En 2013, Barack Obama avait renoncé à frapper la Syrie de Bachar al-Assad accusée d'avoir perpétré une attaque à l'arme chimique dans une banlieue de Damas aux mains des rebelles (1500 tués dont quelque 400 enfants). Moscou l'avait convaincu en forçant le régime syrien à liquider sous contrôle international son armement chimique. En 2017, Donald Trump, souvent critiqué pour sa proximité supposée avec Vladimir Poutine, n'a attendu que 48 heures pour punir Bachar al-Assad après le bombardement à l'arme chimique de la localité de Khan Cheikhoun qui a fait entre 60 et 100 morts et a donné lieu à la diffusion d'images insoutenables d'enfants à l'agonie. Le nouveau président des Etats-Unis a de la sorte changé radicalement de position à l'égard du Président syrien que son administration avait remis en selle il y a quelques jours en ne réclamant plus officiellement son départ comme préalable à une sortie de crise.
Si la responsabilité de l'armée syrienne dans l'attaque chimique de mardi est avérée, ce dont les Etats-Unis n'ont pas encore administré la preuve, des représailles peuvent s'avérer justifiées. Car non seulement Damas aurait fait montre d'un cynisme criminel à l'égard de sa population, comme il l'a déjà fait par le passé, mais il aurait aussi révélé sa duplicité, son armement chimique étant censé être éradiqué depuis l'accord de 2013. Néanmoins, l'attitude du commandant en chef des armées américaines a de quoi susciter certaines inquiétudes. Si l'attaque de cette nuit devient l'action de référence de sa politique étrangère, cela signifie que le président de la plus grande puissance mondiale considérera dorénavant le passage par l'ONU comme accessoire et qu'il ne s'embarrassera pas de préoccupation multilatéraliste. Cela implique aussi qu'il n'hésitera pas à provoquer l'affrontement direct avec les autres grandes puissances, en l'occurrence ici la Russie. On assiste donc à un possible retour de la loi du plus fort. Qu'elle nous paraisse légitime dans le cas de l'attaque chimique syrienne ne la rend pas moins extrêmement dangereuse pour le nouvel ordre du monde qui se profile. Quelle crédibilité les Etats-Unis auront-ils pour empêcher la Russie ou la Chine de procéder de la même façon ?
George W. Bush avait initié la guerre préventive qui a apporté le chaos au Moyen-Orient. That it appears legitimate to us in the case of the Syrian chemical attack doesn’t make it less dangerous for the new world order which is beginning to appear. What credibility will the United States have to prevent Russia or China behaving in the same way?
George W. Bush embarked upon preventative warfare, which brought chaos to the Middle East. We can only hope that Donald Trump has a well thought out and long term strategy, particularly with Russia, concerning this troubled region and that this practice of impulsive warfare – imagine the same strategy being used against Iran – doesn’t result in chaos of an even greater magnitude.

N’y a-t-il pas quelque chose d’effrayant dans le fait d’entendre le leader et chef des armées de la première puissance mondiale "avouer" avoir modifié du tout au tout son opinion sur base d’une simple émotion ?
Le 4 avril dernier, peu après l’attaque au gaz sarin menée contre la ville syrienne de Khan Sheikhoun, le président Donald Trump a, très justement, dénoncé une "attaque chimique atroce". Et précisé que celle-ci avait tué, parmi quelque 87 personnes, "même de beaux petits bébés".
Le lendemain, à la tribune du Conseil de sécurité, la représentante des Etats-Unis aux Nations unies, Mme Nikki Haley, brandissait elle aussi des photos d’enfants syriens victimes de l’attaque pour annoncer que son pays était prêt à "faire plus". Le jour suivant, des navires américains mouillant en Méditerranée tiraient - sans en avoir avisé les Nations unies - 59 missiles Tomahawk (à 780 000 euros la pièce) contre la base aérienne syrienne d’Al-Shayrat d’où aurait été lancée l’attaque contre Khan Sheikhoun, tuant 6 soldats syriens et détruisant une vingtaine d’avions, mais laissant apparemment la piste intacte. La majorité des chancelleries et des médias occidentaux ont approuvé.
Une larme au coin de l’œil
Il ne s’agit pas de se prononcer sur la réalité de l’émotion ressentie par Donald Trump au vu des images des petites victimes syriennes. Il ne semble d’ailleurs pas, comme son prédécesseur en avait le secret, s’être à l’occasion furtivement écrasé une larme au coin de l’œil. Les discours incendiaires et martiaux du candidat, puis du président Trump, pourraient par ailleurs nous faire douter de cette sincérité. Mais la question n’est pas là.
Le problème, me semble-t-il, se trouve tout d’abord dans le chef de médias qui rapportent, sans prise de distance aucune, de tels "moments d’émotion" comme une information à part entière. Il est vrai que l’émotion est, depuis quelque temps, au cœur de nos JT qui, de plus en plus, tendent à se confondre avec une émission de divertissement.
Mais le problème se trouve toutefois bien davantage chez nos hommes (et femmes) politiques qui, désormais, s’appliquent à jouer jusqu’à l’écœurement des émotions de leur public. Les "beaux petits bébés" de Trump me font en effet penser à l’affaire des couveuses koweïtiennes vidées (avait-on dit à l’époque de l’invasion de l’émirat en 1990) de leurs nourrissons abandonnés sur le carrelage, et emportées en Irak par les soudards de Saddam Hussein. Un "scandale" qui avait comme il se doit suscité un tollé aux Etats-Unis. Et permis à George Bush père d’emporter l’aval du Congrès pour son intervention en Irak : au moins 500 000 morts. Et combien de "beaux petits bébés" ? Scandale monté de toutes pièces, apprendrait-on par la suite, par la firme Hill&Knowlton et par le gouvernement américain, avec l’aide de l’ambassadeur du Koweït, dont la fille avait été présentée au dit Congrès comme une infirmière en larmes ayant été témoin de la scène… Depuis, George Bush junior a permis de nous faire voir en son "daddy" un homme honorable.
Khan Sheikhoun et ses suites suscitent d’ailleurs aussi des questions sur le système "démocratique" étasunien lui-même. Système qui, outre le fait qu’il ne permet qu’à des millionnaires d’accéder au pouvoir, nous a récemment montré (avec Bush junior et Donald Trump) que ces millionnaires pouvaient aussi être tout à fait incompétents. Car ce que les changements de cap incessants de Donald Trump et ses propos après l’attaque au sarin donnent à voir une fois de plus, c’est bien un président qui, obsédé par son ego et son ressentiment contre Barack Obama, ne connaît pas ses dossiers.
Un subit changement d’avis
A l’écouter en effet, Xi Jinping lui aurait "beaucoup appris" sur la situation coréenne lors de leur rencontre, le 6 avril. Ce qui n’a pas empêché M. Trump d’avoir des propos très définitifs (et dangereux) sur la question. Ni de renvoyer un porte-avions au large des côtes coréennes deux jours plus tard…
Le président des Etats-Unis est revenu plusieurs fois sur l’émotion qu’il aurait ressentie au vu des images de Khan Sheikhoun, confiant à la presse que leur vue avait "changé son regard" sur Bachar al-Assad. Cela après six ans de conflit et plus de 310 000 morts… Mais, même si Trump dit vrai, n’y a-t-il pas quelque chose d’effrayant dans le fait d’entendre le leader et chef des armées de la première puissance mondiale "avouer" avoir modifié du tout au tout son opinion sur base d’une simple émotion ?
Tout récemment, l’Unicef estimait que la violence contre les enfants en Syrie avait connu son "pire niveau" en 2016 avec au moins 652 enfants tués (+ 20 % par rapport à 2015) dont plus du tiers à proximité d’écoles. Par ailleurs, 2,3 millions d’enfants syriens seraient privés d’enseignement dans le monde, dont 1,7 en Syrie, et un tiers d’entre eux n’ont connu autre chose que la guerre. Il y a 280 854 enfants dans des zones assiégées par les différents protagonistes et plus de 6 millions nécessitent de l’aide humanitaire.
Ce ne sont certes pas les Syriens qui croiront à l’émotion sincère de M. Trump. Eux qui, depuis 6 ans, voient leurs enfants se faire tuer ou rester estropiés à vie. En vérité, des "beaux petits bébés" syriens, tant Donald Trump que Vladimir Poutine, tant Bachar al-Assad que nombre de chefs rebelles, tant Recep Tayyip Erdogan que les pétro-monarques et bien d’autres "grands" de ce monde s’en tapent !

A Tear in the Corner of the Eye
It’s not a matter of passing judgement on the sincerity of Donald Trump’s feelings after seeing the images of Syria’s infant victims. Moreover, it seems that he does not have the ability, as his predecessor did on occasion, of furtively suppressing a tear in the corner of his eye. The inflammatory and militaristic speeches of candidate, and then President Trump could make us doubt his honesty, but that’s not the point.
The problem, it seems to me, is found first of all in the heads of media organizations which report, without distancing themselves from the story, such “moments of emotion” as news items in their own right. It is a fact that for some time now, emotion has been at the heart of our TV news bulletins, which resemble entertainment programs more and more.
However, this problem lies much more with our politicians who, nowadays, play up to the emotions felt by the public. Trump’s “beautiful little babies” make me think of the affair of the Kuwaiti incubators which were emptied (It was said at the time of the invasion of the emirate in 1990) of their infants, who were abandoned on the floor and taken to Iraq by Saddam Hussein’s lackeys. This “scandal” sparked, as it should, an outcry in the United States, and it allowed George Bush Sr. to get the backing of Congress for his intervention in Iraq, which left at least 500,000 dead. How many of these were “beautiful little babies”? We learned afterwards that this scandal was a complete fabrication, perpetrated by the company Hill and Knowlton and the American government with the help of the Kuwaiti ambassador to the US, whose daughter was presented to said Congress as a tearful nurse who had witnessed the scene… Since then, George Bush Junior has allowed us to see his “daddy” as an honorable man.
Khan Shaykhun and its consequences also raise questions about the US “democratic” system itself. However, this did not prevent him from making some very definitive (and dangerous) remarks on the matter, nor did it prevent him from deploying an aircraft-carrier off the Korean coast two days later…
The President of the United States came back to the emotion that he felt on seeing the images of Khan Shaykhun several times; confiding to the press that after seeing them “My attitude toward Syria and Assad has changed very much.” This after 6 years of conflict and more than 310,000 dead… However, even if Trump is being honest, is there not something frightening in hearing the leader of the armed forces of the greatest power in the world “Confess” that he completely changed his mind on the basis of a simple feeling?

Source text - French Emilien et la maladie des brides amniotiques
La maladie des brides amniotiques est un ensemble complexe de malformations congénitales qui touchent dans la majorité des cas les membres supérieurs et inférieurs mais aussi l'axe "thorax abdomen" ou la tête. Emilien fait partie des 70 enfants touchés tous les ans en France.
C'est l'échographie morphologique du 5ème mois qui a révélé les malformations d'Emilien et c'est aussi le jour où notre vie a basculée...
En définitive, la maladie des brides amniotiques est bénigne comparée à d'autres (sans vouloir hiérarchiser bien sûr...), mais elle nous a permis de relativiser sur plein de choses : l’envie d’un bébé parfait, les pathologies graves, le sens et la valeur de la vie surtout...
Les quelques 70 enfants qui, comme lui, sont touchés tous les ans en France par la maladie des brides amniotiques n'intéressaient pas grand monde à part leurs proches... C'est la conclusion à laquelle nous sommes rapidement arrivés en cherchant des informations sur Internet avant la naissance d'Emilien. Alors OK, 2002, c'était un peu la préhistoire du web, mais, mais force est de constater que ça n'a pas beaucoup changé en 2017. Les réseaux sociaux ont peut-être un peu amélioré les choses en termes de contacts entre les patients et/ou parents, mais ce n'est pas encore l'idéal.

Emilien a subit 8 opérations au total. La dernière en 2016, c'est lui qui l'a décidée. L'essentiel de ces opérations avaient pour objectif l'amélioration des fonctions motrices (Emilien est né sans pouce à la main gauche) et aussi pour améliorer ses appuis (son pied gauche lui fait souvent mal et depuis qu'il est né, il a du assister à au moins 40 séances de kiné par an).
L'aspect psychologique a été assez compliqué à gérer aussi : Emilien a longtemps ressenti une colère aiguë à tel point que certains examens médicaux pourtant bénins (une simple radio par exemple...) se sont transformés en calvaire. La gestion de l'autre aussi : le passage au collège a été un cap un peu difficile à passer, mais il a fini par intégrer le fait qu'il devait "éduquer" les autres à son état, faire de la pédagogie, expliquer et aussi savoir dire stop quand il en avait assez.
Aujourd'hui, Emilien a 15 ans, il va rentrer en seconde avec un parcours scolaire tout à fait normal, il joue de la batterie, il joue aux jeux vidéos comme beaucoup d'autres ados de son âge. Il est "presque" normal.
Il est très probable qu'il prenne notre relais pour continuer à faire connaître cette maladie rare : il le dira avec ses mots à lui.
Nous avons tenté de faire de lui un garçon équilibré, conscient de ses différences et malgré tout, conscient aussi de ses forces....
Translation - English Amniotic Band Syndrome describes a complex group of congenital conditions, which in the majority of cases affect the upper and lower limbs, but also the “thorax abdomen” axis or the head. Emilien is one of 70 children born with this condition every year in France.
The condition was revealed in Emilien during the fifth month morphology ultrasound scan. That was also the day that our lives were turned upside down…
In the end, we learned that Amniotic Band Syndrome is benign compared to some other conditions (Without wanting to seem like it’s a competition of course…), but it allowed us to put a lot of things into perspective: the desire for a perfect baby, serious illnesses, and the meaning and value of life above all.
The roughly 70 children who, like Emilien, are affected by Amniotic Band Syndrome every year in France weren’t of interest to a lot of people, apart from their loved ones… That’s the conclusion which we rapidly came to when searching for information on the internet before he was born. OK, so 2002 was almost prehistoric for the web, but it has to be said that things haven’t changed much in 2017. Social media has perhaps improved things a little in terms of making contacts between patients and/or parents, but it’s still not ideal.

Emilien has undergone 8 operations in total and he decided that the most recent, in 2016, would be the last. Most of the procedures were designed to improve his motor functions (Emilien was born without a thumb on his left hand) and also his legs (His left foot is often painful, and since he was born, he has had to attend at least 40 physiotherapy sessions per year).
The psychological aspect was quite complicated to deal with as well: for a long time, Emilien has felt an intense anger, to the point where some medical examinations, however benign (A simple X-ray for example…) became an ordeal. It was hard to cope with how different he felt as well: starting high school was a difficult time to get through, but in the end he managed to reconcile the fact that he had to “educate” others about his condition, do his school work, explain and also know to say stop when he had had enough.
Today, Emilien is 15, he is going to return to school (at “seconde” level, the equivalent of tenth grade in the US) with a completely normal timetable, he plays the drums, and he plays video games like a lot of other teenagers his age. He is “almost” normal.
It’s very likely that he will take over from us in continuing to increase awareness of this rare condition: he will tell people in his own words.
We have tried to raise Emilien to be a well-balanced boy; aware of his differences, and despite everything, also aware of his strengths.
