Alene Alder-Rangel was
raised on a farm in Logan, Utah, USA. Her mother worked for Utah State
University (USU), and her father was a cattle farmer. As a youth, Alene enjoyed
riding horses and writing stories. She began working at a living history museum
as a teenager, which made her decide to major in history. The massive amount of
reading and writing required during her university studies sharpened her
English skills. Her first experience abroad was as an exchange student at the
University of Malta. In 1995, Alene graduated with honors with a double major in
history and philosophy from USU. Then she obtained her master’s degree in museum
studies from the State University of New York at Oneonta, which has one of the
top programs in the field. Afterward, Alene worked as an archivist and curator
for the Jerome Historical Society in Arizona for several years.

Then Alene met and
married Drauzio E.N. Rangel, who was studying for his Ph.D. in microbiology at USU.
After he finished his degree, he was required to return to his native Brazil. Thus,
in 2007, Alene started a new chapter of her life in Brazil. Her first job in
Brazil was teaching English. Then in 2008, the Universidade de Vale do Paraiba
(UNIVAP) hired Alene to edit their researchers’ articles. Most researchers there
could write in English, but not good enough to publish in international
journals. She significantly helped increase their publication rate and impact
factor. Through editing articles in a variety of disciplines, Alene fell in
love with science and editing. She also taught private English lessons to Professors
and students at UNIVAP.

 In 2015, UNIVAP decided to downsize its research
programs and laid off many of its top researchers, including Alene’s husband.
When he found work at the Universidade Federal de Goiás, Alene ended her
contract with UNIVAP and set up her own business editing and translating
articles for researchers throughout Brazil. She has edited or translated at
least 1450 articles, and over 900 have been successfully published. Her
portfolio includes about 400 clients and more than 60 universities and other
research institutions in various disciplines.

Alene combined her love of history and science by
writing a biography of Dr. Donald Roberts. He was an internationally known
researcher in Insect Pathology. The book is available on Amazon.com. Alene is
also the author of seven articles published in high-impact international
journals.

Her other scientific endeavor is as the co-chair of the
International Symposium on Fungal Stress (ISFUS). She is helping organize the fifth  ISFUS that will take place in Foz de Iguaçu
in September 2024.

Alene recently moved to Dois Vizinhos, Paraná, where
her husband is a professor at the  Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná.
