tout vide qui sent le moisit ! Je m’étonnai encore davantage d’une telle révélation. Un héritage, peut-être… Un appartement déserté qu’elle occupait en attendant de le vendre. Je supposai qu’une femme d’une telle sensualité ne pouvait rester longtemps sans amant. Je devinais le vieil homme à ses côtés dans le rôle d’un notaire ou d’un avoué, une relation pour passer le temps, avant toutes ses affaires ne soient réglées. - Vous avez sûrement raison, dit Alvinczy sans conviction. Je lui demandai de préciser les raisons de sa gêne. - C’est le vieux, mon Lieutenant. Pas du tout le genre que vous évoquez. Je vous l’ai dit, j’ai eu le temps de croiser son regard. Je ne saurais dire pourquoi, mais cet homme est un gaillard, le genre de type que l’on évite si l’on veut conserver la santé. Rien que de penser à lui me fait froid dans le dos. Alvinczy n’était pas facilement impressionnable. Ce qu’il avoua de l’inconnu n’en parut donc que plus frappant. - Si d’aventure nous devions régler un litige pour les raisons que vous savez, Lieutenant, vous auriez beau jeu de parier sur lui. Je ne donne pas cher de ma peau ! Le soldat continua tant bien que mal le récit de son idylle. Ses mots agissaient sur moi comme un philtre. Je sus avec certitude qu’il me faudrait, à mon tour, rencontrer cette femme. Je sentais toute ma volonté tendre vers ce but. Je profitai d’un silence pour avancer ma requête. Il n’en parut pas surpris. - Cette femme vous plaira, mon Lieutenant, elle est instruite, cela se sent, elle est de votre monde. Comptez sur moi pour vous la faire connaître. Seulement… Il s’arrêta, cherchant en lui-même à préciser une idée très confuse. Je lui servis un autre verre de vin et tendis un cigare qu’il accepta sans se départir de son air songeur. - … Seulement, il vous faudra prendre garde. Cette Italienne n’est pas une simple fille à soldat, elle porte un secret, c’est évident ! Peut-être est-ce une espionne, quelque chose comme ça… Je n’aimerais pas que vous tombiez dans un guêpier ! Je me dirigeai vers la fenêtre en souriant. J’ouvris largement les deux vantaux. La nuit était douce. Nous convînmes d’un arrangement qui me permettrait de le rencontrer bientôt. Depuis longtemps je n’avais plus éprouvé cette délicieuse nervosité qui précède les rendez-vous. Alvinczy ne m’avait pas menti. L’italienne était une femme remarquable. Nous choisîmes une place en terrasse ; elle commanda un thé et une pâtisserie. Il faisait beau. Le café Kreüzer était fréquenté par la bonne bourgeoisie de notre ville. Nous ne déparâmes pas l’harmonie feutrée du lieu. J’avais revêtu mon plus bel uniforme et mon invitée, en toilette noire, attirait tous les regards. Engager la conversation ne fut pas difficile ; Rosetta- ce prénom qu’elle me confia être le sien- faisait partie de ces personnes avec lesquelles on se sent immédiatement à son aise. Nous parlâmes de choses et d’autres avant d’aborder le sujet qui occupait, à cette époque, tous les esprits. - Pensez-vous que votre régiment sera bientôt réquisitionné ?, demanda-t-elle avec cette pointe d’accent qui ajoutait encore à son charme. Je répondis que nous autres, soldats, n’étions guerre en mesure de lire le jeu compliqué des politiques. Des bruits couraient concernant un départ dans les semaines à venir. Elle resta silencieuse un moment. - Je connais bien la guerre, reprit-elle en m’adressant un sourire désarmant. Mon père, Officier lui aussi, nourrissait pour elle une passion exclusive. J’ai de lui, le souvenir de ces incessants départs en campagne, ces malles que l’on prépare, ce pistolet qui me faisait si peur, entièrement démonté sur la table du salon afin d’être nettoyé. Mon père suivait la guerre comme d’autres courtisent l’orage ou la peste. Il aimait son contacte, la frénésie qui s’empare des hommes si près de mourir. Je crois, ajouta-t-elle en riant, qu’il eut volontiers décoré nos murs de ses nombreux trophées si ma mère ne s’y était opposée ! Je me souviens de cantines emplies de drapeaux, de médailles, de fanions de toutes sortes, des uniformes de toutes ces armées qui achetaient ses services à prix d’or. Je levai les sourcils en signe d’étonnement. Je n’eus pas le temps de demander une précision. - Il était mercenaire… Est-ce bien ainsi que l’on qualifie cette profession ? Apatride, Eternel voyageur, un père trop souvent absent mais que nous adorions ! Je songeai à son compagnon de l’opéra, celui qui avait si profondément troublé Alvinczy. En risquant d’être indiscret, je l’interrogeai à ce propos. Sa réponse prit une tournure énigmatique. - Quand je pense à lui, c’est la cîme d’une colline que je vois, une ligne cachée par des lambeaux de brume. On sait que, là-haut, vivent des animaux fantastiques, l’air y est à la fois doux et dangereux. Je n’insistai pas et nous reprîmes une conversation plus commune. Trois hommes, que j’avais remarqués à l’autre bout de la terrasse, changèrent de place et vinrent s’asseoir tout près de nous. Ils avaient trop bu. Ils parlaient fort, rompant le calme ordinaire des lieux. Des clients les regardaient de travers. Les serveurs en veste blanche commençaient à s’inquiéter ; l’un d’eux avertit le chef de salle, un vieil homme aux allures obséquieuses. Nos voisins échangeaient le contenu de leurs aventures galantes. On aurait pu les entendre de loin. Chaque détail particulièrement suggestif s’accompagnait d’une œillade prononcée en direction de Rosetta. Celle-ci n’en parut pas gênée, elle ignorait leur mise en scène, continuant de me parler comme si de rien n’était. Perdant de la patience, j’interrompis brusquement leur jeu en me levant et en leur demandant de se taire. La salle entière se tourna vers nous. L’un des trois hommes, plus éméché que les autres, se dressa à son tour en trébuchant. Il prononça des menaces auxquelles je ne répondis rien. S’énervant d’autant plus de ce silence, il devint plus menaçant, brandissant son poing, prêt à frapper. Ce qui suivit m’étonna beaucoup. Le chef de salle vint précipitamment nous séparer. Il mit la main sur l’épaule de mon assaillant et lui confia à voix basse des mots que je n’entendis pas. L’homme pâlit extrêmement ; on eût dit une marionnette à qui l’on vient de couper les fils. Dévisageant Rosetta, il s’inclina devant elle en lui présentant de plates excuses. Puis il s’adressa à ses amis, leur intimant l’ordre de le suivre. Je le vis quitter la terrasse sans se retourner. Le chef de salle les accompagnait, rassurant au passage les clients dérangés par l’évènement. Je commandai un verre d’Obstler que l’on m’apporta accompagné de deux coupes de champagne aux frais de la maison. Le serveur réitéra ses politesses, mais je ne l’écoutai plus, tout entier à ce qui venait de se passer. Rosetta semblait de très bonne humeur, elle but une gorgée de vin et leva les yeux sur moi. - Vous vouliez me rencontrer… Êtes-vous déçu ? Gardé-je une chance de vous plaire ? Toute ma physionomie servit de réponse. Elle sourit, faussement rassurée, et reprit. - Vous vous posez beaucoup de questions. Tout le monde connaît la réputation de mon… protecteur. Tranquillisez-vous, il n’y a aucun mal à ce que j’aie des amis. Je ne suis pas ici depuis longtemps, je ne connais pas grand monde. Du coin de l’œil, je cherchai l’homme dont m’avait parlé Alvinczy parmi toutes les personnes attablées, mais je ne voyais que des gens bien ordinaires. - Il y a des chambres au-dessus… Voulez-vous que nous en profitions ? Je savais Rosetta plutôt directe en manière d’amour, je ne m’inquiétai donc pas de la proposition. Elle appela le chef de salle et demanda que l’on nous prépare la petite chambre bleue donc la fenêtre donnait sur le canal. - Vous verrez, c’est minuscule, mais tellement charmant ! dit-elle en me prenant la main. Nous parlâmes encore un peu, puis elle m’invita à la suivre. Le petit escalier était tendu d’un tapis épais qui étouffait nos pas. Sur les murs, on voyait des scènes de chasse, la figure de Diane accompagnée de ses chiens occupait le milieu d’une tenture. La chambre semblait un lieu parfait pour des amours telles que les nôtres. Aucune note chaude dans les couleurs ne venait rompre une atmosphère apaisante. Un grand lit emplissait presque tout l’espace. Sur une desserte, on avait préparé un plateau de champagne dans un seau argenté. La fenêtre, encadrée de deux grands rideaux sombres, s’ouvrait sur le petit canal et le pont fleuri qui l’enjambait. Rosetta ôta son chapeau et défit ses longs cheveux retenus par un chignon. Elle se déshabilla devant moi. Un corps d’une beauté parfaite se dévoila sous mes yeux. A vrai dire, je n’avais pas fréquenté de femmes depuis longtemps, je me sentais intimidé et gauche, mais ma compagne fit tout pour me rasséréner. Nous nous aimâmes avec ardeur, mélangeant nos caresses de rires et de champagnes. Mes compagnons remarquèrent bien vite mon changement d’attitude. J’étais plus avenant, il m’arrivait de siffloter en marchant. Marcus fit le premier à m’adresser des plaisanteries. Je répondais sur le même ton, chose extraordinaire pour un homme naguère avare de ses sourires. Alvinczy, seul, connaissait on secret, les autres ne faisait que supposer l’influence d’une femme dont je ne leur parlais qu’a demi-mot. Je voyais régulièrement Rosetta. La chambre chez Kreüzer était notre rendez-vous préféré, mais il nous arrivait d’essayer d’autres lieux. Je lui faisais découvrir notre ville et ses environs. Les beaux endroits ne manquaient pas ; j’avais suffisamment de fortune pour satisfaire toutes les demandes de ma maîtresse. Nous nous fîmes ainsi connaître un peu partout. Les patrons d’auberge nous glissaient un coup d’œil entendu et le personnel, encouragé par des pourboires généreux, veillaient à notre confort. Je découvris en moi un sentiment nouveau, délicieux et douloureux. L’amour, puisqu’il s’agissait bien de cela, occupait chaque seconde de ma vie. Je souffrais cruellement de nos séparations ; les exercices, les manœuvres, toujours aussi fréquents, me semblaient une tâche absurde. Je songeais à démissionner. Comment aurais-je pu vivre encore dans cette horrible caserne, au milieu de ces soldats devenus presque des étrangers ? Je faisais partie d’une famille de la haute noblesse, très connue à l’époque. Mes parents, dont j’étais le fils unique, n’avaient jamais voulu que je m’enrôle. Ils avaient usé jusqu’à la dernière minute de tous les arguments capable de me dissuader. On aurait donc accepté avec soulagement ma décision, quelles qu’n fussent les raisons. Seul me retenait encore le sentiment de trahir ma patrie à un moment où elle avait besoin de moi. Je décidai de rester, craignant toutefois, plus que tout au monde, un ordre de départ pouvant survenir à n’importe quel moment. Mais celui-ci tardait ; les jours, les semaines s’écoulaient sans que personne n’eût pu dire quand la guerre serait effectivement déclarée. Cette incertitude confortait ma propre indécision. Je laissais faire les évènements, sûr de pouvoir, au bon moment exercer un choix judicieux. Mes relations avec Rosetta s’intensifiaient à chaque nouvelle rencontre. Je gagnais en assurance. Je répondais de mieux en mieux au désir qu’elle savait allumer en moi d’une façon si particulière. Je lui confiais mon envie de quitter l’armée, de me consacrer à elle entièrement. Elle m’en dissuada de prononcer un mot. S’étant habillée, elle déposa un baiser sur mon front et me quitta pour l’une de ces soirées qu’elle passait régulièrement loin de moi. Je ne savais presque rien d’elle. Par instinct, j’étais persuadé devoir préserver l’indépendance totale de son caractère. Mes questions la gênaient, elle répondait de façon allusive, ou faisait diversion d’un baiser. C’eût été la perdre que d’insister davantage. Je m’habituer donc à son mystère, à ses silences, jouissant de ce qu’elle offrait, une présence brûlante de sensualité. Heureusement, Alvinczy avait pris l’habitude de venir me visiter. Nos fréquentes rencontres distrayaient mes moments de solitudes forcée ; j’écoutais en riant le récit de ses nombreuses aventures. Nous fumions beaucoup et buvions tout autant. Il venait parfois avec deux filles, une à chaque bras, en chantant des airs de sa lointaine campagne. Mon nom à particule impressionnait ces gens simple. Les copains et moi n’avions que des bâtons prolongés d’une lame émoussée. Ça ne nous empêchait pas de ramener plus de chevreuils que les nobliaux du coin ! Pourquoi ? Parce que nous devenions des loups rôdant dans la nuit. Nous connaissions la forêt, nous devinions par instinct les voies dans les taillis. On ne peut chasser si l’on ne s’accorde pas avec ce que l’on cherche, si l’on n’est pas en harmonie avec sa proie. - Vous commencez à le comprendre avec les femmes. Un bon amant n’est plus lui-même. Cela m’est arrivé à Novi-Bazar. C’est vrai que je suis bon tireur, et rapide, mais ce que j’aime surtout c’est la profonde unité, vous comprenez ? Celle qui vous lie avec le lieu et le moment. Un bon conseil, mon Lieutenant, si vous vous postez quelque part en embuscade, roulez vous dans la terre, écoutez le chant des oiseaux, pas un détail ne doit vous échapper ! Observer les petits insectes qui dégringolent du haut d’un talus. Salissez-vous, que votre tête soit pleine de glaise, que vos mains ne luisent plus, ni vos yeux, ni rien. Si vous vous battez en forêt, vous serez vêtu de mousses. Les forces souterraines glisseront dans votre corps, s’empareront de votre poitrine, commanderont vos gestes. Par chez nous, on parle d’un géant d’argile qu’on appelle le Golem. Il rôde dans les rues et bouffe tous ceux qui osent sortir de chez eux. Voilà le bon soldat ! Un Golem en pleine nuit, habillée terre et d’écorces. Gare à celui qui laisse un bout de cigarette rougeoyer dans le noir. Il est déjà mort. Pour appuyer son propos, Alvinczy glissa rapidement le tranchant de la main sur sa gorge. Ses yeux luisaient. Il revint s’asseoir et me fixa étrangement. - Il y a mieux. On ne fait pas la guerre sans abattre l’ennemi qu’on porte en soi. Le bon combattant est un homme totalement libre. Bien qu’il me semblât comprendre à demi-mot ce qu’il voulait signifier, je lui demandai d’éclaircir ce jugement sibyllin. Pour toute réponse, il prononça encore le nom d’Hermann. - Lui, vous dira… Je sollicitai vainement d’autres explications. Le géant se leva une nouvelle fois, saisi ma veste et ma casquette restées sur le portemanteau. - Venez ! fit-il sur un ton péremptoire, bous aimez voir et comprendre, vous aurez l’un par moi et l’autre par Hermann… s’il y consent. Je lui demandai si nous nous rendions chez cet homme. Il hocha la tête. La caserne était vide ; au poste de sortie, les sentinelles de garde claquèrent des talons à notre passage. La ville nous ouvrit ses longues rangées de rues pavées, parfaitement alignées. Des tavernes étaient encore ouvertes. On entendait rire et chanter. Dans une ruelle étroite que nous prîmes en raccourci, une voiture à cheval nous croisa. Le cocher, craignant que le fracas de sabots ne suffise pas, se mit à hurler. Nous nous plaquâmes contre le mur. Alvinczy avait conservé son allure inaccoutumée. Une idée mobilisait toute son âme. Il ne faisait pas attention à moi, marchait droit devant lui comme un automate. Nous parvînmes devant la grille d’une villa apparaissant au bout d’une allée. Mon compagnon agita une cloche. Un domestique en livrée vint à notre rencontre et nous invita à le suivre. Le vent commençait à se lever, les buissons s’agitaient dans la nuit ; dans le lointain du parc entourant la bâtisse, un oiseau poussa son cri. Alvinczy se rapprocha de moi.	Translation - English TARGET TEXT – ‘THE RED GOWN’ I had followed him all afternoon. He did not falter, walking in a slow and steady pace. Imperceptibly, I found myself drawn closer to him. He would often abruptly turn around, muttering indecipherable words in my direction. He stared at me, and then sat upon the step of a passageway, his head tilted upon his chest. He had an exceptional appearance. He was wearing a threadbare military jacket, most of whose buttons and frogs were missing. The stiff, high collar still exhibited what I recognised to be the emblem of a prestigious regiment. I was usually more naturally inclined towards other types of pursuits. Debauchery, which had become my primary vocation, amused my friends. They were curious to know what new affair was taking up my time. But of this particular afternoon I never said a word to anybody. I can still recall the strange way in which it touched me. It is commonplace to claim that certain encounters modify the course of life and reorientates us in a totally different direction, one that we could never have imagined. Nevertheless these meetings affect who we are. It is also banal to forget the person responsible for it. The wave born out of it adds up to the rest and through our convictions we realise the strength of chance or destiny. Even rarer are the events which cannot be shelved, which rest within us like impassable lines. Although many of the words entrusted to me by that old man are now forgotten, as one would a troubling legacy, its essence remains. Having come so close to him, I was no longer bothered about decency. I sat next to him, certain that this was exactly what he wanted. For a brief moment, I felt like I was the prisoner of a secret web connecting both of us; him in the middle, shaking the invisible threads spun by spiders, me in the role of the prey, exhausted from my futile attempts at escape. Once again, he turned his gaze towards me. His face was just as impressive as his attire. The deep wrinkles, etched into his face were a testimony of his age and its accompanying burdens but the bright eyes were filled with gentleness. I was in the company of one of those beings who live life but are not owned by it, and whose dreams blind the richness of their action. The purity of his voice and the words he uttered betrayed a soul which had been spared by time, frozen somewhere in the past. “I have known this town, he began, well before it became the one you are familiar with. I am so old that I could tell you all about a universe now destroyed… The heavy carts full of grain which dangerously skirted the poorly lit footpaths, all the women dressed in ankle length gowns and hats, the low display windows of shops, the street hawkers… And about the barrack where my uncomfortable living quarters as an officer aspirant were found. Picture a range of four-floored buildings laid out in a square pattern. Further imagine an immense courtyard, echoing with the sound of horse hooves upon the paves from morning till nightfall. Every aspirant had around fifty men under his command. In the time immediately preceding war, strategies made were permanent. In all honesty, they exhausted us. From dawn, the sound of the clarion would pull us out of bed; we would only stop by dusk. Everywhere there was only the handling of arms and the displacement of platoons. The orders, loudly shouted out filled this compact world of savage uproars. Once our work was finished, we went out in the town looking for some distraction. In small groups, we would go to the “Taskia”, a small inn which was found close to the barrack where we could always gather around in the event of a rapid mobilisation. On that day, with a few friends, we had decided to organise a more lively night than usual in honour of the birthday of Marcus, one of the life and soul of the group. Alcohol was plentiful. Our military status and youth made it easy for us to court the ladies. However, I must admit that such Jove feasts bored me. Not wanting to be excluded from the group, I would only half-heartedly take part in the fantasies of my friends. They would blame the lack of interest which I unsuccessfully tried to conceal on a psychological closeness. They would playfully tease me. They would ironically wonder about my lack of interest in the ladies. Drinking alcohol was a good outlet but that did not stop me from following the natural descent into melancholy. Marcus startled me by grabbing my shoulder in a brutish manner. The young girl by his side was looking at me, smiling, ready to play the part of the sacrifice. They laughed at my uninhibited astonishment. - When will you stop daydreaming? my friend asked, with a laugh heartier than that of the others. You don’t know what the future has in store for us. I liked his lively personality, his frank mannerisms and even the bawdy stories that he regaled us with. A born womanizer, he took advantage of his amazing sexual appeal to seduce married women. He was well known for several misadventures. He would often get into scuffles and return wounded to the barrack, his arm in a sling, his face swollen. Born for indulgence and danger, nothing would please him more than the frequent displacements of the regiment and their arrival in unknown towns during which, at a glance, he would gauge the beauty of the women by the windows. In the end, Marcus left me alone with the girl, whom I had invited to join my table. All she did was smile while gracefully accepting the drink that I offered her, a fruity wine, delectably bubbly. I lit a cigar. She would gaze all around and would often clap her hands. The dancers amused her. She came from those distant lands of the empire where people have difficulty in speaking our tongue which hardly mattered in her interactions with the soldiers. I soon stopped asking her incomprehensible questions. Thinking myself freed from the tiresome ordeal of knightly duty, I allowed my thoughts to drift freely over the remembrance of my day. Most of my soldiers’ time had been taken up by a demanding drilling session. Some of the Officers’ wives would follow our movements from afar. I sensed their interest in my Subaltern, a burly man with perfectly formed shoulders, whose height exceeded ours by a head. But at that time, Alvinczy was focused on nothing but my commands. The chinstrap of his shako stiffened his face; the peak of the cap concealed his blue eyes which were surrounded by thick, black eyelashes. During the lengthy hours, our movements followed consecutively in diverse manoeuvres. Right, left, forward, backward, fifty hussars strived to achieve the type of perfection of movement which turns numbers into units. I finally allowed them a well deserved break. As usual, the men gathered around Alvinczy. The giant of a man pulled a flask of rum from his pocket and the men passed it around despite its prohibition. I urged him to recount one of his sentimental indiscretions. - If you insist! he said, sporting a more serious look than usual. Unfortunately, I’m afraid that this one is not so amusing. We all know girls around here, but the one I am going to tell you about is unique… With an autocratic gesture, he abruptly stopped all the nascent mockery. - …Judging by her accent, she had to be Italian. She was not as tall as the girls from home or even as beautiful as some of them. Still, to see her once is like pouring hot embers in your heart! - Where did you meet her? one of them asked, I have never seen an Italian around here. - By chance. I was standing on the street when a hoard of spectators was leaving the opera. I immediately noticed her upon the arms of an elderly gentleman. Not once did the thought that she could be his daughter come to my mind. They were giving each other amorous looks, holding each other tightly, it was a perfect love story. The old man must have been wealthy, he was well dressed in a dark tail coat. Passing by him, I noticed his eyes, of a piercing deep blue, brimming of a barely contained sparkle; “These two stand out from the crowd, I thought, they suit each other perfectly.” The man was not one of these cheap aristocrats who keep a rich mistress. There was something else, a hint of authority, an inexplicable and uneasy magnetism. A brief stroll later, he left his young companion by one of the buildings in the rich neighbourhood. Pretending to be a casual stroller, I had kept an adequate distance. Thinking that in turn, she would also disappear, I mentally took note of the address and promised myself that one day, I would come back to try my luck. However, the beautiful woman stood still in front of the door, obviously waiting for something. Her partner had long since disappeared into the night when, suddenly, she turned towards me and clearly beckoned. I could not believe my eyes. I foolishly turned back to check whether the call was meant for someone else but the street appeared to be completely deserted. “You called me, Madam?” She kept quiet, pushing me into the corridor, she closed the massive door, and right there, in front of the tall Venetian mirror decorating the hallway, she raised the skirt of her gown and asked me to… Which I did, without any hesitation, upright, holding her firmly by the hips. Our union did not last long. She got dressed and made me promise to come back the following day, at the same time. She lived alone, so I had nothing to fear. She vanished behind the screened door of the elevator and I found myself on the street, with an unbelievably confused heart and soul. Some of them were curious to know whether Alvinczy had met his mistress again, but the hussar said no more of his incredible adventure. He raised his hand in a token of surrender and diverted the conversation to another one of his conquests. No amount of pleading and admonition succeeded in convincing him. We had to settle for one of the bawdy tales that the soldier was so good at narrating; his friends, enthralled by the fresh scenarios laid out before them by a virtuoso mind, soon forgot all about the beautiful Italian. I must admit, that the task proved to be much harder for me. I was astonished at the risk taken by this woman with a complete stranger in a bourgeois neighborhood. I needed to find out more at any cost. I thus waited patiently until the end of our session before discretely convening a meeting with Alvinczy in my room, a request to which he immediately agreed. He was smiling broadly, having already guessed the subject of my curiosity. I had set everything up to make him feel at ease. Cigars, two bottles of expensive wine and several crystal tumblers rested on my desk. He sat in one of my armchairs, the only comfort possible in the small room. Spurred on by a dawning drunkenness, he finished the rest of the story without any coercion on my part. - Of course I was on time for the rendezvous. I was dressed at my best, hair combed, perfumed, close-shaved. She was waiting for me downstairs. Her face shone through the filmy transparency of a black veil. She took my hand and we climbed up to the “beautiful floor” by taking the stairs. What can I tell you? The woman surpassed everything that I knew about love. Her way of holding you in her grips… Lieutenant, I’m afraid I might sound vulgar! I urged my orator to pursue his tale freely, which he did, but in such a muddled manner that I was barely told about the type of information I was hoping to obtain. I retained only the gist; the Italian woman was a mistress of unusual skills, able to render the heart of a confirmed rake like Alvinczy upside down. I asked about the décor, how was the apartment arranged, whether there were any books, particular objects? - There was nothing Lieutenant! Nothing besides a large settee on which… And a few incandescent lamps. No furniture, no paintings… Only a huge empty apartment with a musty smell! I was even more astonished by this piece of information. Maybe a legacy… A deserted apartment which she was occupying while awaiting its sale. I presumed that such a sensuous woman could not go long without a lover. I assumed the old man by her side to be either a solicitor or a lawyer, a casual relationship for time pass, before all her affairs were sorted out. - You are most certainly right, said Alvinczy without much conviction. I asked him to clarify the reason for his discomfort. - It’s the old man, Lieutenant. Not at all the type that you are alluding to. I told you, I was able to cross his gaze. I would not be able to explain the reason, but the man is a strapping fellow, the kind of person one avoids if one wants to stay in good health. The mere thought of him makes me shudder. Alvinczy was not easily impressed so what he confessed about the stranger seemed even more striking. - If perchance we had to settle a dispute for the obvious reasons, Lieutenant, you could easily bet on him. I wouldn’t want to be in your shoes! Somehow, the soldier carried on reciting his idyll. His words washed over me like a love potion. I knew without hesitation that I, in turn would have to meet this woman. I felt the willpower of my entire being reach out towards that goal. A lull in the conversation enabled me to put forward my request. He did not seem surprised. - You will like this woman, Lieutenant, she is well educated, I can sense it, she comes from your world. You can count on me to introduce you to her. Although… He stopped, seeking within the correct words to express a very complex thought. I served him another glass of wine and offered him a cigar which he accepted without departing from his pensive air. - …However, you should be on your guards. This Italian woman is not a mere soldier’s girl, she is obviously withholding a secret. Maybe she’s a spy or something of the sort. I wouldn’t want you to fall into a trap! I walked towards the window, smiling. I pushed the double doors wide open. It was a gentle night. We concocted a plan that would soon enable me to meet her. For quite a while now, I hadn’t experienced this delightful jittery feeling that precedes a rendezvous. Alvinczy had not lied to me. The Italian was a magnificent woman. We chose a table outside on the paved terrace; she ordered tea and pastry. The weather was beautiful. Café Kreüzer was frequented by the bourgeoisie of our city. Our presence did not mar the muffled harmony of the locale. I had worn my most formidable uniform, and my guest, dressed in black was attracting everybody’s attention. Initiating a conversation was not difficult; Rosetta- the name that she confided she was to be hers- was one of the people with whom you feel an immediate ease. We spoke about this, that and the other before finally bringing up the topic that occupied everybody’s mind at the time. - Do you think that your regiment will soon be drafted in?, she asked with the merest hint of an accent that added even more to her comeliness. I replicated that simple soldiers like us were not in a position to read the complicated game that is politics. There had been rumours about a shift in the coming weeks. She kept quiet for a while. - I am quite familiar with the topic of war, she resumed with a disarming smile. My father, who was also an Officer, exclusively nurtured a passion for her. From him, I have the memory of continuous commutes to the countryside, the trunks that were packed, the pistol which scared me so much, entirely stripped down waiting to be cleaned. My father pursued war like others court storms or the plague. He cherished its touch, the frenzy which takes hold of men who are so close to death. I think that he would have gladly decorated our walls with his numerous trophies if my mother hadn’t been against it, she added laughingly. I still remember the dining hall filled with flags, medals, all sorts of pennants, uniforms of all the armies that would hire his services at high prices. My eyebrows arched in astonishment. I did not have the time to clarify a doubt. - He was a mercenary. Is that the correct way to describe such a profession? A stateless, eternal nomad, a father too often absent, but whom we worshipped! I wondered about her opera friend, the one who had so deeply disturbed Alvinczy. Running the risk of seeming meddlesome, I asked her about it. She answered with an unexpected twist. - When I think about him, it is the summit of a hill that I see, a line hidden by shreds of mist. We all know that there are imaginary animals living up above, where the atmosphere is both soft and dangerous. I did not persist with the topic and we resumed with a more casual topic conversation. Three men, whom I had noticed at the other end of the outdoor terrace, changed seats and moved closer to us. They had consumed too much of alcohol. Their loud conversation disrupted the habitual serenity of the place. Customers were looking at them cross eyed. The waiters, dressed in white coloured overcoats started to get alarmed; one of them warned the Maître D’, an old, fawny looking man. Our neighbours were exchanging the detailed content of their amorous encounters. Their voice could be have been heard from quite a distance away. Every detail, especially the vulgar ones was followed by a lingering look in the direction of Rosetta. The latter did not seem to be embarrassed in the least, she ignored their act, pursuing her conversation with me as though everything was fine. Losing my calm, I sharply interrupted their game by standing up and demanding silence. The entire room turned towards us. One of the three men, more drunk than the others also stood up, stumbling. He voiced some threats to which I did not respond. My silence rendered him angrier and he became even more menacing, brandishing his fist, ready to strike. What followed greatly astonished me. The Maître D’ suddenly rushed forward to separate us. He placed a hand on my attacker’s shoulder and in a low tone confided some words to him which I was unable to grasp. The man turned white with fear, you would have thought him to be a puppet whose strings got cut. He stared hard at Rosetta, and then bowed down, profusely asking for forgiveness. He then turned towards his friends, ordering them to follow him. I watched him leave the terrace without a backward glance. The Maître D’ accompanied them, all the while reassuring the customers who had been disturbed by the events. I ordered a glass of Obstler which was brought along with two glasses of champagne, on the house. The waiter once more apologised but I was no longer listening to him, my attention entirely focused upon the recent events. Rosetta seemed to be in a very good mood, she sipped a mouthful of wine before looking up at me. - You wanted to meet me… Have I let you down? Did I meet your expectations? Do I still have the chance to please you? The expression on my face said it all. She smiled, somewhat relieved and resumed the conversation. - You are asking yourself too many questions. Everyone knows the reputation of my… protector. Don’t worry, there is nothing wrong in making friends. I have not been here for a long time, I do not know many people. From the corner of my eye, I searched for the man Alvinczy had described amongst all the seated people but all I could see were ordinary people. - There are rooms upstairs… Would you like to make the most of it? I knew Rosetta to be very direct in matters of love and so wasn’t alarmed by the offer. She called the Maître D’ and asked him to prepare the little blue room whose windows overlooked the channel. - You will see, it’s tiny but so fetching, she said, taking hold of my hand. We talked some more, and then she invited me to follow her. A thick carpet stretched over the narrow stairway muffled our footsteps. Upon the walls, we could see pictures of hunting scenes, the centre of the tapestry on the wall depicting the Italic Goddess of hunt, Diane accompanied by her dogs. The room seemed to be perfect for love affairs such as ours. The soothing atmosphere of the room was unmarred by warm tones. A towering bed filled the room almost entirely. Upon a platter, on a service, they had prepared a silver bucket containing a chilled bottle of champagne. The window, framed by two dark curtains, opened over the small channel and the flower filled bridge that straddled it/straddling it. Rosetta removed her hat and loosened her long locks of hair tightly held in a bun. She undressed in front of my eyes. To be honest, I had not been with a woman in a long time, and felt intimidated and clumsy but my partner did everything to reassure me. We made love with passion, combining our caresses with laughter and champagne. My mates soon noticed the change in my behaviour. I was much more pleasant, I would sometimes whistle while walking. Marcus was the first to tease me about it. I would respond in the same register, something surprising for a man once miserly with his smiles. Only Alvinczy knew my secret, the others attributed my change to the influence of a woman whom I mentioned only sparingly. I would regularly see Rosetta. The room at Kreüzer was our preferred meeting place although on occasion, we would try new places. I made her discover our town and the surrounding places. There was no lack of beautiful spots; I was wealthy enough to satisfy all the desires of my mistress. We thus became known in quite a few places. Innkeepers would throw meaningful glances at us, while the staff, encouraged by the generous tips ensured our comfort. I discovered the existence of a new emotion within myself, both delicious and painful. Love, since that was what it was, had taken over every second of my life. I ruthlessly suffered from our separations; the drilling sessions, the manoeuvres, always as regular, now seemed to be a meaningless endeavour. I thought about giving up. How could I still be living in that dreadful barrack amongst soldiers who had practically become strangers? I belonged to a family of the noble class, very well known at the time. Being the only son, my parents had never wanted me to enlist in the army. Until the last moment, they had used every possible argument to dissuade me. My decision would thus have been accepted with relief, whatever be the causes. The only reason holding me back was the sentiment of going against my motherland at a time when she needed me. I decided to persevere fearing more than anything the imminent order of a departure that could arise at any time. But that order was tardy and days and weeks flew by such that nobody could predict when war would definitively be declared. This uncertainty reinforced my own indecisiveness. I allowed the coming events to dictate my actions, certain that at the right moment, I would be capable of making the wise choice. My relationship with Rosetta escalated after each encounter. My confidence grew. I responded better still to the passion she could kindle so well in me in her own particular way. I confided in her my longing to leave the army to devote myself entirely to her. Her silence deterred me from doing so. Having gotten dressed, she kissed me on the forehead and left to attend one of the evenings that she so regularly spent away from me. I knew almost nothing about her. My instinct warned me to retain the entire integrity of her temperament. My questions embarrassed her, she would retort with vague answers or would divert me with a kiss. I only ran the risk of losing her by insisting more. I thus got accustomed to her mystery, to her silence, making the most of what she offered, a presence burning up with sensuality. Fortunately, Alvinczy had gotten into the habit of visiting me. Our frequent meetings occupied the moments of solitude thrust upon me; I laughingly listened to his numerous adventures. We smoked a lot and drank just as much. He would sometimes be accompanied by two girls, one on each arm, humming the tunes of his distant village. My name, with the added participle impressed these simple people. At times, my only purpose was being a witness to their carnal pleasures. Nothing ever satisfied them. The young women, exhausted, would look at me helplessly. They would leave in the early hours of the morning, their make-up smudged, gown hastily pulled on. Alvinczy would rarely keep his promise of seeing them again. For him, women were only worth to be with him once. One night, he came to me bearing an unusually serious face. He had to talk to me about something important, he said. We downed two to three glasses of brandy. He finally sat on the armchair and lit an enormous cigar which he pulled out of his pocket. - It comes from the Caribbean, where girls roll the tobacco on their thighs. It is a gift from Hermann. He remained silent when I inquired about the man, drew in a breath of fresh air then resumed. - Lieutenant, you don’t know anything about love, you don’t know anything about war either. Your drilling sessions and kid’s work are of no use against the enemy. You do not hunt a savage beast using a military manual. My entire childhood was spent hunting big game. Me and my buddies would often equipped solely with long sticks tipped by a blunt blade. That wouldn’t stop us from reeling in more roe than the nearby squires. Why? Because we turned into wolves lurking in the night. We by hearted the forest, our instinct would guide us toward the tracks in the woods. You cannot hunt if you’re not connected to the object of your search, if you are not in unity with your prey. You understand the concept better with women. The perfect lover is no longer himself. He becomes two bodies at once, his own and that of his mistress. When you fall in love, don’t expect to preserve your intelligence. You have to fill in the gap which separates you from the other. Without that, you are nothing but a simpleton. Alvinczy pretended to spit with disgust. He got up and walked towards the window. The moon was cloaked by clouds. The silence of the night darkened his speech. - We fight in the same way. You and your adversary become one. You can feel him pointing his gun. You have already located the tip of his gasper. He scopes you as a target while jesting with one of his friends. Will he hit the head or the chest? At such a distance! Those bastards make bets. And there you are, all stiff in your starched uniform, an obvious target, which is suddenly set into motion, shoulders and shoots, before the other. The man keels over, his nose hitting the mud, his face will darken by nightfall. His stomach will bloat. The summer heat will cause him to stink so badly that the wind will carry his carrion smell. This happened to me in Novi-Bazar. It is true that I am an excellent marksman and swift as well but what I hold onto above all is solidarity; does that make any sense to you? That which connects you to the place and time. Take my advice Lieutenant, if you are stationed anywhere in an ambush, roll yourself in the mud, listen to the birds chirping, not a single detail should slip by you! Observe the small insects toppling down the banks. Dirty yourself, your head should be covered with clay to conceal the reflection of light on your hands or your eyes or anything else, for that matter. If the battle is in a forest, you will be dressed in moss. Subterranean forces will take possession of your chest and control your actions. At home, we talk about a giant made of clay, which we call the ‘Golem’. It lurks down the streets and attacks all those who dare come out of their homes. There’s a good hussar! A Golem in the middle of the night dressed in soil and barks. Beware, he who leaves a cigarette butt glowing in the dark. He is already dead. To emphasise his statement, Alvinczy rapidly swiped the flat of his hand across his throat. His eyes were shining. He returned to his seat and stared at me strangely. - There’s more. You do not fight a war without first having killed the enemy you carry within. The best warrior is a completely unattached man. Even though he himself seemed to comprehend only half of what he was saying, I asked him to clarify his words. The only answer I got was a repetition of the name Hermann. - He will tell you… In vain, I asked for more elucidation. The gigantic man got up once again and grabbed my coat and hat from the hanger. - Come! he said, in a commanding tone, you want to watch and understand, you will get one lesson from me, the other from Hermann… if he is willing. I asked if we were going to the man’s place. He nodded affirmatively. The barrack was completely deserted. When we passed the exit station, the sentry guards clicked their heels. The city opened up to rows of paved streets, perfectly aligned. The taverns were still open. We could hear laughter and singing. In a narrow street that we took as short cut, a horse drawn carriage passed us by. The coachman, afraid that the thundering sound of hooves would not suffice, shouted out. We flattened ourselves against the wall. Alvinczy still had that unusual look. An idea had taken hold of his soul. He completely ignored me, walking straight ahead like a robot. We reached the gate of a villa found at the end of an alley. My friend rang a bell. A uniformed servant answered our call and invited us to follow him. The wind was picking up. In the distance, where the park surrounded the edifice, a bird uttered its cry. Alvinczy sidled closer to me.

Source text - French Chapitre 1 Mort du jour, au Souffleur. Et la mer, dans les rochers, a son chant d’écume, son cri d’eau troublée. Les vagues pénètrent dans la falaise et s’égarent dans les cheminées qu’elles y ont creusées. Le bruit de la mer est semblable à celui de la mort : terrible et infini. Quelquefois, il s’interrompt; le temps devient lourd et lent. La chaleur s’échappe en vapeurs de la terre, en une longue écharpe de somnolence. Puis s’infiltrent dans cette moiteur des bruits subreptices, un cri de souris, un grésillement d’insectes, ou l’ululement sourd d’un oiseau caché. Cet endroit n’a pas d’âge. Des temps d’ardeur et d’anéantissement ont laissé leur trace sur les pierres. Au-delà. Au-dehors, plus rien ; un complot de silences. L’étourdissement de la mer qui donne un rythme – marée haute, marée basse – à mes heures, qui frange d’écume le bord de mon horizon mais ne m’effleure qu’à peine. La même lourdeur habite le verger de letcheyers non loin, où les fruits mûrissent par inadvertance. Ils sont pris, eux aussi, par leur cycle d’espoir et d’abandon. Au bout du sentier pentu qui mène parmi les ombres de letcheyers, ce verger, ces dédales, ses arbres qui se dissimulent derrière d’autres, ses échos incertains, comme des orages prisonniers sous les feuilles, m’attend. Les oiseaux ont été troubles par une explosion venant de la mer. Ils se taisent, effarouchés. Le bruit sourd et liquide me parvient de loin, la fenêtre s’illumine d’un épanchement de gouttelettes. C’est une dynamite de pêcheur. Dans quelques instants, des centaines de petits cadavres parsèmeront la surface, et l’eau, lentement, se mettra à rougir. Mais le cyclone est passé et les pêcheurs ont faim. Ils ne veulent pas voir mourir leurs enfants. Je sors en entendant des pas sur le gravier. C’est Dominique. Je la vois venir de loin, avec son abondante chevelure crépue, rouge vif, décolorée par les lavages au peroxyde. Dominique a le teint des gens de Chamarel, une bouche ourlée, des yeux rieurs, moqueurs, elle est le flamboyant de ses lieux, leur source magique. Elle travaille à l’usine, non loin d’ici, qui depuis quelques temps semble avoir avalé toutes les filles de la région. Je n’arrive pas à l’imaginer, courbée sur une machine à coudre ou fabriquant des sandales de caoutchouc à longueur de journée. Elle se libère d’ailleurs dès qu’elle le peut, elle s’achète des chaussures à talons, des rouge a lèvres cramoisi, des robes légères. Des corsages échancrées, des jupettes a fleur, ou rayées, selon son humeur. D’autres fois, elle va pied nu, goutant à la spongieuse humidité de l’herbe sous la peau. Elle vient me voir, se montre, s’exhibe. Je suis sa seule spectatrice. A part tous les jeunes hommes du village qui soupirent et sourient à son passage et qu’elle ne semble pas voir. Elle est la fille du jardinier-pêcheur. Elle a dû être dans une vie antérieure, oiseau ou arbre car elle est si peu humaine. Elle joue avec la vie, un peu fée, et s’enfuit dès qu’elle décèle dans un regard un désir de possession. On ne peut pas la posséder. Elle est la derrière les libertés offertes. En ce moment, elle est immobile dans le dernier soleil du jour, absorbant la lumière avec cette concentration entière qui la caractérise. Je me suis approchée sans bruit. Elle se tourne à demi vers moi et, sans préambule, m’annonce : « J’ai rencontre un homme… Je fais un effort de parler, moi qui suis demeurée si longtemps silencieuse que j’en ai perdu le sens des mots. (A vingt ans, ayant déjà connu toutes les gammes, les variations et les déclinaisons de la douleur, j’avais brise le mince fil qui me rattachait à la raison et à la réalité, je m’étais affublé le nom de Gungi, la muette. Je m’étais tournée face a un mur et au silence pour ne pas entendre le bruit de ma mémoire.) - Qui est-ce ? Elle secoue la tête, le regard déjà ailleurs, inquiète d’autres choses : - Tiens, je ne connais même pas son nom… Elle se jette dans l’herbe, lourdement, robe soulevée sur ses jambes, enfouit son visage dans les plantes humides de la sueur de la terre. - Quelle importance ? » Une telle liberté ne devrait pas être permise. Il n’y a en elle aucune peur. Elle ne connait pas l’angoisse du moment prochain. Pour elle, demain n’est que promesses. Ce n’est pourtant pas l’anticipation du paradis qui nous mène en avant, mais la crainte de l’enfer. Elle aperçoit, dans l’herbe, non loin d’elle, un moineau tombe du grand badamier. Elle le prend entre ses paumes, l’approche tout contre son visage. Il ouvre le bec, on dirait qu’il extrait quelque dernier souffle de la bouche dorée toute proche. Un instant, ils sont mêlés, ses cheveux enveloppent l’oiseau, elle m’a oubliée. Comme m’oublient tous ceux que j’ai connus, à un moment ou à un autre, comme je m’oublie moi-même, si souvent. Les plantes et les animaux puisent en elle leur vitalité et s’éteignent lorsqu’elle est absente. Elle est l’enchanteresse de cette forêt de Brocéliande de l’île, mais moi, je ne suis que de passage, avec le souffle de mort qui traîne paresseusement à mes pieds, et qui prend tout son temps pour réclamer ses victimes. Mais moi aussi, je prends tout mon temps. Pour poser des jalons dans cette endroit qui n’en finit pas de se dérobé, pour rencontrer chaque arbre et chaque fleur et ne pas oublier les chemins que j’ai suivis vers eux. Les bougainvillées dévalant des murets de pierre ; ou l’unique orchidée qui s’ouvre dans sa cachette jalousement protégée par un bouquet d’arbre, lorsque les oiseaux se taisent ; ou bien encore ce parfum de ‘chaméli’, fleur sacrée, qui envahit le verger d’un seul coup à l’heure silencieuse entre jour et soir, ce vertigineux crépuscule qui ne dure que quelques secondes. Mais on aura beau le chercher, parcourir l’espace où le parfum semble le plus dense, on ne le retrouvera pas vivant. Ce n’est qu’au matin, à bout de souffle, épuise, qu’on le verra gisant dans un lit de mousse comme une bête morte. Ce territoire est un havre, mais il a ses espaces d’inquiétude, lorsque Dominique ne l’allume plus de sa présence, lorsque le soir tombe sur son fouillis de vies animales. Tant que Dominique est là, je n’ai pas peur. Elle est sereine et tenace à la fois. Dans la vieille maison au volets verts, je ne me sens pas si seule, je perçois partout sa présence, même si elle est loin, a rouler dans les ors du sable, avec un homme dont elle ne connaît pas le nom, ou a courir dans un champ de canne avec son sourire riche et résonnant, le duvet transparent des feuilles s’accrochant a ses cheveux et a ses bras. Ce n’est pas ma jeunesse que je revis à travers elle, mais une autre richesse, neuve, riche et pleine de pouvoirs. Peu importe si je suis une passagère entre ses murs, il y a des choses qui ont une permanence, il ya la maison, vétustes, informe, et les gens qui m’entourent, qui ont l’air incrusté là comme des mollusques à leur roc. Le père de Dominique, mon jardinier-pêcheur, avec son visage marqué par le vent et le sel, ses mains épaisses et peut être cruelles, sa voix profonde et si rare. Lorsque je suis arrivée, il était dans le jardin, il taillait les arbustes et les bambous et c’est a peine s’il m’a regardée lorsque je lui aie dit qu’ils pouvaient rester, lui et Dominique. Ils faisaient tous les deux partie des lieux, et les éléments qui constituaient le tableau devaient demeurer invisibles. Je devais m’y insérer sans en troubler la paix. La première fois que j’ai tenté d’explorer les environs, j’ai senti que les choses en étaient remuées, dérangées. Les arbres s’agitaient, mal a l’aise. Les fleurs avaient l’air de pâlir. L’herbe ne reconnaissait pas mes pas, ni l’air de mon souffle. J’étais l’intruse devant laquelle se dérobent toutes les intimités. Je devais réapprendre à marcher, a respirer, a me mouvoir sans déranger les ordres entrelacées des arbres et des créatures. M’effacer pour mieux leur appartenir. Mais je distinguais partout une énergie folle, péremptoire et indomptée, qui commande ou condamne, qui crée ou qui détruit, et qui n’aime pas l’humain. Peut être à la longue finira-t-il par s’opère en moi une obscure transformation. Une a une, mes fibres résoudront leurs écartèlement, elles se feront plus denses pour mieux recevoir les magnétismes suspendus dans l’air, et alors, je deviendrai, moi aussi, un peu arbre, un peu oiseau distillerais même la lumière, je l’instillerai en retour a petites doses dans les veines minuscules et blondes des plantes sauvages, et la plante de ‘lait caillé’ recevra dans chacune de ses taches une goutte d’argent. Moi, qui souffrais jadis de claustrophobie, qui ne supportais pas les plafonds bas ni les espaces exigus j’éprouve aujourd’hui le besoin de me terrer, de m’emmitoufler dans une sécurité aussi factice qu’elle est austère. Lorsque j’ai peur d’entrevoir au plafond de la nuit un visage connu, je me refugie dans ma mansarde, je m’y enferme, la tête toute proche des poutres. Les insectes fissurent les cloisons, bourdonnent autour de moi avec familiarité. Je me sens bien, ainsi entourée, même si je sais qu’ils finiront un jour par ronger les assises même de la maison. Une petite lucarne, un œil-de-bœuf, s’ouvre sur l’une des cloisons. Elle me permet d’entrevoir, de mon lit, un pan de ciel exigu. Mais il suffit d’avoir la vue restreinte comme celle d’un prisonnier, des barreaux au regard, un intérieur nu et carcéral, pour découvrir l’infini de ce ciel révélé au compte-goutte. Ainsi dissimulée dans mes encoignures secrètes, j’essaie d’échapper au quotidien, à ses luttes et à ses inquiétudes. Mais je ne suis jamais en paix. Le soir, j’entends les chiens errants – ils sont des dizaines et des dizaines qui viennent on ne sait d’où – qui se meuvent en collectivité autour de la maison. Ils n’aboient pas, mais ils bougent ensemble, les corps se frottant les uns contre les autres avec un son de cher et de pelage bruissant, les haleines épaisses qui s’enflent d’un grognement sourd, les pattes épineuses crissant sur le gravier, arrachant l’herbe sèche et drue. Quelque chose les attire peut-être ici, cette présence vieillie que je sens en moi-même dans la maison et alentour. Mais il n’y a rien de tangible, ni identifiable. Ils sentent la même chose en moi, et, bien que je n’aime pas les chiens, je me sens tout de même liée à eux par cet instinct commun. Ils passent au moins une heure dans le jardin, a gratter la terre, a renifler le bas des murs, a remuer les plantes ; cherchant, fouillant, flairant, ils ne savent pas eux-mêmes quoi. Terre, ciel, nuage et air sont imprégnés de leur odeur de bête, de leur souffle chaud et fiévreux, d’un affairement anxieux au creux de leur ventre. Le lendemain, le jardin demeure lourd et déprimé et se remet mal de leur passage. Moi aussi je me sens lourde, massive, paresseuse, je porte en moi souvent des chiens. Il y a des choses qu’il est difficile de supporter, tous ces inconnus qui imprègnent la terre et la rende dense et multiforme. Ces mystères conjugués qui nous entourent et que l’on renie ou que l’on ignore. Dans cet univers peuplé de divinités plurielles qui s’incarnent en toutes choses, et que je dois adorer pour suivre, les dieux sont puissants et incléments, comme celui qui hante les yeux du jardinier-pêcheur et qui lui impose tour à tour un devoir de création et un désir de destruction. Comme Dominique, qui est parfois effrayante et masquée lorsqu’elle va vers la grange ou vers la mer, lorsqu’elle va franchir les frontières que je ne peux pas, moi, dépasser. Cette vie mutilée m’entoure et m’entraine, et je me laisse porter, sans courage et sans défi. Beaucoup de choses ont changes depuis que j’ai cesse d’entendre les paroles grondantes et ténébreuses, résonnant dans un temple, où le temps semblait être figée parmi les icônes aux yeux exorbites, d’un homme qui implorait la divinité pour obtenir la paix universelle. Je l’ai ai effacées. Car après tout, cela ne peut pas exister ; cette paix et ces prières ne sont que de mensonges, qu’une piteuse supercherie. La preuve, c’est qu’il m’a fallu qu’une nuit pour défaire l’ouvrage de tant d’années. C’est tout ce que valent les prières, celle qui apprennent a coup de trique et a coup d’humiliations, d’un dévouement issu du désespoir, dans le temple foudroyé de nos enfances. Le soir s’évade vers un matin souple et vagabond. Comme d’habitude, le sommeil me fuit. Il y a une bousculade dans ma tête. Je dois renoncer au sommeil et reprendre ma vigie a la lucarne. Mais l’année où ils me sont apparus, l’ancien propriétaire de la chasse a eu un accident, fortuit ou pas, dans la loge, et il en est mort. Avec le bruit qui couraient a propos des chiens et de je ne sais quelle malchance, le nouveau propriétaire a pris peur et il m’a fait don de la loge. Il n’a jamais voulu y mettre les pieds. Je suis devenu propriétaire d’une petite partie de la foret. La partie la plus noire… Il me toise du regard, s’attendant a je ne sais quelle réaction de ma part. Mais il s’assombrit vite, car je n’ai fait aucun geste, je n’ai pas prononcé un mot. J’ai pensé, presque oisivement, au gout qu’aurait l’union avec un corps semblable au mien, même teint caramélisé, même cheveux noir-huilé, même aspect de terre battue. Comme s’unir à soi-même ou à une autre image de soi. Mais mes yeux d’interdit ne m’avaient permis de connaitre que la saveur douce-amère de la peau de Jérôme, au grain serré, aux affleurements du sang, au duvet blond et transparent. Et encore, ce corps aride et quasi virginal qu’est le mien n’avait eu droit, de toute sa vie d’ascèse et de renoncement, qu’a une nuit. J’ai eu la certitude que je n’étais qu’un lointain vestige, voue au renoncement. Une ligne fragile et esquissée me séparait de l’oubli. Il suffisait d’un geste, a peine douloureux, pour la franchir. Engourdie, étourdie d’une telle certitude, je me suis ouvert les veines. D’abord est venue un agréable repos. Des tensions inconnues, insoupçonnées, m’ont abandonnées, les muscles en débandade se sont dénoues. Les impressions ont cessé de se manifester en mots et en pensées de ma tête. J’ai éteint mon esprit comme on éteint une lumière. Mes yeux se sont renfermés sur une clarté douceâtre et brillante à la fois. Ma nuque s’est reposée de toute une vie de raideur. Mes épaules se sont enfoncées dans la terre. Mon dos se confondait avec les racines. Puis au bout du repos, il y a eu un autre travail qui commençait, cette fois hors de ma volonté. Mon corps se désagrégeaient, mais une autre vie, ou plutôt, une multitude d’autres vies m’avaient envahit. Celles qui allaient trouver en moi une nouvelle naissance. Ma tête est devenue une bulle aérée. Dans mes paumes ouvertes frétillaient des fourmis rouges. Je n’ai toujours pas bougé. Je me suis senti sans âge, j’étais cette terre, pleine de vies autres, de fractions de vie et, bien que morte, il y avait en moi une gestation continue qui était ma continuité propre. J’étais linéaire, m’enfonçant graduellement dans un rythme profond et grave. Je n’avais plus besoin de l’intermédiaire d’un corps pour me fondre aux choses ambiantes, au contraire, le corps n’était plus qu’une barrière en voie de désagrégation, pour le reste, j’étais tout, je sentais tout. Au-dessus, il y avait du bleue. Beaucoup de bleue que j’entrevoyais à travers mes paupières fermées et qui n’était pas le ciel. C’était un bleu nu et gratuit qui n’avait pas de nom. Ni de relief ni de limite ni de profondeur ni de poids. C’était une couleur tout simplement, c’était Bleu. Bleu m’a enveloppée, un suaire sur mon corps immobilisé, en suspens, en repos. Bleu qui me ténèbre même sur ce rivage d’or ou je suis allongée, respirant a pleins poumons l’haleine des lumières. Qui doit l’emporter loin de moi, loin de ces noyades de solitaires, dans la verdure, dans le silence, dans la pesanteur des souvenirs. Mourir dans le Bleu, quelle plus grande joie, quelle plus souveraine délivrance… Mais je ne suis pas morte. Je me suis endormie. En me réveillant, au bout de je ne sais combien d’heures ou de jours, j’étais pénétrée de l’odeur de la terre et de la conviction que toutes les créatures entrevues m’avaient légué leur vie : mes poignets s’étaient cicatrisés d’eux même. Seule, une flaque de sang brun témoignait de mon suicide. Je me suis levée, la tête légère, pensant ‘il n’est pas encore temps.’ Pour la première fois depuis longtemps, je me suis permis de penser à Jérôme. Non que cela m’était difficile, je devais, en arrivant ici, m’efforcer, au contraire, d’oblitérer sa présence, d’en faire abstraction afin que la douleur abrupte qui m’avais habité si longtemps après mon départ, ne me revienne en traitre. Mais après mon expérience, mon ‘jeu de mort’, il m’a semblé plus facile de penser a ces choses. De reconstruire peu à peu l’étrange parcours qui m’avait menée jusqu’ici, au Souffleur, sur cette limite de l’île aux allures de point finale. Ce parcours n’avait certes pas débuter avec Jérôme, mais avait bifurqué lorsque j’avais franchi pour la première fois, jeune, maigre, assaillie de doutes et de maladies, les portes de son ashram, du havre qu’avait fondé mon guru blond. Cette première fois, il avait parle de la fusion de toutes les choses. Nous étions rassembles là, un groupe disparate et incertain, et il avait marché parmi nous avec un sourire – ce sourire – et il nous avait dit d’oublier où nous étions et qui nous étions, de dépasser cette salle nue et l’ashram silencieux, et le jardin, et l’île, et l’univers, de passer outre toutes ces barrières physique qui nous encastraient pour apprendre à voir. Quelqu’un, les yeux fermés, inquiet, avait murmuré, « mais je ne vois rien… » Il s’était arrêté de marché, s’était penché vers le jeune homme angoissé. Je crois qu’il avait pose la main sur son épaule. - Vous êtes trop conscient de vous, lui avait-il dit. Oubliez-vous. J’entends encore sa voie. La tonalité douce, paisible, mesurée, s’écoulant sur mes peurs, moi qui sortait de mon adolescence brûlée et m’efforçait d’oublier les meurtrissures et les plaies. Je le vois comme une lumière glissant parmi les ombres de l’ashram entouré d’immenses manguiers centenaires. Je le vois comme une porte s’ouvrant au plus sombre de la vie. Et pourtant, il n’était pas un rêve. Autour de lui, il y avait la réalité. Les journaux l’avaient décrit ainsi : Le Jésus de Bénarès. Le guru blond. Le gars de Krishna. L’avatar du siècle. Une caricature le représentait en ascète. Les cheveux emmêlés lui retombant sur les épaules, les ongles démesurés, vêtu seulement d’un court vêtement autour des reins. La légende disait « renvoyons-le à Himalaya ! » Pour moi, il était plus qu’un homme. Je crois que je l’ai adoré comme on adore les dieux alors même que je croyais avoir laissé derrière moi toute trace de foi aveugle. Il avait passe des années à parcourir le monde à la recherche des réponses. Il avait fais le tour des croyances, celles, puériles, qui promettaient la guérison l’âme et le châtiment par le feu. Celles, illusoires, qui assuraient une lointaine rédemption. Il voulait savoir qui il était, et pourquoi, il trouva des réponses au bord du Gange. Ou du moins, le cru t-il. Et, fort de ses découvertes, il se mit a prêcher, a fonder des ashrams, a attirer partout les brebis galeuses et les laissés-pour-compte. Sans se rendre compte que de telles vérités ne pourraient être partagées. Tous ses ashrams finirent par être abandonnés ou incendiés, les habitants persécutes et pourchasses. C’est commun s’il trainait derrière lui une ancienne malédiction qui n’aurait de cesse que lorsqu’elle l’aurait entièrement détruit. Au bout de ce temps, il dut se rendre à l’évidence : il ne pouvait les protéger. Il n’avait aucun pouvoir. Lorsque je l’ai connu, le visage était usé, et les yeux ne souriaient plus que rarement. Et pourtant, il s’accrochait toujours a une foi qui n’avait peut-être plus de sens que pour lui, et pour certains, comme moi, qui avaient été jetés tels des épaves sur ses bergers. Nous étions peut-être ses bouées de sauvetage. Lui, qui avait tant cherché, ne pouvait croire en rien d’autre que ces êtres fatigués qu’il ramenait tout doucement vers l’espoir. Il avait ouvert les portes de l’ashram et nous appeler tous a lui, comme un grand souffle d’air. Comment le décrire, tel que je le voyais a cette époque avec l’avidité de la jeunesse et tel que je le vois maintenant, avec toute ma charge de tristesse ? Non, ces deux images sont trop paradoxales. Il a faillit être un dieu. Il était arrivé dans l’ile comme chargé d’un dernier espoir. Poussé par ce désir d’absolu qui ne sera jamais assouvi, si vite suivit d’amertume. Il voulait a tout prix remplir sa mission, dépasser son état d’homme – mais homme, Jérôme, homme est tout ce qu’on sera jamais, et c’est déjà bien assez – mais il n’était ni d’ici ni de là, ni prêtre ni guru, ni blanc ni noir. Dans ce pays aux différences enracinées, l’accueil ne pouvait être chaleureux. Cela avait commence par des manifestations contre lui et l’ashram qu’il comptait fonder. Par la presse, la radio, dans les meetings publics, la haine l’avait pris de plein fouet. Il allait de porte en porte sur ses sandales de caoutchouc, dans la chaleur de Port-Louis qui fondait l’asphalte sous ses pieds et créait chez les gens une étrange torpeur, il faisait la quête pour l’ashram, mais n’obtenait qu’une curiosité malsaine. Quelques personnes s’étaient mises à le suivre, certaines pour se moquer, d’autres par compassion, prêtes à croire au prophète. Mais ce n’était qu’un bien pauvre cortège, qui n’avait rien en commun avec les grands mouvements de foule qui habitaient ses rêves… Nous étions en 1967, l’île était en lutte avec bien d’autres fantômes. On se préoccupait peu de ceux que l’on connaissait si mal, de l’autre côté de la barrière, de l’autre côté de l’univers. Ceux qui ne voulaient s’engager dans la lutte se refugiaient dans l’indifférence, d’autres se battaient a coup de mots barbare, le langage laid et injurieux de la haine raciale. Les maigres cortèges qui suivaient Jérôme finirent par devenir un symbole qu’il fallait détruire. On menaça Jérôme de le déporter. Puis, in jour, Govinda, un jeune homme de dix-huit ans, fut tué à coup de pierres dans une rixe. Jérôme me racontera sa mort, rongé de culpabilité. Il avait emmène ses ‘disciples’ (un bien grand mot, murmura-t-il, se moquant de lui-même) a Port-Louis, et ils étaient passes devant une mosquée a l’heure de la prière. Govinda s’était mit, peut-être par bravade, a chanter des prières hindoues. Et les hommes étaient sortis de la mosquée… A la mort du jeune homme, Jérôme s’était retire dans un petit village du sud. Il avait voulu se refugier dans le silence. Mais petit à petit, les gens étaient venus à lui. Tranquillement, sans éclat, la maison de tôle qu’il habitait s’était agrandie, des pièces avait été rajoutes par des mains maladroites. Les villageois l’avaient pris en affection, le trouvant amusant et inoffensif. Un a un, ils s’étaient mis à fréquenter l’ashram, ne comprenant qu’a moitie le sens de ses paroles, eux qui étaient hindoues de naissance et par habitude, et qui vivait leur foi sans poser de questions. Ils avaient aide à construire l’ashram. Du fait de cette unité bizarrement agencée par les circonstances, ils s’étaient ligues contre toutes les vagues de révolte menaçant de prendre l’ashram d’assaut. Jérôme était devenu leur figure de proue, leur lampe de tempête, apportant au village anonyme un semblant de célébrités. Peu à peu, d’autres disciples étaient venu se joindre à eux, de l’ile même, des iles avoisinantes, d’Europe. La petite communauté s’était organisée autour de son rythme védique, s’était insérée dans l’ordre, était devenu respectable a ses propres yeux sinon a ceux des autres qui y voyaient toujours une communauté de hippies et de drogués. Mais il demeurait, envers et contre tout, un imperceptible décalage dans ce minuscule univers encadré de murs gris. C’était un monde en porte-à-faux du monde véritable, rassemblant des gens dissemblables, qui y vivaient comme en sursis. Ceux qui chantaient les versets du Gita sur un air de cantique, avec des voix de baryton ; ceux qui fermaient les yeux et se balançaient sous les vapeurs de l’encens comme sous l’effet d’une drogue saumâtre, ceux qui regardait Jérôme avec des yeux immenses et embues comme s’ils avaient devant eux l’incarnation de Krishna…..	Translation - English Chapter 1 It was the Day of Death at Souffleur. The sea, twirling between the rocks, has its own foamy cadence, its cry of a tortured water. The waves find their way into the cliff and lose themselves into the chimney-like structures that they polished/filed away with time. The sound of the sea is like that of death: formidable and infinite. Sometimes, it stops; the atmosphere becomes sultry and slow. Heat seeps through the earth as vapour, like a long drowsy scarf. Then, through the moistness of the surreptitious sounds comes the squeak of a rat, the chirp of insects, or the deafening ululation of a hidden bird. This place is ageless. Times of heat and annihilation have left their mark upon the stones. Beyond, outside, absolutely nothing; it is a conspiracy of silences. The dizziness that lends a rhythmic movement to the sea – high tide, low tide – at my times, that adds a frothy fringe to the outline of my horizon but which barely grazes me. The same sultriness hangs around the litchi orchard, not far from here, where the fruits are ripened forcefully by the heat. They are also consumed by the cycle of hope and abandonment. At the end of the steep trail that leads under the shade of the litchi trees to the orchard, to the maze, to the trees hiding behind each other, its unpredictable echoes, like thunder held captive by the leaves, waits for me. The birds have been disturbed by the sound of a blast coming from the sea. Wary, their ruckus subsides/they grow quiet. The deafening liquid sound reaches my ears from a distance, the window pane is briefly illuminated by an effusion of droplets. It is a fisherman’s dynamite. In a while, the surface will be sprinkled over with hundreds of small corpses, and the water, slowly, will turn on a reddish hue. But the cyclone has hit the island and the fishermen are hungry. They do not want to see their children dying. I go outside, upon hearing the sound of footsteps on the gravel. It’s Dominique. I can see her coming from afar, with her abundant mass of frizzy hair, bright red in colour, bleached by peroxide shampoos/washes/rinses. Dominique has the typical skin colour of the people of Chamarel, well defined lips, smiling, teasing eyes, she is the Flamboyant tree of the locality, their magical source. She works at the nearby factory that seems to have absorbed all the girls of the neighbourhood lately. I can’t even conceive/picture it, girls hunched over a sewing machine or making rubber flip flops all day long. For that reason, she takes time off as soon as she can, she buys high heeled shoes, crimson lipstick, airy dresses. Bodices with plunging necklines, flower patterned or stripped skirts, depending upon her mood. At other times, she goes barefoot, feeling the spongy humidity of the grass against her skin. She comes to see me, shows off. I am her only female audience apart from all the young men in the village who sign and smile when she passes by, and who she never seems to notice. She is the daughter of the gardener cum fisherman. In a previous life she must have been bird or tree as she is so less human-like. She plays with life, somewhat like a fairy and takes flight as soon as she detects a look of possession in somebody’s eyes. Nobody can own her. She is the last of the freedoms offered. Right now, she is motionless, absorbing the light from the last rays of the sun with the complete focus that characterises her. I quietly came closer. She turned halfway towards me and, without any preliminaries announced: “I met a man... I try to speak, I who have remained silent for so long that I forgot the meaning of words. (At the age of twenty, having already experienced all the ranges, types and declensions of pain, I had snapped the thin line that connected me to reason and to reality. I had been attributed the name of Gungi, the dumb. I had chosen to face a wall and embrace silence to block out the clatter of my memory.) - Who is it? She shakes her head, her wandering look already elsewhere, worried about other things: - There, I don’t even know his name... She throws herself down onto the grass, with a thud, her raised dress showing her thighs and buries her face in the greenery moistened from the perspiration of the earth. - What’s the point? Such freedom should not be allowed. There is no fear within her. She does not know the anxiety of the coming moment. For her, tomorrow holds nothing but promises. It is, however not the anticipation of heaven that pulls us forwards, but the fear of hell. She catches sight of a sparrow that fell from the big almond tree on the grass not far from her. She takes it in her palm, brings it close to her face. It opens its beak, it seems as though the bird is sucking up the last sign of the golden mouth next to it. For a moment, they are combined, her hair falls onto the bird, she has already forgotten about me. Just like all those whom I have known, have forgotten me, at one time or another, as I so often forget myself. The plants and animals draw their strength from within her and fade out when she is gone. She is the enchantress of the island’s forest of Broceliande, legendary resting place of the sorcerer Merlin. I, on the other hand, am only passing by, with the cold breeze of death lazily lingering at my feet, and which takes its own sweet time to claim its victims. But I, too, am taking my time; to drive spikes all around this place which incessantly steals away, to become familiar with every tree and every flower and to remember the paths that I followed to reach them. The dishevelled bougainvilleas tumbling down the low stone walls; or the unique orchid that blossoms in its hideout when the birds are silent, jealously guarded by a grove of trees, or still, the perfume of the ‘chameli’, sacred flower of India, that all of a sudden permeates the orchard during the silent hours between night and day, the light-headed twilight which lasts only a few seconds. But however much we search for it, circle the spot where the scent seems concentrated, we will never find it alive. It is only in the morning, tired and out of breath that you’ll find it lying in a bed of moss like a dead beast. This piece of land is a haven, but it also has its moments of anxiety, when Dominique no longer illuminates it with her presence, when night falls on its jumble of animal lives. As long as Dominique is here, I have no fear. She is simultaneously serene and strong. In the old house with the green shutters, I do not feel so lonely, I can sense her presence everywhere, even when she is far away, rolling in the golden coloured sand with a man whose name she doesn’t know, or running through the sugarcane fields with her deep and echoing laugh, the invisible fuzz on the leaves snagging her hair and arms. It is not my youth that I relive through her but another youth, new, wealthy and powerful. Regardless of the fact that I am a transitory being within these walls, some things have an eternity, there is this house, rundown, shapeless, and the people around me who seem to be encrusted in my life, like mollusks to their rock. Dominique’s father, my gardener cum fisherman, with a face marked by the wind and the salt, his coarse and possibly cruel hands, his voice deep and so unique was in the garden when I arrived, pruning the shrubs and the bamboo. He barely even glanced towards me when I told him that he and Dominique could stay. They both formed a part of the scenery and the invisible elements which make up the picture. I had to slip through the canvas without disturbing the peace. The first time I attempted to explore my surroundings, I felt that things were being stirred, disturbed. The trees stirred in the wind uneasily. The flowers seemed to pale. The grass did not recognise my footsteps nor the wind my breath. I was the trespasser in whose presence all intimacy is stolen away. I had to learn how to walk again, to breathe, to move without disturbing the intertwined sequence of trees and animals. Make myself invisible to blend into the background. But I could feel a mad energy, forceful and untamed all around me, that commands or condemns, that creates or destroys and that does not appreciate human presence. Maybe in the long run, a sombre change will operate within me. One by one, my fibres will solve their quartering, they will become compact/fall into place to better receive the magnetic particles hanging in the air, and then, I will also become a bit tree, a bit bird. I will even distil the sunlight, distribute it in turn in small doses in the tiny, blond veins of the wild plants while the ‘curdled milk’ plant will receive a silver drop in each of its flecks. Beside me, Dominique has fallen asleep, the bird lying on her chest, her cheek laid upon a cushion of fresh mint leaves. The child-like face hurts me. It carries the lost innocence that brings back memories of the olden days. I remain still, I will be motionless for hours so as not to disturb her siesta. Chapter 2 At night, it is still the sound of the sea that I hear from my small room in the attic, with a pitched roof. I, who once upon a time suffered from claustrophobia, who could not bear low ceilings or cramped spaces, today, I feel the need to bury myself away, to wrap myself up in a feeling of security as artificial as it is austere. When the fear of glimpsing a familiar face in the ceiling of the night surfaces, I take shelter in my garret, I lock myself in, my head close to the wooden beam. The insects make cracks in the partitions, their drone all around me familiar. Surrounded thus, I feel safe, even if I know one day they will gnaw the very foundation of the house. A small sky-light, a bull’s eye opens up on one of the partitions. From my bed, it enables me to see a small patch of sky. But all you need is to have a restrained vision, like that of a prisoner, rails that meet your gaze, a naked, prison-like exterior, to discover the endless moods of this sky seen through a dropper. Thus hidden in my secret corners, I try to escape from the everyday life, from its struggles and it’s stress. But I am never at peace. At night, I can hear the stray dogs – dozens and dozens of them – nobody knows where they come from – moving in packs around the house. They don’t bark but they move as one, the bodies rubbing against each other making a rustling sound of skin and fur, heavy breaths that swell into a low growl, their rough paws rasping upon the gravel, pulling off the thick, dry grass. Maybe something draws them here, the ancient presence that I myself feel in the house and the surroundings. But there is nothing palpable or recognisable. They sense the same thing in me and even though I do not like dogs, I still feel connected to them by the instinct that we have in common. They spend at least an hour in the garden, digging the earth, sniffing the base of walls, rooting out plants; searching, scratching, sniffing for something unknown to them. The Earth, the sky, the clouds and the air are permeated with their animal odour, with their hot and feverish breath, the anxious bustling in the pit of their stomach. The next day, the garden feels weighty and depressive and takes time to recuperate from the passage of the dogs. Even I feel like a heavy, lazy mass, I keep the memory of those dogs in mind. Some things are difficult to bear like all the unknown entities that impregnate the Earth and make it heavy and variform. These combined mysteries that encircle us and that we deny or that we ignore. In this Universe filled with many divinities who are incarnated into all things, and who I must pray to survive, the Gods are powerful and inclement, like the one who haunts the eyes of the gardener cum fisherman and who forces the duty of procreation and the desire of destruction upon him. Like Dominique who is sometimes frightening and masked when she walks towards the barn or towards the sea, when she overcomes the barriers which I, cannot cross. This maimed life shuts me in and drags me with it, and I let myself be carried along with no courage and no challenge. Many things have changed since I stopped hearing the rumbling dark words, echoing within the walls of a temple, where time seemed frozen amongst the bulging-eyed idols, of a man who beseeched the divine forces for universal peace. I erased them. Since after all, it is not possible; this peace and those prayers are nothing but lies, nothing but a pitiful deception. The proof is that it took me only a night to undo the work of so many years. That’s all prayers are worth, the ones taught to us by using trickery and humiliation, of a devotion born out of desperation, in the struck down temple of our childhood. The night escapes to give place to a supple and wandering morning. As usual, sleep evades me. There is a stampede of thoughts in my head. I have to renounce sleep and resume my watch from the skylight. It is here, hanging from the path of the clouds, that for the first time, I saw the man who is courting Dominique. He was wearing khaki coloured clothes, heavy boots and a rifle that he wore like a standard making his way making his way through the brambles, arms stretched upwards. From the distance, he had the appearance of a bully. He is a keeper in the neighbouring property. Already, the rumours about him have started. They say that he has no qualms in turning a blind eye from time to time to the poachers who hunt monkeys, wild boars, hares and pigeons. But he is inflexible when it comes to deers. It is not to protect them but to sacrifice them to the licensed hunters once the hunting season/season of hunt begins... “His name is Suresh, Dominique told me. He is obscure and violent. He has already beaten up one of the hunters who had killed a doe. Next to him, the other men of the village are nothing but pale reflections, shadows...” Wide awake, she would dream, as all women dream, of the authority of men, of the feminine submission that they deny themselves early on. I felt the need to educate Dominique about love, which is, more often than not, a betrayal, of oneself and of the other. But there was something gentle on her face, a desire so light that I could not bring myself to say it. Yet, it seemed as though she had read my mind, as she stretched her fingers towards me, barely grazing the brown fuzzy hair of my forearm, smiling and full of unsaid words; a caress, a hereditary memory woven between us. - What do we know of love? she had whispered. We can experience it at the age of twenty just as we can at the age of forty. - And we will still remain just as ignorant, I replied. She pulled away laughingly, mocking my sorrow. She dashed off in the direction of the litchi orchard that quickly engulfed her until all I could see was the bright yellow glare of her skirt. Later, I met Suresh by the fence of the adjacent property; he was exactly as Dominique had described him: coarse, wild and troubled. “Are you the lunar who Dominique talks about?” I nodded, surprised at the strange title. - It’s not common to see a woman who lives on her own. Aren’t you scared? - No, I like this place. (I forced myself not to think about the dogs) Dominique’s father lives close by... His expression was both condescending and surly. - Still... be careful. - Why? - I have been told that dogs roam around your house at night, they used to come at mine, a few years ago. It was at the very beginning, I was still a stranger here. They would growl, dig up the nooks and corners; you would have thought that they were trying to unearth a cadaver. Around here they claim that it is a curse to see those dogs, that they are creatures of the night in disguise. Of course, I don’t believe in all that nonsense. But the year they came to me, the previous owner of the grounds had an accident, be it a coincidence or not, in the cabin and he died. With the talk circulating about the dogs and the bad luck that they brought, the new owner took fright and gifted me the lodge. He never set foot in it. I became the owner of a small part of the forest. The darkest part... He scrutinises me, waiting for some unknown reaction on my part. But he quickly grew dark again seeing as I did not move nor did I pronounce a single word. After a moment of expectation, he continued: - Coming back to the dogs, be careful... - I told you, I am well protected. Moreover, I am not superstitious. But what really happened here? This place conceals its secrets very well. They talk about bygone murders. Wouldn’t you be the one who killed your former boss? I was only jesting but his eyes turned dark and bright and his anger made him ugly. - What do you know of death and vengeance? These things are not to be taken lightly especially at Souffleur where the screams of the drowned can always be heard...” Having said that, he turned his back upon me and strode away, not even bothered to look at what he was dragging under his boots; plants, flowers, insects. He was well built, with a broad back and build, strong, sinewy legs under his khaki coloured clothes and upon seeing him leave, I felt a twinge of regret that we should depart on such bitter notes. Almost idly, I wondered about the taste that the union of a body so similar to mine would have, we had the same brown toffee colour, the same black oiled hair, the same clay-like appearance. Like becoming one with yourself or with a reflection of yourself. But my forbidden games had only allowed me to know the sweet and sour flavour of Jerome’s skin, from the closed pores to the flushed tinge, and to the filmy blond fuzz. And yet, this barren and almost virginal body of mine could only savor, throughout her life of asceticism and relinquishment, one night. And in a single night, even when it is the only night, the most real and the most startling, you do not have time to know each other, or to learn about each other... Now that I am older, closer to forty years of age, I play with Suresh like I play with Dominique, with a freedom of mind that even surprises me. I am no longer concerned about past angers. I feed on dreams, make myself dizzy with ever-changing plans. Then, I revert back to my old self, to my hearth of loneliness and regrets. Chapter 3 I opened my eyes to a world of faded colours and sunken landscapes, an icy pale world, like the one before the existence of life. I was convinced of being a distant relic, sworn to abnegation. A line, weak and sketched kept me away from oblivion. It would only take one act, barely painful, to cross it. Numbed, giddy with such a certainty, I slit my veins open. At first, a pleasant feeling of repose washed over me. Unknown, unsuspected pressure ebbed away, the knotted muscles unravelled. Judgements ceased to be expressed in words and thoughts in my head. I switched off my mind as one switches of a light. My eyes closed upon a sickly sweet and bright source of light. My nape retired from a lifetime of stiffness. My shoulders pressed into the ground. My spine became one with the roots. Then, after the period of rest, another work started, this time out of my will. My body started to disintegrate, but another life, or rather, a throng of other living things pervaded me. Those who would find a rebirth within me. My head turned into a bubble full of air. Red ants swarmed in my open palms. I still didn’t budge/move. I felt ageless, I was the earth, full of foreign lives, fractions of life and even dead, there was an incessant fluttering within me, which was a sign of my own continuity. I was linear, gradually plunging into a deep and low-pitched rhythm. I no longer needed the medium of a body to merge into ambient objects, on the contrary, the body was only a barrier undergoing the process of decomposition, apart from that, I was everything, I could feel everything. Above me, there was the colour blue. A lot of blue that could be glimpsed from under my closed eyelids and that was not the sky. It was a naked, free blue which had no identity. No shape, no boundary, no depth and no weight. It was simply a colour, the colour blue. Blue had enveloped me, a shroud upon my immobilised, suspended restful body. Blue that strikes me even when I am lying down upon this shore of gold, drawing into my lungs deep breaths of light. That must carry it far away from me, far from this wreckage of solitary/lonely beings, into the greens, into the silence, into the heaviness/gravity of souvenirs. To die into the blue, what better joy, what paramount liberation... But I am not dead. I have fallen asleep. Waking up after so many hours or even days, I was permeated with an earthy smell and a certainty that all the creatures I had perceived had bequeathed their lives to me: my wrists scarred on their own. Only a puddle of blood testified my attempt at suicide. I got up, light-headed, thinking ‘it is not time yet.’ For the first time in ages, I allowed myself to think about Jerome. Not that I found the task difficult, upon arriving here, I had to force myself to wipe out any trace of his presence, to ignore it so that the sudden pain which had been a part of me so long after my departure comes back to betray me. But after my experience, my ‘pretend death’, it seemed easier for me to think about these things. To re-build, step by step, the strange journey which had led me here, to Souffleur, on the fringe of this island with the semblance of a full-stop. This path had definitely not begun with Jérôme but had branched off, when for the first time, young, skinny and assailed with doubts and illnesses, I crossed the threshold of his ‘ashram’, of the haven founded by my blond guru. That first time, he had spoken about an amalgamation of all things. We were a patchwork of confused and uncertain people, gathered there and he had walked amongst us with a smile- that smile – and had told us to forget where we were and who we were, to go beyond this naked room and the peaceful ashram, beyond the garden and the Island, beyond the universe, to cross all the physical hurdles that castrates us to learn how to see. Somebody with closed eyes, worried, had whispered, “But I don’t see anything...” He had stopped walking, and leaned towards the anguished young lad. I vaguely remember that he had placed his hand on the boy’s shoulder. - You are too aware of yourself, he had said. Forget yourself. I can still hear his voice. The soft tone, peaceful, elapsing over my fears, I, who was rising from the ashes of a burnt adolescence, and forcing myself to forget the bruises and wounds. I see him as a light gliding amongst the shadows of the ashram surrounded by towering mango trees of several centuries of age. I see him as a door opening up to the darkest moments of life. And yet, he was not a dream. Reality was all around him. The press had described him as ‘The Jesus of Benares’, ‘The blond Guru’, ‘Krishna’s disciple’, ‘ The avatar of the century’. A caricature depicted him as an ascetic; with tangled long hair falling onto his shoulders, long nails, garbed only in a cloth wrapped around his hips. The heading read “Let’s send him back to the Himalayas!” To me, he was more than a man. I think that I adored him like one adores the Gods even though l believed to have rid myself of all trace of blind faith. He had spent years travelling all around the world, in search of answers. He had circled beliefs, childish ones, which promised to heal the soul and punish by fire. Deceptive ones, which ensured a distant redemption. He wanted to know who he was, and the reason why. He found his answers by the banks of the river Ganga. Or rather, he thought that he had. Thus confident about his discoveries, he started preaching and established ashrams attracting the black sheep of families. Without realising that truths of such a nature cannot be shared. In the end, all his ashrams were abandoned or burned down and the inhabitants persecuted or hunted down. It’s as though he were trailing an ancient curse behind him, which would only cease once she had completely destroyed him. After a while, he had to face the obvious: he couldn’t protect them. He had no power. At the time when I had known him, his face was worn-out, and his eyes would only be lit up by a smile on rare occasions. And yet, he still clung on to a faith which probably only still made any sense to him and a few others, like me, who had been tossed like wreckage on a bank. Maybe we were his life buoys. He, who had searched so far and wide, could believe in nothing other than the tired souls who he was slowly bringing into the light. He had opened the doors of the ashram wide open and was calling all of us to him like a big gust of wind. How to describe him, as I saw him at the time, with the cupidity of youth and how I see him now, with my load of sorrow? No, these two images are too conflicting. He almost became a God. He had come to the Island as if possessed by a last ray of hope. Driven by an impossible desire that will never be quenched, so quickly followed by bitterness. He wanted to fulfil his mission at any cost, to go beyond his manly state – but man, Jerome, man is all that we will ever be, and that is already enough – but he was not from here nor from there, not a priest nor a guru, not white, not black. In a country of deeply rooted inequalities, the reception could not be hearty. It had begun with manifestations against him and the ashram that he wanted to set up. Through the medium of the press, the radio and public meetings, hatred had hit him with full force. He would go from door to door, wearing rubber sandals in the heat of Port-Louis which smelt the tar and was responsible for the strange drowsiness that afflicted people. He was making a quest for the ashram but all that he got back in return was an unwholesome curiosity. Some people had begun following him, some to make fun, others because of sympathy, ready to believe in the messiah. But what a meager procession it was, bearing no resemblance whatsoever with the huge gathering of crowds that he dreamed of. It was the year 1967, the Island had other battles to fight. Little attention was given to such an unknown entity, someone from the other side of the fence, the other half of the world. Those not interested in the fight would hide behind a curtain of indifference, other would engage in verbal fights, the ugly and injurious language of racial hatred. Then one day, Govinda, a young man of eighteen years of age was stoned to death in a brawl. Jerome would later tell me the story of his death, burning up with guilt. He had brought his disciples (too big a word, he murmured with a note of self-derision) to Port-Louis and they were passing by a Mosque at the time of prayer. Maybe by bravado, Govinda began to chant the Hindu incantations. And the men came out of the Mosque... After the death of the lad, Jerome retired to a small village in the South. He had wanted take shelter in the silence. But gradually, people came to him. Quietly, without any disturbance, the corrugated iron house which was his home became bigger; more rooms were added by clumsy hands. The villagers had taken him under their wing, they found him amusing and harmless. One by one, they started to come to the ashram, understanding only part of the message he was trying to convey, they, who were Hindu by birth and by habit and who practiced their faith unquestioningly. Due to this unusual unity created by the situation, they had joined hands in fighting the waves of revolt threatening to take the ashram by storm. Jerome had become someone they bowed down to, their hurricane-lamp bringing an illusion of fame to the unknown little village. Slowly, other disciples had joined their ranks, from the island itself, from the neighbouring islands, from Europe. The small community had structured itself around its Vedic hymn, had fallen into place, had become respectable at least in its own eyes, to the others they were still a group of hippies and druggies. But against all, he remained an indiscernible shift in the minute universe framed by grey coloured walls. It was a world out of step with the real world, gathering dissimilar people living on borrowed time. Those who chanted the verses of the Gita, the Holy Book of Hinduism in a sing-song hymn, with baritone voices; those who would close their eyes and sway in the vapour/fume of the incense, as if under the influence of a briny drug, those who would look at Jerome with immense, misty eyes as though he were the incarnation of the Hindu God, Krishna...

A natural multi-linguist originally from Mauritius but now
based in London. Growing up in such a
culturally diverse country, I developed a natural aptitude for languages and
literature, with a soft spot for Shakespeare’s motherland. Graduated with a
Masters Degree in Literary translation from the University of Swansea, I have
been translating in 4 different language combinations for 8 years now with a
focus on Literature/Journalism/Government & Politics/Law as well as
embracing more general topics like Marketing and Social Sciences. Alongside my linguistic passion, I have been
working in Government, for the Department for International Trade for 2 years now
working with Parliament and representing the department around the world. An avid art lover, I dabble in painting and
mosaic making. My proudest literary achievement would have to be the translation
of Mauritian author Ananda Devi’s ‘L’Arbre Fouet’ from French to English.
