Professional haircolor is both a science and an art. However, you must learn the scientific rules
and color guidelines before you can achieve your desired artistic results. Being creative before
understanding the rules of color could yield disastrous results.
Level System
The level system is a measurement system that colorists use to determine the lightness or
darkness of artificial and natural hair color (Figure 16-2). Hair levels are arranged on a scale of
1 to 10, with 1 being the darkest and 10 being the lightest. Although the name for each level
may vary among manufacturers, it’s important to accurately identify the hair’s degree of
lightness or darkness. Some brands may have an extended level system that goes beyond a
level 10. Develop your eye to determine where an existing hair color resides within a single
level. Level 5.5, for example, is a half level lighter than level 5.
Focus On
Lighting is critical when analyzing hair color. For best results, use natural light during your
analysis whenever possible. However, if you are familiar with the light cast by artificial light, you
can still effectively check your haircolor results. Artificial light, which comes in several varieties,
can manipulate the way you see color. Incandescent light casts a warm, amber light that
enhances red and orange tones. Fluorescent light casts a flat, cool color that enhances blues
and greens. Halogen lights are white lights that imitate natural light and make all colors look
more vivid. Light emitting diodes (LEDs) come in warm or cool tones. They also come in “smart”
designs that allow you to remotely control the light’s warmth or coolness. Proper lighting and
wall color is essential to your haircolor results. Brightly colored walls in a small space can create
color cast on the hair that can be further illuminated by the lighting choice.

Sistema de niveles
La tabla de niveles de coloración es un sistema que los coloristas aplican para determinar cuan
claro u oscuro es el tono de un cabello natural o artificial (Figura 16-2). El nivel del cabello se
mide en una escala del 1 al 10 donde el 1 es el tono más oscuro y 10 el más claro.
Aunque algunas marcas pueden guiarse por sistemas que superan el número 10 y la
descripción del nivel puede variar según el fabricante, es importante determinar el grado de
claridad u oscuridad correctamente y tener un ojo entrenado para medir el tono exacto es clave.
Por ejemplo, un nivel 5,5 es menos claro que 6 pero no tan oscuro como un nivel 5.
Atención a los detalles
La iluminación es crucial para analizar un tono de cabello, para mejores resultados se
recomienda, en la medida de lo posible, usar siempre la luz natural, sin embargo, si está
habituado a la luz emitida por luz artificial puede, igualmente, notar el resultado final del teñido.
Hay muchos tipos de luces artificiales y esto puede alterar la apreciación de los colores: la luz
incandescente emite una cálida luz ámbar que altera los tonos rojos y naranja, la fluorescente
emite una luz plana que colores fríos como el azul y verde varían, las led que hay de tonos
cálidos y fríos y las lámparas halógenas que son luces blancas que emiten una luz natural y
permite que todos los colores se vean más vívidos. También existen diseños inteligentes que
permiten de forma remota controlar cuan cálida o fría sea la luz. Una buena fuente de luz y el
correcto color de pared son determinantes en el resultado del teñido. Un espacio pequeño con
paredes de colores brillantes puede afectar el tono emitido por el cabello haciendo que se vea
más iluminado por la elección de luces.
