La trappe s’ouvre, et je m’enfonce dans la profondeur des ténèbres, armé seulement d’un énorme gourdin.
J’aperçois aussitôt le feu follet à l’endroit qui m’avait été indiqué. J’engage le combat sur-le-champ. Je trouve la soupe chaude ou mieux encore chaussure a mon pied, car j’avais affaire à un terrible ennemi. J’avais beau le rosser de coup, il revenait sans cesse à la charge. Les cris de mort que je poussais ne l’effrayaient pas ; ils semblaient, au contraire, redoubler son énergie et son activité. Il y avait un bon quart d’heure que la lutte était engagée, et la victoire paraissait encore douteuse. J’étais fatigué, je suais à grosses gouttes ; sans mentir, j’avais les cheveux mouillés comme une lavette. Le feu follet se moquait de mon impuissance ; il folâtrait autour de moi en faisant entendre des exclamations de joie et des rires sardoniques. J’étais fou de colère. Prenant mon bâton à deux mains, je fonce de nouveau sur mon ennemi, et je le terrasse enfin. Le combat était terminé, et je restais vainqueur. Le feu follet s’était dissipé en une fumée bleuâtre.

The trap door opened, and I plunged into the darkness armed only with a big club.
I saw the feu follet right away in the exact spot I had been told to look. I jumped into combat. I sure found myself in a pickle, or rather in a jam, for I was dealing with a formidable opponent. I kept striking it, but it kept coming back at me. I screamed bloody murder, but nothing seemed to frighten it. On the contrary, the more I yelled, the stronger it came back at me. I had been battling it for a quarter of an hour, and victory seemed doubtful. I was tired and sweating like a pig; no lie, my hair looked as if I had been walking in the rain without a hat. The feu follet mocked my weakness; it flittered around me making noises that sounded like squeals of joy and sardonic laughter. I was enraged. I grabbed my bat in both hands, rushed towards my enemy, and finally struck it down. The combat was over, and I had won. The feu follet evaporated in waft of blue smoke.

Source text - French J’étais super timide, j’ai mis trois jours à décrocher le téléphone ! Je débutais comme vendeur en informatique, j’avais 19 ans. Je prenais le combiné, je faisais le numéro… et je raccrochais ! La première personne avec qui je parviens finalement à parler est une nana super sympa… qui m’achète un truc ! Après ça, j’ai enchaîné les coups de fil et rattrapé mon retard.
Plus tard, j’ai géré des équipes et un chiffre d’affaires très important. Pour un produit en première page de tous les catalogues qui reste bloqué à Taïwan, tu fais quoi ? Tu pètes un câble ? En fait, tu prends ça comme une compétition sportive : tu respires, tu gardes la tête froide, pour être le plus concentré possible.
Translation - English I was really shy. It took me three days to even pick up the phone! I was just starting out in computer tech sales, and I was 19 years old. I’d look at the number, dial it…and then I’d hang up! The first person I was actually brave enough to speak to was this really nice lady, and she actually bought something! After that, I just made calls, one after the other, and was able to catch back up.
Later, I was a team manager and handled a large volume of sales. What do you do when you have a product on the cover of every catalog and it’s stuck in Taiwan? Do you blow a fuse? No, you look at it like an athlete in a sports competition: you breathe, you keep your cool, and try to stay as focused as possible.
