Source text - English During the long years that I lectured at Ben-Gurion University on
matters pertaining to Christianity, providing both a general
introduction to its history as well as offering instruction on specific
subjects of art history and archaeology, I noticed a lack of literature
on these themes, especially in Israel, in the Hebrew language. This
book was first published in Hebrew intending to fill that gap.
The purpose of the present English edition is more general. I
simply want to offer any reader the opportunity to learn an
important chapter of general culture that is usually ignored: the
origin and development of the Christian religion, from its Jewish
background in the land of Israel up to its contribution to the
thought and art of Medieval Europe.
The subjects that make up the core of the book do not
correspond to a systematic account of the historical development
of the Christian movement in the first centuries. Rather, each
chapter deals with a different aspect of the history, life and thought
of the Early Church. Starting from the Jewish roots from which the
Christian religion grew, the book proceeds with the evidence of the
earliest written sources attesting to the manifestation in history of
the Christian phenomenon, and continues with the development
and explanation of the different expressions of thought and works
of the ancient Church, such as its apocalyptic and messianic
doctrines, liturgy and sacraments, monasticism, art and
architecture.
Translation - Russian На протяжении многих лет я читаю лекции в Университете Бен-Гуриона по темам, посвящен-ным христианству: я преподавал общий экскурс в его историю, а также занимался обучением более конкретным дисциплинам, касающимся истории искусства и археологии. Я обратил вни-мание на отсутствие литературы по данной тематике, особенно в земле Израильской, на еврей-ском языке. Первая публикация этой книги была именно на иврите, с намерением восполнить пробел.
Цель английской версии более общая. Я просто хочу предложить каждому читателю возмож-ность открыть важную страницу культуры, которая обычно игнорируется: возникновение и раз-витие христианской религии от ее еврейских корней в земле Израильской, вплоть до вклада в мировоззрение и искусство средневековой Европы.
Темы, которые составляют основу книги, не соответствуют систематическому описанию исто-рического развития христианского движения в первые века. Скорее, каждая глава посвящена различным аспектам истории, жизни и миропонимания ранней церкви. Начиная с еврейских корней, из которых выросла христианская религия, книга демонстрирует свидетельства из са-мых ранних письменных источников, объявляющих о появлении в истории феномена христианства, и далее показывает и разъясняет различные направления мысли в трудах древней церкви, таких, как ее апокалипсическая и мессианская доктрины, литургия и таинства, монашество, искусство и архитектура.

It was the late C. S. Lewis who gave us a helpful
illustration about the vital connection between time
and eternity. He suggested that time could be
likened to a line that is drawn on a piece of paper. This
line has both a start and a finish. Eternity can be likened
to the piece of paper on which the line is drawn. Both the
beginning and the end of the line are visible at one
glance. It is for this reason that, when we read hundreds
of prophecies about future events in the Bible, they are
precisely accurate because they were inspired by the One
who knows the end from the beginning.
In the Bible we read of the, “Lord God Almighty, which
was, and is, and is to come” Revelation 4:8. God has no
yesterday, no today, and no tomorrow. Forever He will
be what He always was. In other words, He is the God of
eternity. When we try to comprehend this, many of us
would exclaim with King David, “Such knowledge is too
wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it” Psalm
139:6. Do you feel that way? I do!

Однажды Клайв Стейплз Льюис подарил нам полезную иллюстрацию о важной связи между временем и вечностью. Он предположил, что время можно представить в виде линии, начерченной на листе бумаги. Эта линия имеет начало и конец. Вечность же можно представить, как этот самый лист, на котором начерчена линия. С первого взгляда мы сразу можем увидеть начало линии и ее конец. Точно так же, мы читаем сотни пророчеств о будущих событиях в Библии, и они точны в своем исполнении, ибо вдохновлены Тем, кто с самого начала знает, чем все закончится.
В Библии мы читаем о том, кто есть “Господь Бог Вседержитель, Который был, есть и грядет” Откровение 4:8. У Бога нет вчера, сегодня, и завтра. Он всегда был, есть и будет. Другими словами, Он - Бог вечности. Пытаясь это понять, многие восклицают подобно Царю Давиду, “Дивно для меня ведение Твое” Псалом 138:6. Вы согласны с этим? Я - да!
