English to Spanish: The Stewardess Swims Over the Sea, by Mark A. Jarman General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English We are jammed together in the sky like caged rodents and I have seen it all, know everything about you, your doe-eyed 4H calf from another lifetime, the Mars bar you stole from Nancy Green’s ski jacket, the kitchen party that introduced your face to the beauty of the linoleum. And I know that you are flying from Edmonton to Fredericton with your mother’s ashes in the overhead compartment, the funeral home’s purple drawstring bag that is surprisingly heavy, heavy as guilt. Yet your enjoyment of carrying your old mother around.

Source text - English CORA: No, dis round’s on me. I run into luck. Dat’s why I dragged Chuck outa bed to celebrate. It was a sailor. I rolled him. (She giggles.) Listen, it was a scream. I’ve run into some nutty souses, but dis guy was de nuttiest. De booze dey dish out around de Brooklyn Navy Yard must be as turrible bug-juice as Harry’s. My dogs was givin’ out when I seen dis guy holdin’ up a lamppost, so I hurried to get him before a cop did. I says, “Hello, handsome, wanta have a good time?” Jees, he was paralysed! One of dem polite jags. He tries to bow to me, imagine, and I had to prop him up or he’d fell on his nose. And what d’yuh tink he said? “Lady,” he says, “can yuh kindly tell me de nearest way to de Museum of Natural History?” (They all laugh.) Can yuh imagine! At 2 am. As if I’d know where de dump was anyway. But I says, “Sure ting, Honey Boy, I’ll be only too glad.” So I steered him into a side street where it was dark and propped him against a wall and give him a frisk. (She giggles.) And what d’yuh tink he does? Jees, I ain’t lyin’, he begins to laugh, de big sap! He says, “Quit ticklin’ me.” While I was friskin’ him for his roll! I near died! Den I toined him ’round and give him a push to start him. “Just keep goin’,” I told him. “It’s a big white building on your right. You can’t miss it.” He must be swimmin’ in de North River yet! […] I picked twelve bucks offa him. Come on, Rocky. Set ’em up.
¡Casi me muero!
English to Spanish: Fable: The Camel and the Pig General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English A CAMEL said, "Nothing like being tall and fit, how tall I am!"
A pig, who heard these words, said, "Nothing like being short and fit; look, how short I am!"
The camel said, "Well, if I fail to prove the truth of what I said, I shall give up my hump."
The pig said, "If I fail to prove the truth of what I have said, I shall give up my snout."
"Agreed!" said the camel.
"Just so!" said the pig.
They came to a garden. It was enclosed by a low wall without any opening. The camel stood on this side the wall, and reaching the plants within by means of his long neck, made a breakfast on them. Then he turned jeeringly to the pig, who had been standing at the bottom of the wall, without even having a look at the good things in the garden, and said, "Now, would you be tall, or short?"
Next they came to another garden. It was enclosed by a high wall, with a wicket gate at one end. The pig entered by the gate, and, after having eaten his fill of the vegetables within, came out, laughing at the camel who had had to stay outside because he was too tall to enter the garden by the gate, and said, "Now, would you be tall, or short?"
Then they thought the matter over, and came to the conclusion that the camel should keep his hump and the pig his snout, observing, "Tall is good where tall would do; of short, again, it's also true."

—¡Me parece justo!
“Ser alto va bien donde sea que haga falta;

I'm an English and German to Spanish translator, post-editor, proofreader, and subtitler.
I was born into a Mexican/German bilingual family, with Spanish as my stronger language. I studied Modern English Literature and Translation at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City. I've taken courses on pharmaceutical, literary, feminist, tourism, and web translation, as well as on translation management, HTML, basic programming on python and bash, visual communication, and marketing.
During the full year I worked at a translation agency, I translated over 2 million words of medical and pharmaceutical documents (clinical trial documentation, CoAs, IFUs, protocols, articles, monographs, drug leaflets, among many others), insurance-related texts, contracts, personal documents, and employee guides, with constant professional feedback from my peers.
I completed my master's degree in Translation Science and Technology at the Saarland University in Germany, where I continued developing my skills while still working part-time as a freelance translator. At this stage I learned to use Trados with proficiency, as well as regex, html code, subtitling for people with hearing problems, programming for basic NLP tasks in Python, and translation of various types of specialized texts. I also learned how to be a better researcher and how to find reputable sources, as well as how to write clearly, be organized, and, most of all, how to learn in a more efficient way.
As a freelance translator, I've translated mostly healthcare-related texts (mostly in the field of dental healthcare), as well as training courses for a leading high-fashion company. These and all other projects allowed me to train my attention to detail, my organizational skills, time management, and communication with my clients.
The first two editorials to publish my work in the field of literary translation were Continta me tienes (Spain) and Texere (Mexico).
I am all for translation tests: they give us the ability to discover if a translator's particular skills are really a fit a specific project. I also appreciate feedback—anything is welcome!
