English to Malay: Discourse Analysis General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Linguistics
Source text - English Discourse is defined generally by the Merriam Webster Online Dictionary as the use of words to exchange thoughts and ideas. According to Nicki Lisa Cole, a Sociology Expert, “discourse refers to the way we think and communicate on certain circumstances like people, things, the social organization of society, and the relationships among and between all three”. It thus shapes what we are able to think. While for a Grammar and Composition Expert, Richard Nordquist, he agrees with the definition of discourse that it deals with “the use of language in a running discourse, continued over a number of sentences, and involving the interaction of speaker (or writer) and auditor (or reader) in a specific situational context, and within a framework of social and cultural conventions" (Abrams and Harpham, A Glossary of Literary Terms, 2005). Hence, it means that discourse can be divided into several types which are spoken, written, sign language use or any significant semiotic events.
(Abrams and Harpham, A Glossary of Literary Terms, 2005). Oleh itu, ini bermaksud wacana boleh dibahagikan kepada beberapa jenis iaitu lisan, bertulis, penggunaan bahasa isyarat atau sebarang peristiwa semiotik yang penting.
