Quella sera Kyōichi aveva indossato i suoi sandali e si era messo a camminare a grandi passi lungo lo spazio piano a fianco dei binari della ferrovia.
Si sarebbe di certo meritato una multa. Inoltre, se fosse giunto un treno con qualcosa sporgente da un finestrino, come ad esempio un lungo bastone, si sarebbe ritrovato stecchito d’un colpo.
Tuttavia, quella sera non si vedeva neanche l'ombra di un cantoniere, né tanto meno treni con bastoni fuori dai finestrini. Vide invece altre cose, invero assai bizzarre.
La luna del nono giorno era alta nel cielo, coperto da un velo di nuvole simili a scaglie di pesce che sembravano barcollare come completamente fradice della luce lunare. Nei vuoti tra queste nuvole si affacciava di tanto in tanto un freddo scintillio di stelle.
Camminando spedito, Kyōichi era già giunto dove il chiarore della stazione era ben distinguibile, ora come una luce rossa isolata, ora come un riverbero violaceo simile a una fiammata di zolfo; a guardarla strizzando gli occhi sembrava proprio un grande castello.
